Saw your tracks a few days later, agingclimber.  Either you are a way stronger skier than me, or conditions have deteriorated quickly in the heat, because we couldn't find smooth areas at all above 8000'.  Exciting runnel traverses!
Nice work agingclimber, and welcome to TAY!
Absolutely amazing and inspiring!  Thanks for the photos!
Awesome!  Way to take advantage!
Cem strikes again.
In the first photo of your TR, is the center section of the mountain heavily crevassed?  It looks beautiful.
- nice report, thanks for the honesty on the slippage. I think thats one of the great things of what we do. learn by experience, and future judgement. nice pics
Congrats.

Now the pressure's on.
Sweet.
Nice video.
Congratulations.
It's never too late for the SW chutes!
Pretty fantastic for September, I'd have to agree.
Good report.  Looks like you crossed over right near our 9/2 high point.  It's shorter than going up Paradise Basin, but we could skin shortly after the Sluiskin Memorial.  Our ascent and descent lines were barely continuous, but I'd bet $ that a lot has gone the past few days.

This TR is the closest I've seen you come to skiing with others---usually you are a "Lone Wolfs".   8)

I'm guessing the first photo was taken a bit before August???

You guessed right Mac, it was taken this spring on a day tour to the Ridge. I thought it best captures the beauty of this area.

Thanks to others for comments to the post .............

Thanks, Silas. As a lurking hiker, the condition reports are greatly appreciated.

And the pictures, always.      :)
Gorgeous!  It looks like April!  Always wanted to ski that area, it's so remote and such an enticing traverse.

Great trip report and photos.  ;)
This TR was worth the wait!
I'm guessing the first photo was taken a bit before August???
- send those pics to Backcountry mag or their snowboard mag, Kronicle. And I wish you luck with the road. Could you say a bit more about the road.
Inspiring trip! What a beautiful tour.  I really enjoyed all the photos on Picassa.

THE TURNS-ALL-YEAR SKIER
Here’s an ode to the Turns-All-Year skier,
Who follows a sport some think queer.
Snow all ‘round the seasons
Makes for really good reasons
To go touring, ski down, and drink beer.

Excellent day, Silas and Eric; kind of a mix of July and autumn.  The snow had a few almost-gaps in the basin below Cowlitz Rock, and we barely threaded a line on skiers' far right, but the conditions were outstanding.  Almost no suncups.  You can stil...
Hi ejk,

You can start from the Timberline parking lot no problems.  Get a free climbing permit/wilderness permit from the climbers cave located in the Wy'East lodge.  Usually I do this, but didn't bother yesterday.

Follow the paved path towards the Pacific Crest Trail and continue hiking up along the trail towards the Mile canyon.  You can hike this trail up to near 7000 feet (just below the top of the mile chairlift and the two large buildings that are obvious fr...
I haven't done any touring around Hood at this time of year, so I've got a few detail questions - I'm exploring doing this tour this weekend :)  I assume you started from Timberline?  And can you just hike to the snow, and skin up from there, or are there any passes/fees to get before you do it?

Also, since I'm not familiar with the glaciers of Mt. Hood, I'm a bit curious as to the safety of the Zigzag Glacier - not too broken up / well bridged right now?
What an adventurous tour for August! Love it!
Would like to hear Trevor's writeup of how well that tongue-out snowboard binding trick worked. As good as, or better than, using 3 buckle AT boots as far as the feel?
inspiring, Jamie.  Nice tracks in the third photo!
Looks lovely!  Thanks for the pics and detailed information..  Maybe next week!!!!!
Nice, Matt. Love the shot of the Reid glacier.
We're headed up tomorrow to get our Sept. ski.
Should be back in time to watch the Ducks beat LSU (fingers crossed)
Congrats on over 10 years of TAY!
Nice!  I skied off Illuminaiton Saddle today with nobody around.  The snow on the Zigzag was really good and I ended up riding all the way to just below the top of the mile, then bootong over to ride the groomer!  Saw your big tracks ripping up the groomer and wondered who made those!
Looks like good skiing.  Peace and Blessings, Stabke.

the only reason I caught the perfect snow (2 " of slush), is we had our warmest temps of the summer last wk.

