Great day for touring on Llaima. The view from the summit is impressive. Back in 2005 when we toured on Llaima for Jill's 61st birthday, we pulled the skins about 1500vf from the summit due to icy/rime conditions so your summit photo looks great. We started our tour from the closed ski area and Jill convinced the caretaker to open the lodge for us to stay overnight-a unique experience.
The araucaria provide a wonderful backdrop for the volcano.
Volcan tour ! ;)

Nice report and great effort! I hadn't looked at TAY for a few weeks and it was neat to check in and see an ambitious trip from Oregon. Looks like your dog was loving it.
Cool video!
Looking forward to another great year of TAY

I don't know about Macs, but Windows 7 has a pretty sweet built in screen capture program.
On a Mac, it's Shift,Apple,4. Then drag/expand to what you want to take a picture of. It then saves directly to the desktop. Sweet!!! I never knew...
Wonderful pictures, and a great trip report. That is an ambitious ski this time of year. Thanks
Thanks for sharing. Brings back memories of tromping around those mountains as an exchange student in Santiago. I had quite the epic trying to traverse the Sierra de San Ramon on foot early winter. It was unique that we started and ended the traverse on public transit.
Awesome. Those mountains look impressive in your photos, so I'm sure they're even much more so in person.
I live a little north of Mammoth and was also seeing a resemblance to the Sierra, especially in the walk out through the small, scrubby brush. Safe travels!

With dilligence the cracks were manageable.... Cheers I hope things work out....
Quite the forecast, splitboarder, looks like we are getting closer to the winter cycle again..

ah, the dream. lucky you. I started doin B/C in the Sierra's (Mammoth, of course). the lower part of the one pic looks similar to Convict Lk. But the peaks in the back resemble a kind of Rockies look, being thicker as opposed to more pointy. I gues it offer both !
- you rock, I love those kind of reports. you didnt eat a chocolate chip Clif bar also, while rehydrating ?

Did not take a up-close look at Russell.
I went via the primary trail down to Spray Falls, up the switch backs, and then turned at around 5800ft following a smaller trail towards Observation Rock.
I assume Knapsack trail goes east up from Mowich lake via Knapsack Pass? Is that actually faster?
I wouldn't say faster, but going downh...
The weather forecast is calling for freshies above 6 or 7000 feet this weekend! Bring on winter 2011-2012!!!
Good work t! Now for month 13.... It will be so easy.
Nice! Planning on spending the weekend up there, hope the weather forecast improves! Were the cracks easily manageable?
Wow that first photo is amazing and congrats guys that area is stunning!

What an adventurous tour for August! Love it!
Would like to hear Trevor's writeup of how well that tongue-out snowboard binding trick worked. As good as, or better than, using 3 buckle AT boots as far as the feel?
The system that incorporated the AT boot tongue and ski strap felt a little stiff for my liking after giving it a go a couple runs. I simplified it dow...
All we found was ego crushing snow. Apparently it was still impressive to the parking lot hords, so maybe our standards are just too high!? ;D
Mtnmanb, you never know until you go... but if I were you I'd head out to Ptarmigan Ridge. That seemed to be where all the cool kids that knew something were heading.

Thx for the TR, I was wondering about the Flett.
Did you go via Knapsack or the primary trail? Did you look east of Observation, to the Russell? Crevassed heavily?
Yea, that pic doesn't do that headwall justice (in terms of steepness). Nice work!

Glad to meet you folks out there, and glad to see you got some skiing in. I took a couple of laps on Ptarmigan Ridge--nothing too special, but a spectacular day out there. The whole Barometer Mountain herd was cooling itself at the Chain Lakes Trail intersection; they must be enjoying the absence of foot traffic this year just as I did.
I managed to crash ridiculously hard on the final drop above the parking lot, leaving plenty of pink snow and an irrevocably crushe...

Nice report! Do you think the "lookers right" side still goes this weekend?

Russell looked pretty good from my perspective....not too many crevasses at all really.
Nice work! I was up there on saturday and dropped in off the south east side of Observation, connecting with the snowfield that separates Echo from Observation. Conditions werent too bad overall :) Bugs at Spray Park were less enjoyable though

Beautiful terrain and just north of the ski region of the Farellones.
Jeez, that's nice. Any of that hold for mid summer?
Any knowledge of January wildflower show and wildlife?

Awesome Drew -- La Paloma looks amazing. Sounds like you're making a lot out of the marginal season down there.
Oh man, beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
While you and Andy were making turns I was flying burns. I think you had the most fun.
Best outhouse photo ever.
Incredible day, especially for September!!! Thanks for the TR Jess- loved getting out there with you and Dod. Cross fingers that October treats us just as well!
Thanks for the compliment RK.
I also plan on getting up there earlier next year because I'd rather ski, than hike, Wurtz Basin.

Hmmm, how do you extract a still from youtube? (I have a MAC).

Nice, I went up the week before you. Both chutes were continuous then, although I went too far skiers left, and climbed down through some rocks before finishing down to the lake. It's a good workout, and a nice slope. I've got to hit it earlier next year to enjoy it more. Great pictures, Spresho.
In 2005, Jill and I toured from the closed ski area at Las Trancas. When we returned in 2007, we rode the lifts and could see the variety of terrain nearby. We met a "guide" who said he took people on tours in the area.
Hopefully, the weather pattern will change for you.

Doesn't count...with this kind of motivation you have to go 3x per month.
Now you did it.
His next 12 Months will likely be solo... and not necessarily just solo skiing. ::)
Congrats on a wonderful 12 months of sliding.
Very nice video.

Nice video and congratulations! I still have still never made it for the full 12. People at work are talking about how great it is that summer has finally arrived and I keep looking fwd to late oct. Hiking and climbing are great but it aint pow.
Wow that looks nice! And a hot springs, starting to sound too good to be true
I'm signing up for spanish lessons to investigate.

DAMN that is a lot of snow still. Sometimes that south facing slope in pic#1 is just patches by mid July. Looks like the snow is still enabling very efficient traversing once beyond the Ptarmigan/Chain Lake trail split.
Pizza and beer certainly is a powerful draw; that (or cheeseburgers and beer) is one of the few things that can get me down off a nice snowy mountain in the hours prior to sunset when there were still turns for the having.

The snow quality may have gone south, but the setting was worth 4,000 vertical feet of crummy turns.
Nice, it looked really good out there!
