I was one of the two guy's with the dog.  You passed by us just as we were entering the flat below the basin.  That was the warm part of the day.  It did finally cool a bit once we topped off on the King.  We hung out on the summit for a bit before heading down.  I'm kicking around the idea of heading back out Saturday morning June 10 for it was pretty good skiing but I hear Chinook is in great shape.  Probably will be heading out that way.  Here'...
I always just yelled, "Grande cocoa!!!", but that's just me.
Nice job!  I've been to McLoughlin several times.  I know about the getting lost part!  I still think that gps units is cheating.  I like the map and compass.  Keeps you sharp.  One time though, I thought I was going to have to spend the night out in the woods with the bears. ;D
I was doing a lot of thinking about gps at that time...
Good job in documenting the snomo trespass in Wilderness. I am musing about a letter or contact of some sort to the USFS about the topic. I don't know when it will come to fruition since I have a reluctance to even contact the USFS- in my view USFS is a source of huge bureaucratic frustruation, and I do not want to be on their radar. However, my concerns are compelling me to do something.

I find the "joke skis" and "joke boots" comments amusing. My first tele...

Jessica, you brought WANDS?

Okay, Okay. They were sort of a joke, and to let Cass know where to find us if we did indeed go some strange route. Cell phone coverage is spotty up there, ya know, and you can't leave bread crumbs in the snow. Brett called them orange two leaved clovers when Dave plucked one from the snow.
Jessica, you brought WANDS?
Nice to meet you Brett & Dave; glad you were able to make it on a 'dusk patrol' outing on a school night  :)
Mark: your patch-skiin' skillz have become excellent!  ;D

Additional trip photos are posted here

Wow, this one is also awesome. Thanks.
Brett and Dave: it was great meeting you guys!

Jessica, Chis, & Kelvin: it was great skiing with you again -- it's been too long.

We had a great time up at Alpental on 6/6/06.  I did my best to ski evil, but I'm not sure how well I did - until that last patch, at which point my skis were so sticky on the bottom that I could only hop miserably down the last few vertical.  Although it looked sketchy from below we actually skied most of the way down, de...
Thanks, Pete.  I got inspired by your report and spent a day last weekend putzing around that area.  Snow's definitely getting thin, but the skiing and solitude are great.  South faces are mostly gone, but north and east aspects are still pretty plump.

enjoy,

Mark
Medow,

Of course you can use it as a screen saver - anything I post is free for noncommercial use. This shot by the way is a panorama made from two 8 megapixel shots so the original is very high res. Too bad Charles limits the file size and jpg compression of pictures - my one complaint about this site. I'm working on some web pages about this spring on Pilchuck where I'll put some higher res. versions.

Every time I climb this wonderful little mountain I thank my...
Nice TR,

Bad news for me though I was hoping to skin up to Muir and boot up to the summit this Fri/Sat but they'll probably be getting new snow and at least cloudcover so things probably won't settle out on the upper mountain by then.

Anyway, great to have the current beta, thank you.  I guess I'll have to make other plans.

-Scotty
Great report, kjack.
Thanks for sharing.

I think I will short rope myself to Silas so I can keep up! Maybe it was those new Intuition liners that made him go like the energizer bunny or I am just more out of shape than I realized :-[
Thanks for the not so subtle prodding of doing the "ribbon" to down the Anette side. Something about
being a fricken idiot if I passed that up- it was totally worth it!.
JD,

Your pictures consistantly rule. Can I use this as a screen saver? Let me know.
What a great first post!!  Nicely written, informative, honest and interesting.

Keep 'em coming and thanks for sharing :)

And yes, that Cliff Mass is fun to listen to on KUOW on Fridays.  He seems like he's definitely tuned-in to the outdoor crowds interests.
That was a great day of skiing, next time I think I will short rope myself to Silas so I can keep up! Maybe it was those new Intuition liners that made him go like the energizer bunny or I am just more out of shape than I realized :-[

Thanks Jeff!
Funny--I was just looking over the guidelines and was updating my post when I saw your note--thanks for the heads up!  Will keep it to 3 in the future.  ;)
-Cheers.
Pics Added. Sorry no pics from upper coliour except from very top.
Excellent photos, great report, and welcome to the site walkingstick and mabie (I see it is your first posts here).

One of the guidelines for this site is to only include 3 photos per thread. You can put links to the rest of the photos.

Look forward to more great reports from you,

Jeff
That is one of my favorite drives down the pass.
I have often swam in the super cold American River and rested on the beaches.
Glad you topped it off with a little siesta.
Joe
Good Report-too bad about the lack of snow.

Over the top of Klahanne ridge the slope that faces North usually has snow on it this late in the year with about 900 vert. The Klahanne climb is rigorous trail 38 degree pitch 2200 vert in the sun.
I hope it was a good day none the less.
Joe
Nice report!  Here's a few photos to go along with it...
(*note: edit to take a few photos out per guidelines--sorry about that)

Working the way up:

Glacier conditions looking good:

Beautiful turns you all made on Ruth.  I was the guy who asked if those were yours right when you guys arrived at the parking lot.   That cloud formation was crazy looking!  I may have to return for 2nd's on the june turns.

...and no, I did not see the pants, by now many people probably drove over them like you drive over BBQs  ;D.

oooo, ouch, paul--you're never going to live that bbq incident down!  ;)  but i know what it's like to leave pants on top of a car after skiing, i lost a pair last year up near hart's pass.  i still think about how lonely they mu...
I don't think I ever get tired of Rainier trip reports, especially with pictures!
Looks like you guys had a good day too.  even though we didn't do a circumcision, we had fun over on the interglacier.  hey kenji, thanks for the tip on kam's photo.  yes, I had seen it although looks like it's gone now  ???
I'm an Atmos. Sci. major at UW.  Cliff taught the Atmospheric Sciences capstone that I took the final for yesterday.  He knows the weather of the Puget Sound area better than probably anyone else on the planet.  If you can think of a weather phenomenon that occurs here the chances are he wrote a paper about it.  Its fun to hear him get frustrated when the news stations are calling for hell and high water and he knows nothing is going to happen.

