Looking good, Zap! That area is steepish, too - good job climbing AND skiing it.
Nice report. Did the Birthday Tour today with Carter, Matt and Kevin. Beautiful views, mixed snow. A few pictures. http://rossmac.smugmug.com/Skiing/Birthday-Tour-June-2012/23346555_fFggWt#!i=1884651042&k=scHcTZT
Very informative: a great way to finesse the two-car issue. Wish I could follow your track tomorrow, dogs and all (I have two, too). N
you two sure get out and ski a lot! thanks for report and vid/pics.
& thanks for letting me tag along to pilchuck the other day. good times.

Nice, I have been making regular laps on bowl 4 myself, really sorry to see the snow go on the lower mountain, but I'm with you, the skiing on the upper reaches of the mountain are still great. Went to Washington pass yesterday, drizzled on us, and the snow was soft, but had a good time
Vince, nice to run into you again, I had a look at your picture, there are some I really enjoy. Hope you had a good tour. We skied spire gully, and it was good, but we were just a little late, and it was a little mushy.

Also note -- I investigated the Cold Creek road (9070) and found it blocked by a snow drift just past the MIll Creek bridge at 2400ft. I think 4wd pickup truck with 30 inch tires could probably power through, but I didn't even try with my dinky little Honda CRV.
You won't make it much past that

Glad to see you are still getting out! Thought you might have hung up your skis after the garden started to grow..... ;)
Gary
Quite the opposite. Here I am after a little bit of spinach ;)
The conditions were so so with all the recent new snow...
So we had to get creative :)

Great photo, joke. I love that kind of stuff!
there is usually not enough room for the dynafit heel in between your stance.
although if you moved your touring point up an inch and rode a 23+ inch stance and had low tech race binding it could work...

Sorry I am not sure about the moraine campsite.... Where are they located ?
the 'bumps' beyond the skier in the last pic..
Looks like you guys had awesome conditions there...Wish I had a dose of that.
Good on ya two!

Awesome trip! Very inspiring. Thanks for sharing.
How long is your streak for "First Trip Report of the Month"? 8)
So do you have both the dynafit toe and heel pieces on the split, in addition to the hard plate bindings? In theory could lock the heel and 'ski', for those pesky annoying ups and downs the barely (or don't at all) warrant a full transition? What about the weight - equal to or lighter than normal split setup ?
I was thinking of trying a setup like your picture b/c I already have the boots.

All cars were parked before the second last switchback, and they followed the rest of the road and the summer trail leaving ski/boot tracks behind. We took off from the last switchback. By now, I expect you can drive almost all the way to the TH. Have fun!
Were those three other cars parked at the west ridge or within shot of the summer trail? Just trying to get an indication if the summer trail has any kind of boot path to follow.
Very inspiring. Thanks for the excellant report!
Your feet will fit in there fine once you lose some toe nails.

Two weeks ago there was enough snow to doubtful lake.
Sorry I am not sure about the moraine campsite.... Where are they located ?
About 800-1000vt ft below the Summit on the relatively flat section near the top of the Sahale Arm.

it was my first time at white river CG and i did not expect to boot so far to reach the snow.
Ouch! My toes hurt just thinking about this!
I bet you could skin without skins in the dark with those new boots though.

Thanks! Been wondering about that road.
Nice! Thanks for the TR.
yeah, the boots take some getting used to! i find a little pre-emptive Vitamin I(buprofen) helps. or Vitamin B(eer). I put a beefy skiing insole in my boots because my feet were pronating too much, which made things even worse. That helps a little (and keeps my feet warmer). I also learned the hard way that I didn't need as much sock in a ski boot... and to check that I was NOT in downhill mode. Only took a couple thousand uphill vert to realize the source of pain. ouch. never was one for l...
Doesn't appear that the moraine campsites are open yet...
looks like you escaped the rain that fell on me most of the afternoon out by rainier!
Thanks for the photo.
Went up in that area last year, so much stuff to keep me interested for a while.

Yes congrats. I've still got a way to go to get to 100 if I count honest and have a 2-month streak break from the miserable late summer/fall 2005.
Two tips for you:
1) Next time you make that 'mistake' of overshooting the Granite turn by a mile - just go straight uphill. It'll take you pretty naturally into the Granite/W Granite bowl, and it's a far more pleasant climb that way. Better gradient for skinning, less av exposure, no people, and you get a nice look...

One of my favs, still skiable to Doubtful lake no doubt?
Thanks Jeff - we both thought it was a very direct and enjoyable route in, but it probably has a relatively short window of opportunity.
stunning scenery ... awesome trip ... great photos!

The dog appears to be a great ski dog... seemed to be mightful of staying clear of moving skis.
Ski dogs dont get much better than her :) Stays away from moving skis, has the heart to keep pluggin when she is tired. Stays close by. Tries to crawl into your sleeping bag at night, but you cant blame her there. I was kind of worried the last li...
Nice report, Pierce, and a nice way to manage the trip on that route.
