So... when you refer to the "White River Falls TH"
Confusing because it's from the other side of the mountains, just north of Lake Wenatchee. Here's the PCT washout map from the trailhead with my route marked in green. By the way, the through-hikers I met told me they ignored the detour and followed the PCT around the W side of Glacier peak. ...
So... when you refer to the "White River Falls TH" were you able to go up rd #23 or did you start right from the Mountain Loop Hwy? Sorrry; just a bit confused!
P.S. that's an awesome effort. Congrats!

that evokes my feelings for the love of winter - thanks Drew :)
Impressive. I love seeing close photos of glacier peak since they are relatively rare here. I've been close to glacier back in the day. Now it seems and sounds like it may be out of reach for a 9-5 weekend warrior like me. So thanks for sharing your adventure and photos.
Dry sneaker trail walking to about 6500'. Once you cross north of the White Mtn. ridge, east of the PCT at White Pass, you can put on your skis. I slept on dry pumice at Glacier gap and half the ascent was on pumice, half on snow. I had no crevasse difficulties at all. Definitely bring your skis! Take an extra day though. After such a long approach, it makes sense to get in some runs. From Glacier Gap you can ski north facing slopes (just to the sou...
Great TR Tex! am thinking of heading up there this weekend and have been debating carrying skis - what elevation did you hit snow? any crevasses or other hazards encountered? Thanks!
Those goats don't seem to care about the symmetry of their tracks at all.
Baker from N. Twin, yesterday. So much snow left in the high country!
Ebeam,
Nice to meet your group up top. I was part of the 2-some skinning off Grant peak as you guys came up.
Suprising how great the Roman wall skied that late in the day. The Coleman route was heavily suncupped and runnelled below 8k.
Good work on your August turns! Here is a picture from Grant Peak looking towards your group.
Cheers,
Nick

Yesterday got my first lap in on El Colorado's awesome, ambiguously open/closed road skiing.
Looks great ! I remember the road and all the hairpin turns.
yes, go for a walk, and please send plane ticket immediately!

looks similar to the aftn light I get on Mt Lassen (NE aspect) * * *
Nice report, and sounds like excellent lonely skiing! Likely made even better by canned, smoked seafood. One of my favorite mountain treats.
You are a traveling mochien nice trip.
I'm not familiar with late-season melting patterns on that line, but the only signs I saw of a potentially thinning snowpack were the holes starting to open up among some rocks.
Who knows, with the impressive snowpack there, might make it all the way until some autumn snow falls arrives, in which, it will have been in the entire year!

@ Jonathan, glad I could help stoke the confidence. I agree about the spooky factor through the top. Kind of wish I had brought my helmet. I was more worried about rock and kept looking up. Think the line will last the month?
@Brandon, sorry to hear you're departing, but good choice on the destination. Think I'll need to head south and give you a visit. I should have called last week and tried to recruit you, it was one of those rash decisions to leave town late...

Hey there E.N. Thought I should let you know I am moving to South Lake Tahoe to ski the Sierra backcountry for a couple years. Let me know if your traveling south any time soon and we should hit up some of the steeps down here.
Huge thanks for the beta!
On Monday, although we had a good view from ascending earlier in the day, as well as my waypoint from a prior descent, still, the top is steep and has an unnerving off-camber feel, plus the view of the full length isn't available until in the heart of the chute, so I was very reassured that it had recently been skied:

We were part of the slogfest up to Muir. Hung out for a long time on Anvil savoring the views then headed down late in the day. In spite of the vertical snow textures it was mostly soft on top so fun skiing.
it seems like the sequence should've been pond-jump-pond ;D
Looks like a good time!

It was very doable and didn't look likely to melt out soon, though the suncups in the chutes (such as they are) SUCKED.
Are ski lines still continuous to the creek? Any pics of that?

Still looks good might hit it in September.

#47: :)
46 for me, you are one ahead. But, I will make #47 more worthwhile than this jaunt. I was admiring the pix of Ruth from a couple of days ago, might be just a little better in September than it was for us last fall. I just love that summit view.
Absolutely, Sky. This guy was doing something very different, using different skills and presumably for different reasons. If I had seriously thought his accomplishment detracted from what Greg and Ryan accomplished I'd have politely (and uncharacteristically) kept quiet. Sorry if it appears to anyone that way to anyone.

(Plus Ryan and Greg were skiing and why would anyone climb a volcano without skiing it!?)
Mark, I agree that this man has done something quite impressive but, for me, I'm not sure he "raised the bar" compared to the skiing exploits documented here.
I admire the style used by Greg and Ryan much more. They didn't even have a car shuttle in place; they were committed to the unknown. This guy had people carry food and gear for him to the Baker base and hired Volken's company.

Should be plenty of snow for turns in the Basin but pretty mellow skiing.....a good mixed climb. A loop around to Lillian Lake might be interesting if you have a couple days. Definitely bring a whippet or an axe for traversing those north facing snow slopes in the am.

Sounds like you need a pair of Bigfoots!
Pic here of my pair after triumphantly skiing the last remaining snow of "Lucky Shot" at Crystal on August 7.
They have a binding that takes to any boot that can use "Salewa" style crampons. Don't know what they weigh but prob less than 4 lbs.

Thanks for the TR. We are going in to Vesper tomorrow, Sunday, Aug 21. One of my favorites for later season skiing. The South Mountain Loop is one of the jewels of the Central Cascades. So many stashes at all times of the year.

On a side note: My friends AT&T phone had full bars on the Glacier and in the valley.
Bummer, sounds like an otherwise perfect day in the mountains! ;)
You may want to check with the ranger, but I believe goat-mooning is illegal in Wenatchee National Forest...
Not sure where it ranks on the score sheet in the world of animal vandalism but probably a notch below cow-tipping...

Way to go jTack. Looks like you and I are about a week apart on our adventures. We should do one together.
Some goats don't even wait for you to finish...

I think you guys are trespassing, Boreal. (you should of done it at night, under the lights) ! isnt it Truckee-ish ?
- I think they used the horses in a Warren Miller movie, recently
- some great pics. I really like the second one w/ Adams and Rainier !
having family in Portland, I've been on that side a few times. truly, an epic spot to do some turns.

You can almost count on seeing goats around Ingalls Pass these days. It's a target-rich environment for them looking for peed-on ground. I had a close encounter a couple of years ago when one goat got way too close wanting to lick or nibble. Ended up pushing it away with my pack. Maybe we need goat spray.

The Seattle Times had a blurb this week about an "aggressive goat" in the Teanaway area that the Forest Service is warning people to avoid. The article said the goat was in the Longs Pass area. My son and I climbed Ingalls Peak...

Read the line after that---where he said, "So of course I...went back to SKI"
Yeah, man. ;) ;) ;)
and one more lap, on a mono plank, would give him a trifecta ! Oh, Yeah !! 8) ;)
