This is Jeannie, the barefooted woman.  :)

The road is snow free and in pretty darn good shape, considering the season.  Glad to hear you all made it down safe!
Glad to hear your brother made it to the top!  Great news and it looks like we'll be reading Hummel Skiing and Mountaineering stories for years to come.  And agree, the snow was amazing- we had a blast too.

Not sure why the West Crater route isn't the "standard" route to the top, but that day I'm glad it wasn't.  The first pic shows maybe 15-20 people on their way up the pearly gates.  There's that roll-over bulge just to the left of the hogs back to...
Hey Glenn, were you able to drive right to the trailhead, i.e. is the road snow-free?
Nothing but ripples? The outside waves look like 6' faces. Vat is dis you say?
MD  I was igcognito on randonee gear ! and yes that was us going up to the saddle in the rain. It was the group whining that drove us off. I have been driven out of there by some serious lightening on a day like sunday. But then again "Skiing for your life " sounds pretty committed.
Looks like you got the good company and the prettiest weather!  Nice pics :)
Joe - stream of garbage aside - Chris and I could work a car shuttle with you all at Shasta next month to make up for it.
Teter you take some nice pictures.
I like the hang fire right below the cornices on "Smoka, Shepard's, Chute 69"
Good work with the camera.
When was that taken? Must have been a good snow year based on the lower cliff coverage.
Oh..Bring a rope if you plan to do that chute this year, I think that inch of rain yesterday  may have taken it out in the midsection. The one skiers right may still be a do-er.
We decided to stay up on Naches while the weather was good but my friends ski clicked out of the binding and we had to search a cliff band for a hour to find that his binding was broken so we had to go to the tipso parking lot to find a screw driver and by the time we summited again it was pouring rain but heres some pics http://img110.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=dsc08275copy3hv.jpg
Ive rode out there quite a few times this winter and on one ocassion I was out there with a few ski Patrolers and they told us it was the smoka chute andways here is a pic of it in mid season
http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/4179/smoka5jp.jpg glad to see the line is still doable I assembled a group to do it a few weekends ago from chinook but the traverse was to dangerous with wet slides
Sorry Joe. Didn't even think about that :-[. That would have been a great idea and saved you a lot of trouble.  :(
That's what happens when a bunch of fools like us get on the snow, only thing on our brains is " got to get some turns, got to beat him to the top/I like my orange ski boots/I'm thirsty/got to get some turns/my tan is coming along/got to get some turns/I think I look good in these sunglasses/ wish they would put a chair up here/ can't stop or she&#...

how long did that take?

Counting the 1/4 mile detour to a chute that had to big a cornice to even sneeze. 7 Plus hours, no race that's for sure.

Way to go! That's one of my favorite lines.
Good seeing you again this spring!
Right you were, Mr Zap!  Nice to meet you, it looked like you had a great run.
nice!

I've had a couple ski and sea weekends this spring too, though I haven't managed to used the longboard and the skis in the same day...I gotta try that :)

Westport was about as small as I'd ever seen it on friday night and saturday morning.  I figured when it feels easy for me to paddle outside at the jetty, then its gotta be small.  At least on Friday evening there were only a few other surfers in the water (and a couple fat sealions)  so there wasn...
Too bad about the weather, but it sounds like you made it work.  That sure looks like good skiing over there; I gotta ski Snowking someday.
Sky to sea!!! Sorry the waves didn't work out for you. I was down at oswald and the same toilet bowl existed down there. >:(
Nice job Mark and Joe. ;D
Thanks for being patent with my husky who would have followed you all the way if he could have. :D

Alisa, my wife Pam and I had a great day at the pass .I was very proud of my wife as that was her first day of steep skinning  which she handled very well thanks to Alisa's gentle teaching. She told me to piss off. Why is that guys can't teach their wives driving or skiing?

Nice chute and congrats on your ballsy descent.
The S...
wow that looked like fun :)
how long did that take?

hey Robie, I didn't even notice you up there - or I didn't recognize you. Did you arrive just after we skied our first run. We were surprised to see the little poodle dog come out to greet from the camp on our way out. That must have been you all climbing up the Naches NE bowl just before the downpour.

Sometimes it's good to ski the backside while waiting for the NW face to soften. Sunday we were just showing off. ;)
Good to hear you got to ski the bowl.  We're planning on South Sister this weekend.  Have you (or anyone else) heard anything on conditions there?  We're hoping to ski from car to car, but I don't know what the chances of that are...
Chute 1a on Constance was in good shape on 5-21.  Stone and Skokomish were in pretty fun conditions back in February as well...kinda icy but it wasnt too bad.  I like skiing in the Olympics  ;D
That 'trail' was my first ever hike in the Olympics -- Nice work making it up there despite our fickle weather!
Looks like a killer trip, Cass.  I climbed Mt. Stone about seven years ago, and we camped at Lake of the Angels.... your pics bring back memories, even tho there wasn't any snow there at the time!!