This forecast was absolutely dead on.  I had never heard this guy before but the person interviewing him said that he is on every Friday to give the weekend forecast.  I have never heard him but it is a great resource – way better than weather.com.  Hopefully he really is on every week.

That was Cliff Mass. He is on every week and he usually is correct. I try to...

MadDog did you get a new jacket? It sure is fancy.

Good trip, how were the north facing chutes going into the lake?

Joe

Yep, I got a new jacket, nice and bright, but don't like it, so guess what I've got a different one on order.  Love this internet shopping, it's sooooo fun  ;D.

North facing was GOOD.  Though...

My main strength in the backcountry was that I was well aware of my numerous weaknesses.

That is the best line I have heard in a long time.

Hey Paul,

Thanks for the fun photo memory!!! That sure was a beautiful day up there.

I'll definitely be hitting Muir this summer and fall-hope to see you up there sometime soon!

~Lara
Well, I *almost* met up with you guys . . . I think?
Picked up both messages on my cell phone Saturday morning, then headed over to Wild Berry's and waited there until 8:55, but no such luck.  Cruised by Longmire, but no signs of a blue Jetta.
Oh well, was a great day to be skiing pretty much anywhere with anybody!
Great to finally meet and ski with you, Jonathan, after years of electronic communication! Fun day, not as wet as it could have been, and you couldn't ask for better guides to the Tatoosh than Ron and Jeanette.
;D ;D ;D

Rob I'll be heading back to tend to some unfinished business up there.
Enum43 amazing picture!

Kinda looks like a spooky face with the clouds forming thick eyebrows.  Then again today is the day of the beast.  6-6-6

Imagine that was bryan and carol up there.  We tried Fortune and Ingalls 2 weeks ago and got caught in that sudden storm.  Never been so wet...then managed to leave my soggy pants on top of the car after changing so quickly.  You didn't find them on the road did you??  >:(

Yes, I believe it was them. They told us about your trauma from a couple of week...
Here's some pics I took from Chinook Pass, Yakima/Naches Peak area on June 3rd:

Looking back south across the road and Naches Peak

North face of Yakima Peak just north of Chinook Pass

We skied this bowl a few ridges north of the pass and a few ridges south of high cambell lift at Crystal
I believe I watched you guys traverse to Ruth and then admired your tracks later in the day-nice turns!  Glad you hit a nice weather window!

Thanks Lara.  Sorry we didn't see you at the cars and have a chance to share a beer.  Next time.  Here's a pic of you from back in Oct, I think, on Muir that I keep meaning to share.  Lara on Muir

first time i have read one of your reports and was happy i went boating
The mountains looked good over there on Saturday...and it sounds like they were as good as they looked. I wish that I could've been up there. Instead I was taking it easy on the Wenatchee. Ha, Ha. So much for that. It was seriously moving! Our raft was eaten alive in the first rapid beneath the leavenworth bridge and we swam a fair stretch before getting raked along shore. That was exciting.

I look forward to your pics. I loved that run when I skied down it a few years ag...
It was a fun contrast from the solitude of last weekend to have such a festive atmosphere in the upper basin, what with multiple sliding groups, the bushwackers setting up a big camp and then roping up for some practice, and of course the SUN coming out as the afternoon wore on. It was nice to meet a few new TAY folks, and to barely miss you CW (I assume that was you with the bullet of a dog close on your heels).

Thanks to Silas for prodding our crew to go explore what I'll call...
As we looked over toward Rainier from the ridge below Silver Peak on Saturday, Silas noticed the lenticular clouds forming and mentioned something about Lara and Eli having a great evening ahead of them...  ;)
They were REAL LONG skis. I didn't pick them up or anything (though the museum volunteer was nice enough to let me in to the display to take pictures). They were taller than arms-length above my head, and I'm 6'-3" or so. I think they were 8+ feet long.

Regarding camber, if you mean base camber, I have no idea. They probably lost whatever base camber they had ages ago. If you mean side cut, as I mentioned above, they had none or almost none. I didn't sight dow...
Good conditions Saturday.  After talking with the climber from Reno for nearly a half an hour (I was his first contact and I think he'd been waiting to vent for at least a few days) I began climbing again.  One of the other climbers came down and triggered a wet, shallow avalanche.  Given how hot it was at that point I decided skiing was not probably going to be any good and skied down to the base of the glacier.  On my way down I stopped and chatted with two of you for a minute and continu...
Nice work, you folks were hauling.  I was also up on the prow with Lightweight Dave, Russell the Muscle and Outback Jack.  You passed us as we were enjoying some Salmon pepperoni.  The Inter was in fine shape, with all sorts of fun conditions leading to cool turning techniques (hard charge, the dainty step and the telesurf all came out).  Kudos for sliding down the Inter and still having the gas For Ruth.  It was a great day to be in the mountains, especially since the weather window was short.<...

Hey Eric,

Beautiful and entertaining TR, as usual!  Yeah...a little bummed the weather crept up on us so quickly, but at least we did get in some sweet turns.  I hope this route treats us well in 2 weeks-plan on going for the summit then!  Hopefully I'll be able to get my own pack on my back without help by then!

~Lara

P.S. (Can't wait to see those pics-too bad we weren't able to get much of you, Eric!)
