Guess we missed that snow ribbon, unless it melted (there were discontinous ribbons of snow along the logging roads we hiked up, but didn't reach mostly continous snow until crossing over the ridgeline near ~4,300-ft. That line of snow looked like it continued further down the western side of the ridge some distance, but decided not to chase that ribbon down since it was nearly dark by then.

I've done both Broken Top and South Sister, but not on the same trip. It would be possible to do both in a day each with 1-2 nights camping, but later in the summer the approach to the South Sister becomes longer (and Broken Top too!) due to the south exposure. The hike in with boots becomes longer to find continuous snow for skinning). This can make for a pretty long day from start and return to the trailhead ;)
Nice job milking the short drive/short haul route! Somehow more sensible than Mailbox. Did you find the 2-3' wide snow ribbon along the upper logging roads there and was it useful? That was an amusing phenomenon we discovered in an almost-too-late outing a few years ago.
If you get too lost up there you could stay at the Stash Shack, there's three bunks and a bunch of stale Budwieser 8)
So it's pretty manageable to summit and out in a day? I want to get down there this summer but was thinking of 1-2 nights, and including Broken Top.
Well said! ;)

hi altasnob,
for the summit pyramid, is there enough snow to boot up it? i couldn't quite make that out from your pic. we're heading there this weekend and wondering if summitting in ski boots is an option. oh and while i'm at it, was there much ice? if we had to place pro for the steeper section, would screws be more useful than pickets?
much obliged,

Wish I could have joined you. The Turtle looked in fine form from Muir on Sunday.
Thanks for the info. I was hoping someone would post a report. I saw a ton of cars parked at the trailhead last saturday, but didn't hear any reports. I'm heading up tomorrow afternoon to camp above Moraine. Sounds like everything should be fine Saturday morning. Thanks again.

When are you jibber dudes gonna learn to stay in the park? ;)

Just an observation, but that's actually not Nooksack Tower, but Jagged Ridge with Cloudcap Peak on the far right. Nooksack Tower is out of the frame way left, maybe not even in view from this vantage point.

Hey Jimmy,
Nice report! Glad you guys stayed flexible in your plans and had fun. It was very rainy here in town on Friday morning, so I'm glad you were able to hold it off as long as you did!

Were crampons necessary above lunch counter? We're heading down on Sat. and going to summit on Saturday. Also how far until you can begin skinning or is it easier to just boot up.
I actually used crampons this past Sunday and found them very helpful. It wasn't too bad getting purchase with the boots alone but the crampons lessened all the lit...

I think I owe one of you $10 for convincing me to take the chutes as well. I was sketched by the ice and wind up-top, but it was butter in the chutes after a couple turns.
Thanks again!

Bummer JW; hope that map was still useful in the fog :)

It was an excellent day!
Thanks for the TR and the apt photography. It was sublime watching the little fronts roll in, dump on us for a while and then part the curtains on things like Stuart, Mt Daniel and the Teanaway area. The scenery just got better as the day went on and the light was great.
The skiing was tons of fun too. We'll have to get back there when the fall lines are a little longer and the flats have fewer suncups (though they weren't bad at all). May...

Oh yes, good times ;) Thanks for the video report.
Great to see you're getting out though. And good to see Jen too. My Jen and I say "hi!"

Nice report, thanks for providing useful info about Snowgrass Flats conditions.
We (crew of four boarders) descended Sunday around 4 or 5 PM and had a similar experience; still frozen toward the top, but brilliant below Piker's Peak. Heard back from climbers who had left earlier that the entire mountain was a solid sheet of ice earlier that morning.
I don't know if you could beat the weather we had!

Thanks for the information, guys. It looks good for our trip this Friday, with even better weather in the forecast to forward to.
Great getting out with you Jon. Awesome corn harvesting in the chutes... much better than that vibratory foot massage of a descent off the summit. Some photos from the chutes added below.
Here's one from June 3 that's a little more clear

I think I've skied that small swath of open in forest, halfway down the back of his neck....
dude, epic! Looks like some great schwackin'! Say, the peak behind you in the last photo kinda looks like !$#!%!#% from near #!$#@$ ;) Definitely a very cool area in spite of the brush.

Heh. I contemplated that very log, but instead tried a jumpover crossing that was a failure before I even started. (Tried to toss my skis over first, but the current caught one of them and took it for a little ride. I then had to plunge thru where it came to rest, good cross spot or not. Soggy! Good thing I was five minutes away from being allowed to take em off.)

Splitter, thanks for the photo link of the perspective of the Prow from the Emmons. There was another group of skiers at the Prow while we were up there, which may be the ones standing on the closest edge of the Prow. The group I was in are probably some of those 'dots' on the background skyline :) The upper Inter Glacier definitely had excellent sunny turns 8)
You are all welcome. Too bad this week wasn't my week for the trip, but I hope others can get up there and enjoy good snow AND weather.

Yes, but we need to do the trip first! ;)
Paul's post captured it pretty well: 6-7 hour car shuttle (twice), 6-mile hike (round-trip), a scary river to cross, clouds that wouldn't clear, and an unpromising forecast. We bailed. Of course this coming weekend, when the weather is looking p...

I enjoyed a great view of Airplane Gully while running (okay, more like staggering) up the auto road during the race - still hanging in there with about maybe 100 vertical!
Regarding the questionable memory of some suffering along the way... some friends of mine have a great classification scheme for their climbs or bc ski trips:
Type I Fun: Fun while you're doing it... fun in retrospect
Type II Fun: Not fun while you're doing it... but a fun experience in the rear view mirror
Type III Fun: Not fun while doing it... and not fun in retrospect
Great trip... nice TR

Egad, just look at that global warning carnage. Time was when Tuck's wouldn't look that burned out until at least mid-July. Just reminds me why we all moved out here (though it will always have a 55-degree soft spot in my heart, and even our giant glaciers are melting as well). Now don't get all New England desperate and head for the Airplane Gully....
Cascadesfreak,
As we were coming down, we saw people standing on the prow. I was thinking 'are they watching us watching them?' We were a party of one skier and one boarder. There was a group of 4 telemarkers about an hour behind us and another skier and boarder a little behind them. It looks like you had some sunny turns at the top. The Interglacier has had good conditions two weeks in a row.