We couldn’t wait to strap the skis back onto the packs for the fun knee-jarring hike down, including crawling back through the cliffbands on the “trail”.

nice job you all, way to bag that knob!  8)

Enjoy, Bob
MD ,We were part of that crowd. We tried to end our day skiing from the  False summit of Naches but bailed at the saddle due to thunder and rain.
More snow than Ive seen there and I was suprised to see yall ski down the other side. Thanks for expanding my horizen! Did ya see the little poodle dog that made it up there ?
Way to go!  That's one of my favorite lines.  We call that mountain "Peak 69" and we've tossed around a few names for that couloir (another story).  Good seeing you again this spring!

Nice trip.  I have usually done the traverse in late April or May, so it was encouraging to see the amount of snow around Shepards. Thanks for the GPS info.

whoa, i bet that was your favorite part!!  ;)

sounds like you guys had some quality burly time together.  hot pics too...way to get out there where no one ever skis!!  :D
It was a great day on the mountain and fun to share.  Nice photos Marco.

Anyway, the skiing was awesome!  The visibility was near zero for the first 3500', with a pretty good snow storm happening as well.

Sweet. Thanks for the report!
My pack and board were buzzing also, which was a little disconcerting.  I think my wife might have thought I was a little crazy when I told her that there was a loud buzzing in my head.  The snow was incredible!

Descending from the top.

Lower down.
Cool, thanks for the info. It looks like the book has been appreciating.
I was able to find the Northwest Ski Trails book on Amazon and Abebooks

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0006BX1HW/ref=dp_olp_0/102-9977659-8214559?%5Fencoding=UTF8&condition=all

I prefer to use Amazon though
Cool trip. Nice to see that you were able to break out of the clouds and enjoy the sun.
Nice to meet you.

We had a wonderful time skiing, although I waited until everyone had made their way down through the pearly gates where inexperienced climbers abounded. It was very worrisome to watch. I ended up taking my little brother (just turned 8 ) back down to the hogsback and leaving him with my brother while I took another friend to the summit. There was no one on the hogsback or anywhere above. I felt much better about that, even if the ice was raining down by that point i...

Cool trip. I am curious about the "Northwest Ski Trails" book, is it in print anymore? If not, does it have other similar tours like this that aren't in more recent guide books?

The book has been out of print for a long time. For notes about this book and a list of the trips it includes, click here:

This film was sponsored by Fisher Flouring Mills, the makers of Zoom cereal.  In addition to skiing and mountain scenery, the film includes a short scene of the men cooking and enjoying Zoom for breakfast.  "Tasty? You bet!"

Looks like they still make Zoom...will have to take some along on the next trip  :)

Yes, it is in Southern Oregon. Mt. McLoughlin is east of Medford on Hwy 140. Bailey is just north of Crater Lake NP.
Sounds like we just missed you at Paradise.  What time did you leave Paradise?  We picked up our cars at about 10:30, I think.  If had known your plan, I might have....wait, I was too tired, no I wouldn't have. 8)
Right on guys, glad to hear someone else was getting the goods!  Nice photos.
Excuse my ignorance, but where is this? Is it in Oregon?
Bailey looks awesome. 8)
Late reply,  busy week.

Hey Jessica, Chris, Marc, & Kelvin, it was great to meet you all.

New skins for xmas: $60

Two bottles of chocolate moo: $3.50
Earning turns with your 6th grade science teacher: priceless  8)

There were a couple of times when I considered asking for the rope.

Yeah, there were some big holes out there... like this one.   I was generally comfortable with our decision not to rope up, although once we were traversing rather than descending, it would have been easy enough to do.  Thanks for the history of the traverse and the great pics Lowell.  It really added to the trip to...
author=Sam Avaiusini link=topic=4905.msg20696#msg20696 date=1150055132]We managed to not even pull out the ropes although that is a personal choice we all agreed on and I wouldn't necessarily reccommend to all.

I'm glad you mentioned that Sam. There were a couple of times when I considered asking for the rope. But then I looked around and found an alternative route I was comfortable with. Roping for the Emmons crossing probably wou...
We had a massive thunder/lightening/hail storm pass through this afternoon, knocking out our power and allowing Silas to get a report in first. Mt.Cheam is a 6,930' prominent and distinctive peak in British Columbia's eastern Fraser Valley. On a clear day it is visible from Vancouver, but it is at its most impressive when viewed at near sea level from the Trans Canada Highway east of Chilliwack. I had climbed it several times a decade ago, but never on skis. The difficulty is the float...
Thanks for the info. We are planning on going there next week for a day at Hood and a few at Adams.  Sounds good.

I think that Morrison Cr. trail will be a direct route now. I used to ski down that ridge to the west of the Crescent all the way to the forest for a mellow toothpick-tele route. That may be a good way up out of Morrison Cr.
