Nice pictures as usual Stoudema.

I was up there on Saturday too, but on the White River side. Climbed up through the Ski area and along the White River Glacier to the base of Crater Rock. Great conditions for early October and one long run back to the parking lot. The weather was absolutely perfect too.

Met you at the buttom of the snowfeild when the fog rolled in, perfect timing huh?   Good to know your name on TAY and nice work on the photos?  How did the gap fo the rocks turn out?

Headed for Anvil Rock but the wind had swept it clean of any new snow leaving it brown and icy. Descended the Muir Snowfield instead. Snow was wind affected and firm but rode softer and sweeter than expected. Worthy conditions for the 8th of October.

Thanks for sharing your epic trip, Alfred.
It was nice meeting you and skiing with you at Snoqualmie Pass last winter.
Really nice run.  Doesn't that sand / sharp rock / gravel hike back over to Mile canyon just suck?

Southside typically does melt out completely by late August / September, except for a small postage stamp snowfield that Timberline track-packs all winter and salts all summer.  This year had a great winter snowpack and little to no summer here on Hood.

Timberline's back open for fall operations this year.  Last year they had to wait for winter snow.

Wow - that looks awesome up there for October!  I didn't know that the Little Zigzag held snow all through the summer, it must have been nice to be able to hit that up I bet.  It looks like it was a great day for it - we were out surfing/boogie boarding at the coast and caught the sunshine there too.  Really looking forward to the snow season on Hood...
I wouldn't call it freshies, but I would call it very good :). Some of the smoothest snow I've skied up there on Saturday. Can't wait to get back up next weekend.
Wow! Looks like an Adventure!
noice.

was up with kevino & 2 non-tayers on the 7th & had some nice conditions as well.
Hi Mtraslin,

I used a Canon Rebel T2i with a 28-135 mm lens....
Good one!

What camera did you use to get those shots....Thanks in advance.
That last picture makes me really miss Mt. Hood.

Is that a binding mounted 10" back from your tip? Interesting rig.

Funny you noticed that.  Those are the Karhu Meta with the universal binding replaced with three-pins.  They have a partial skin permanently affixed.  I love these skis for tooling around the woods, but they are pretty scary for steeper terrain.  120cm with decent shape and...

Ha, you win. Did you throw any sparks?
Now that is something to brag about, wish I would have rallied and done the same.  I rode my bike to eburg via Mission today, and there was still three inches in the shaded places, but it would be hard to string a run together, nice going.
The turns bellow anvil were still visible today  ;)
Great trip.

How lucky we were to nail that window way up there in the sun...and in early October!

Here's a good shot of Silas at the fog level around 8K feet in the Pow.

-My first TAY.... Nailed that on a "powder" day.  Go October!

2011/2012 Goals

Most excellent
!Viva La Nina muy bonita!
a great day to get my first TAY... it was fun skiing with you silas and zach
Congrats on TAY! We were up on the S side of Hood that day. I missed September turns by a day and have to start at month one again... :(
Little mixup here but can get my reply off in 2 reports. Anyway the previous pic is about 1/2 a mile from the real patch.  I have been skiing this run for quite a few years. The peak I believe is 9001 ft and I call it PZ Peak and the run I call CJ's.  Just names I have made up over the years.  The real Patch is famous among snowboarders as they have brought them up 2 and a half miles into the wilderness and left them there for pretty much the whole summer.  I took a pic of it on Sept 23, 20...
Hey, J 4  actually this is not the patch.  Here is your same pic on sept 3 of this year

Ahh, the Patch.  My wife and I lived in Tahoe for 30 years, and we have skied Sept, Oct, and Nov. turns there for many many years.  We skied the 4th of july there for the better part of those 30 years.  We have skied there late in the summer when there was a really nice solid bump line from top to bottom.  Great to see it is still used.  Keep it up.

Thank you FreeBird.

Thank you Stoudema. I was sitting on the deck of the Cloud Cap Inn on Friday night talking to a few of the Crag Rats about that route, while we were watching a ton of rockfall come off the right side ridge above the moraine. And while they were telling me about the most recent casualties and unrecovered climbers and skiers in that area over the years.

Congratulation to you and Alan.  Looks like you have another trailbreaker.  ;)
Congrats on the 12 months!  The bridge across Eliot Cr has been washed out for some time.  To hit Snowdome, hike up to the base of the Eliot Glacier and cross the lower glaicer (relatively crevasse free) and follow your nose from there.  Sounds like you didn't need the Dome to have fun though ;)
Ha! I just saw this.  Good write up Gary.  It conjures fond memories of a great trip.

Thanks again fellas.
Winchester - off the Mt. Baker Highway. It's a pretty sweet hut with tons of access right out the front door. We only spent one night there and I was pretty wiped so we ended up not skiing too much more. There's about 7 miles of road to slog through and then a short up to the hut. We went late spring so we only had about 5 miles of road. Larabee will be on the list next time around.
where was that lookout tower?
Awesome trip and report! I'm reading the biography of Herb and Lois Crisler, "Beyond the Trails", which chronicles many early trips in this area. He'd be proud of you guys!
Way to sample the new snow! Hope to catch up with you again this winter...
Thanks Mike!
I always enjoy your video's too.
socked in above 8500 today, new snow below 7000 or so was rained on hard.
Is Lanin next??  I climbed it years ago in the summer and remember it has quite a view also....Thanks for the inspiring TR!
Nice stuff Forest. Looks a lot different than it was just last weekend.

Mtraslin, Baker can be awesome in October! I hope it clears up in the next week or two.
Good one....

Thanks for the update....I have wanted to do an october summit for some time now...If a good weather window shows up.
Classic heavy music!!!! Made me want to be twenty again... Nice touch at the end of the video....
Thank you for letting me tag along and satisfying by curiosities.  Excellent meeting y'all and the great turns, especially coming down the head wall on far skiers right.

Look forward to next wild ride!
Thanks for the report, nice to hear you Southerners are having your best September ever, just as we are up here in the PacNW.
Looks like the snow has held up well through the hot September!  There should be plenty for October turns!  Illumination Saddle is a pretty place this time of year - nice report!
Pretty similar on the 28th on the Squak Glacier. Some sections were purely a thick raincrust due to the wind.
Nice trip.  I always hike too far thinking...switch to skins...next leaner rock...next sitting rock...just a little further.  Feels so good when the pack goes back on without the skis n boots.

very cool to see...thx for the report!
