Nice trip summary Allyson!
author=allyson link=topic=4964.msg20907#msg20907 date=1150779476">some crossed by log bridge...
With some attempting the crossing without taking off the skis; glad you didn't fall-in Kam, especialy since the 'rescue rope' was in your pack  ;D
Other trip photos posted
Yes, mountaineering memory seems to afflict most of us and it gets worse as you become a senior citizen.  ;) The snow conditions you encountered reminded me of our descent from the summit a few years back - crusty wind rippled surface for the top 500', then firm windblown for 2000' then perfect corn for another 2500' then a slush cup to the basin.  But the view of sunrise the morning of our ascent stays with me on those early morning climbs.  Congrats to you and Rob...
Nice work!  I think I saw your tracks on the Emmons from Steamboat Prow on Sunday (also watched a skier descending the Emmons while at the Prow, or maybe that was your party?).
So that's what took him so long to get down...  I kept wondering why he wasn't there sooner.  Thanks again to Darryl and Jeanette for their prompt assistance, and to all of you for your concern.  All is well at this end; the goose egg is going down, and the shiner is coming up! No more scary falls for this 'chick on sticks'. -- Jill
Paul and Zee,

Thanks for the feedback!  I'm curious to go back...maybe not all the way to the summit.  But possibly within a 1,000 feet of the crater rim.  If one was lucky enough to get the conditions, it would be a really great ski!

Next time we'll be checking for higher freezing levels and hopefully not be so driven by the logistics of getting a permit.

Robin (Wife of Splitter)
Thanks Charles for the report.  I like the idea or driving a car to Takhlakh Lake instead of an old snowmobile!
Paul,

Was curious if you had more photos.  Your trip has inspired me and my husband (Peter aka Splitter) to put this trip on our list for next year.

Congratulations to you, Lowell, Sam, and Bill!

Robin

P.S.  Any plans to post a trip report on the Glacier Peak/Cascade Traverse?
but I'll be sure to check on the car shuttle time before the next trip

Right.  So what did i do?  I joined Lowell again this weekend for what must be the all time record car shuttle.  Over 500 miles shuttling  trying to do a climb, ski, traverse of glacier peak and cascade crest despite our better judgement with the weather forecast.  We were finally turned back by the Suiattle river crossing which would have involved roping up....
Great job! I've done it twice- both in early June and I've found the best skiing to be when there's a 12,000' freezing level with a noon or 1pm descent.
Nice job, and congrats to you and your wife!  thanks for the great photos and trrip report.  I remember doing the ascent and ski via the emmons 2 years ago with my ski partner from glacier basin.  great trip!  although i recall the ski conditions were pretty mixed then too.
one of the members of the group with a GPS had it just under 16 miles. It ended up taking us until 7:30 to get to the car.  I was kind of surprised it took so, but there's a lot of up and down and we were damn tired on the trip back. We were at the base of the peak near Cougar Lake at 12:30, which I thought was reasonable.  I think we summitted around 2:00.  I think the climb out of Cougar Lake on the return really took a toll.

I thought about Bumping Lake, but I w...

I think Jill and I are going to have to teach these guys how to put a band aid on without the sticky side on the hair :D.

Huh, I thought MD was short for Mad Dog not medical doctor.

Thanks Jill for the opportunity to practice my MOFA skills.  For the future, I recommend that you ask the first aid person if they are MOFA-trained before you let the...
That is a very impressive effort!
How long did that take? Is that about 16 miles RT?
Thanks for the pictures, I have always wanted to do that trip, but always thought it was to far out.
I always thought that entering in from Bumping Lake may make an easier approach, but hey you folks put it down!
Joe
Wow!!
Quite an event. Glad to hear that it just ended in blood and simple cut rather than something more severe.
Good report Zap,  I may have to get out there someday.
It makes a case for the Whippits on the poles, which I have not invested in and wonder on some kick turns if this lower ski possibly slips, it won't be good.

Let's see if I have this right-
Zap and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pair of corn turns.
Jill fell down, got a bloody...
Looking good, and so is the next forecast  ;D

Thanks for the report.
Sorry you got hosed, Charles.

Thanks for the great pictures of the north side, though; it's getting to be about that time...

I leave you kids alone for just one weekend and look what I get

Yep that will teach ya to be gone, when the cat's away the mice will play  ;).

Glad that our "weekend warrior" wasn't seriously hurt.  During the whole ordeal Jill was still able to keep that great smile.  It was a good day to spend with friends, the skiing was great, only sorry that...
The road is completely clear to Morrison Creek. A few snow berms a short bit after there but if you had a good clearance 4WD vehicle you could probably get by them and get much further up the road (probably another mile or so) as there is little snow on the road itself within a mile of Cold Creek CG.

...Zap, you are lucky that Jill is such a tough chick..   ...Way to go Jill!

Good point, JD.
It kind of reminds me of the description Maureen said one of her friends used in describing her and other women that climb to ski:
here are the only pics I got of the coleman side of the mountain...probably not much use to ya, but here they are anyways.

pic 2

also saw this Phil...immediately reminded me our your 'coolguy' movie.
Nice trip...  :)

Did you get any pictures of the coleman headwall?
Todd,

It was a good trip on Friday.  Looks like I missed out on Saturday's sunshine.  I too was suprised at how good the snow was on Friday even though it was foul weather.  It's been a long time since I've been that miserable, but yet that happy at the same time.  I wouldn't have traded it for anything (other than maybe a little better view ;D).  The bowl is still holding good snow for anyone who wants to get out this week.  We were able to ski down to the car, bu...
Glad to hear you guys made it out alive.
Zap, you are lucky that Jill is such a tough chick, if she weren't it sounds like an involved rescue could have happened. Way to go Jill!
P-tex side down!!!!!
;D
Wow.
I leave you kids alone for just one weekend and look what I get:
Broken bodies and blemished and defaced chutes.
Did I mention to you guys that the beer was for after the tour?