Yikes!  Warmer than the mid 90s of early July?

Here in the Region Metropolitana, Chile, a warming trend currently threatens the lacking snowpack. We're hoping a small system delivers bigger than forecast this Saturday and that temps stay low to allow the season to stretch through the month.

So familiar in the Andes.  Makes a short (less than a month) ski trip down there such a gamble. :-(
Great backdrop for fresh tracks.

Hopefully, the forecast will deliver for you.

Here, the forecast is for sunshine and high 70's or low 80's.  I must say the salmon fishing has been incredible.  We're feasting on salmon and crab and filling up the smokehouse.   ;)

Except for the occasional 3' pit, cups were minimal.  The snow was really perfect once I got down 500-1000', even if there had been 3"-6" cups, they would have scuffed off in a turn.

There are some incipient cracks above the white river cornice that may open in the next few weeks.  I skied the west side of the ridge.  If one skied the east side, you would want to watch for those, and make sure you knew where the edge is.

yaa, Telemack.  I wouldnt bother skiing on Lassen/ the main snowfield directly next to the trail, has snow the latest, but the Mtn is closed for the Nat'l Park trail-work. the chute from the top, by the trail typically gets very bumpy, and you can't usually access that, because it ends in dirt. (their rule is, you can only be on snow without going to dirt).
the slope I skied is adjacent to the sub-hill, named on the topo as 'Ski-Heil' pk. that means in German ski h...
Anyone skiing from the summit, or is it restricted?
Where were your perfect 300' of turns?
I hope to get back down there....

So... when you refer to the "White River Falls TH"

Confusing because it's from the other side of the mountains, just north of Lake Wenatchee.  Here's the PCT washout map from the trailhead with my route marked in green.  By the way, the through-hikers I met told me they ignored the detour and followed the PCT around the W side of Glacier peak. ...
So... when you refer to the "White River Falls TH" were you able to go up rd #23 or did you start right from the Mountain Loop Hwy?  Sorrry; just a bit confused!

P.S. that's an awesome effort.  Congrats!
that evokes my feelings for the love of winter - thanks Drew  :)
Impressive. I love seeing close photos of glacier peak since they are relatively rare here. I've been close to glacier back in the day. Now it seems and sounds like it may be out of reach for a 9-5 weekend warrior like me. So thanks for sharing your adventure and photos.
Dry sneaker trail walking to about 6500'.  Once you cross north of the White Mtn. ridge, east of the PCT at White Pass, you can put on your skis.  I slept on dry pumice at Glacier gap and half the ascent was on pumice, half on snow.  I had no crevasse difficulties at all.  Definitely bring your skis!  Take an extra day though.  After such a long approach, it makes sense to get in some runs.  From Glacier Gap you can ski north facing slopes (just to the sou...
Great TR Tex!  am thinking of heading up there this weekend and have been debating carrying skis - what elevation did you hit snow?  any crevasses or other hazards encountered?  Thanks!
Those goats don't seem to care about the symmetry of their tracks at all.
^^^ Nice shot of Baker right there.
Baker from N. Twin, yesterday. So much snow left in the high country!
Ebeam,
Nice to meet your group up top.  I was part of the 2-some skinning off Grant peak as you guys came up.
Suprising how great the Roman wall skied that late in the day.  The Coleman route was heavily suncupped and runnelled below 8k.
Good work on your August turns!  Here is a picture from Grant Peak looking towards your group.
Cheers,
Nick

Yesterday got my first lap in on El Colorado's awesome, ambiguously open/closed road skiing.

Looks great !  I remember the road and all the hairpin turns.
