That beer was my old man's. It was funny. I met three groups on the way up the n ridge sunday. Two of them asked me about that beer ;).

It was real warm while we were there with the forecast to continue, and the drifts probably went down from 6" to a foot during that one day. So I'd be real surprised if lots of parking wasn't melted out by then.
There are a few problematic downed trees across the top end portion of the CS campground road and sprinkled throughout the campground itself. They have st...
Great to see that you and your dad had an enjoyable trip. Those shared memories last a lifetime. ;)
We actually talked to the guy that got seperated from his girlfriend, and he said there were 4 rescues in the area that day. Any idea what the other circumstances were?
I believe that my group talked to you briefly on the False Summit, Buck. The mountain really did ski fine from top to bottom.

Nice TR, telemon! You were probably following some of our tracks from last week down the chutes! A great run... much better than that shot we did off Herman's saddle earlier this year!
Gracias Senor Tim. Federales habla problema e ski hombres ? Construca barricado eh ?
I hope you guys remembered the Guiness at around 6600 or 6800 near the left side of Adams Creek?
We saw it on our way in Saturday and our way out on Sunday.
It was so tempting, but we didn't want the bad Mountain Karma. :)

Who skied the "bestest?" 8)
Vinny gets the style points for his solo 6pm descent.
I skied the South Sister the day before this report. I camped the previous night and was surprised at how warm it stayed late into the night. Although things firmed up overnight, it was never cold. If the weather stays the same, you could probably dispense with some of the cold weather gear. I didn't take crampons or an axe, but they would've come in handy in the morning hours. Neither were essential, however. You could probably get away with packing...

At the bottom we watched the rest of our party descend NFNWR, a cool site.

Our group was also asked about our permits as we neared Cold Springs on our way out by a ranger who was a bit lost. We saw a female ranger in the rocks above the lunch counter who appeared to be taking our picture as we skied by. I guess we're a photogenic bunch. We parked at Morrison and were fortunate getting a ride out from some climbers who had "punched through" to Cold Springs. Unfortunately I left my poles in the back of their truck. As for the...
No man, I think that is me! That's was my sixth or seventh day skiing, ever. ::) ;D <-- (just to be clear, these are here b/c I ski crappy)

Hmm could this be you skiing down around 1 PM this pick was taken from Steamboat Prow
As of Monday morning 6/26 the drifts are puched through to a few parking spaces at the west end of Cold Springs CG. Three foot plus drifts going east in the caampground from there and around the 2 heads. Hey!
I was in the party of 5 that ran into you guys at the snowline. We ended up camping at a great spot on the ridge about 1/4 mile before the carry past Cathedral Rock. Off snow, 360 degree views, running water, the works!
Skied to the summit via the notch below the spire above the Daniel Glacier the next day. Daniel and Lynch glaciers are really filled in. The Lynch was begging to be skied, but we didnt have time. We descended via the notch south of the east summit...

I was planning on heading up South Sister for some turns this week, but your trip report on Middle is swaying me in that direction. I've not done it and the Hayden looks enticing. I'd prefer to go as light as possible and wonder what I might get away with in the way of gear. I imagine this heat wave is opening things up a bit. I appreciate any beta. Thanks.

I'm interested in discussing the Adams + St Helens fees. But how about moving that to Random Tracks? I'll start ...
Outstanding idea. Thanks.
And Tim: thanks for the report on conditions and access. I spent myself on Baker this weekend...

I suppose the rationale for collecting the "volcano fees" is to help defray the costs of patroling the slopes. The beneficiaries of a government expense should pay the costs, right? If so, then I would suggest that the government levy a fee on flag waving in order to help defray the trillion-dollar-a-year cost of supporting the bellicose jingoism that the flag has come to represent. >:(
Just my opinion.

Sorry I wimped out, guys, but thanks for the report! Much less snow than 2 years ago, it seems.

The feds are shaking everyone down for their $15 volcano permits, even turning folks back that do not have their permits on them. Some scofflaws were rumored to be skinning through the trees past their checkpoint. ::)
Just a thought, if they plan to turn people around they should supply enough permits at the ranger station for people to give them money...
Nice to get back to the Goat Rocks with skis. A stellar day out all around.

Wolf and I had a great time on the SW Chutes. The first 2500 feet was really good corn...and I at least enjoyed the rest, despite the mush factor. Amazingly we were able to ski from the summit. How often is that possible? I think we started down around 3:30.
Somehow we missed the feds, so our purchase of the volcano pass was...er...uh...foolish. But at least we didn't have to worry about it. We took the black butte variation to the lunch counter. The feds must have been on the no...

i agree, nice report scottk! way to get your kids exposed to climbing/bx skiing/sledding at such young ages. :)

I have to admit that I once thought about coming back with skis when hiking Mailbox in late winter, but quickly my mind shifted to "what the HELL are you thinking of?" But I love knowing that someone actually found it to be a worthy enterprise.
Guess we missed that snow ribbon, unless it melted (there were discontinous ribbons of snow along the logging roads we hiked up, but didn't reach mostly continous snow until crossing over the ridgeline near ~4,300-ft. That line of snow looked like it continued further down the western side of the ridge some distance, but decided not to chase that ribbon down since it was nearly dark by then.

I've done both Broken Top and South Sister, but not on the same trip. It would be possible to do both in a day each with 1-2 nights camping, but later in the summer the approach to the South Sister becomes longer (and Broken Top too!) due to the south exposure. The hike in with boots becomes longer to find continuous snow for skinning). This can make for a pretty long day from start and return to the trailhead ;)
Nice job milking the short drive/short haul route! Somehow more sensible than Mailbox. Did you find the 2-3' wide snow ribbon along the upper logging roads there and was it useful? That was an amusing phenomenon we discovered in an almost-too-late outing a few years ago.
If you get too lost up there you could stay at the Stash Shack, there's three bunks and a bunch of stale Budwieser 8)
So it's pretty manageable to summit and out in a day? I want to get down there this summer but was thinking of 1-2 nights, and including Broken Top.
Well said! ;)

hi altasnob,
for the summit pyramid, is there enough snow to boot up it? i couldn't quite make that out from your pic. we're heading there this weekend and wondering if summitting in ski boots is an option. oh and while i'm at it, was there much ice? if we had to place pro for the steeper section, would screws be more useful than pickets?
much obliged,

Wish I could have joined you. The Turtle looked in fine form from Muir on Sunday.
Thanks for the info. I was hoping someone would post a report. I saw a ton of cars parked at the trailhead last saturday, but didn't hear any reports. I'm heading up tomorrow afternoon to camp above Moraine. Sounds like everything should be fine Saturday morning. Thanks again.

Hey Jimmy,
Nice report! Glad you guys stayed flexible in your plans and had fun. It was very rainy here in town on Friday morning, so I'm glad you were able to hold it off as long as you did!