Looks like you followed protocol though; looks like you turned around when someone quit having fun  ;).
Good call.

Sorry I missed the Bloody Chutes Fest.  Hope Jill's on a rapid mend cycle.
Hey Bob,

The last few drifts to Morrison CG may be gone. I cannot speak to the 3 miles of road up to Cold Springs/ South Rte TH since I did not go that way.

Have fun!
Thanks for the report. If we can believe the weather forecasts, it is going to be much nicer this coming weekend. I am sorry that our weekends did not match up, but I am sure that there will be more opportunities in the future.

Do you think that there is any chance of 3 or 4 days of warm weather melting out the last bit of road to the Morrision Creek Campground?

Bob
I have used that hut on several father and son trips in the 90's; it is great place for a couple people to stay on a cold night. By the way, Mack, I should be able to answer your Mt.Adams questions; I intend to be there ,and possibly Hood, later this week.
There is an emergency hut @ Waterhole Camp out Obstruction Point Road; check the Seabury Blair guidebook.
There is still a good bit of snow on N faces of the Olys; wanna go somewhere either there or the Cascades this summer?  I'm nor free until July sometime.
Very cool Mack.

My Dad and I just got back from a circuit of looking for championship sized old-growth trees on the Olympic Peninsula.  A fun trip for those seeking a wee bit of exercise sprinkled in between the logger sized meals that are served out there.  Talk about packing in the calories!!

I insisted on a detour to Hurricane Ridge since I'm curious about the area's backcountry, having read trip reports from both you and Chris.  It is very, very nice over ther...

This was one of those weekends where it seems everything went right.

Very nice, great photos!  It's always a plus when things go so well.  Adams has always been on my list of favorite things to do ;D.
Sounds really good.  How much vertical does it add to start from Morrison Creek?

That's what they all say. But the reality is once you try Dynafits, you'll never go to the duckbill again.

Well that may be the case Jeff, but if I do totally betray the duckbill tribe I sure as hell won't be sleeping with my dynafit mounted skis - all those sharp metal bits - eeew  :D freeheel bindings are just sooo... more cuddly.
author=Nick-BC link=topic=4904.msg20837#msg20837 date=1150431762]
However, I don't think I would renounce the duckbill if I strayed from the path of light, AT would just be another option.

Nick, I'm reuniting with Shelley et al at Mt. Hood this weekend.  Have you given up on instruction entirely, or converted to the dark side, or what?

Unfortunately I don't have Randonee boots.  Been looking around but this habit of skiing, boarding and climbing has been way expensive for me.  I adjusted the bindings to fit my La Sportiva Mountaineering boots.  I think they were called the Nepal Extremes when they were on the market.  Not sure if they are anymore.  I've seen them at Second Ascent in Ballard from time to time.  Use to sell for $425 retail.  I picked them up in La Grave FR for $179.&n...

Awesome trip report! You've got me all fired up to go try it now.  Any thoughts on how late into the season this traverse goes?  Sounds like the Interglacier descent was starting to get a bit thin.

The Interglacier still has plenty of snow. We skied the better part of a mile (with several short carries) down the trail below Glacier Basin. The trail will soon melt out, but the Interglacier will be good well into July.

If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend this route.  It puts you in a remote and seldom visited part of the park.  Between Muir and Schurman, there is a very exploratory feel and scenery which is simply amazing.  Just be sure that you do it with access to Cayuse Pass...this will avoid MUCH driving!

Nice TR!  Thanks for the approach update. Is the road still heavily-covered with fallen trees? (seemed like I was constantly weaving through down-fall on the entire road approach ~4 years ago, after hand-sawing through several trees blocking the road to get the car up to the first washout).

I am a bit confused. Are you going to be there on the 22nd and 23rd? Or 15th and 16th? If it the former, I hope to see you, along with my small party of elderly Canadians.

Later,

Thanks for the info. We are planning on going there next week for a day at Hood and a few at Adams.  Sounds good.

I think that Morrison Cr. trail will be a direct route now. I used to ski down that ridge to the west of the Crescent all the way to the forest for a mellow toothpick-tele route. That may be a good way up out of Morrison Cr.

Nice job guys.  Love to see those reports from Cin's part of the world.  Guess I'll be heading that way on  Friday since I wasn't invited to your BBQ  ???   Sorry, couldn't help myself.

A wonderful little tale and a testament of good writing! I was wondering what things would look like a week after we skied it in last week's dusk patrol. Thanks for letting us know.
Hmmm... I'd say whoever guessed "bad fitting boots" wins the bet.  I didn't want to scramble up the rock wearing my huge bulky snowboard boots.  Bare feet have more potential for sneaking into smaller footholds.

So Jeannie, we're still having a hard time getting our arms around the barefoot thing.  Was it a scourging of the flesh?  A Jedi mind trick?  Bad-fitting boots?  You'd settle some bets if you would clarify.  Thanks.

Nothing but ripples? The outside waves look like 6' faces. Vat is dis you say?

Waves could have been nice if it would at least made enough splash to get the jetty wet. ;D  The outside waves just crumbled in the wind with little or no shape.  Sometimes reforming but most times just the white washing machine.  Strong surface current with the wind as well. ...
