Do you have any sense of how long the season will last for skiing Adams given the current snowpack?  Is it still worthwhile/feasible at the end of July to do a trip up to the summit on skis or is it too melted out at that point?

Great pictures! Thanks for sharing!
sweet .. but i know you gotta get back there next year  ;-)

looks to me like they could open the road to sunrise .... how cool to have it all to yourself though
So why the week delay in opening the road to Sunrise?  It looks like the road and lot are plowed out.

Nice trip Kyle.
Great trip Kyle! Way to find some adventure with a marginal forecast.
Put on your damn pants and shirt, Silas.  Sheez
That was a Rockin' traverse, Kyle.
Thanks for the report; and especially for the pics of the great coverage at Sunrise.
Thought that picture looked familiar.
Too bad about the chute. I thought it would hold longer than that.
But what a bugger to get around if it does not go!! Not a lot of options!
Nice to hear that the road has finally melted to Fawn, for the biking.
It's really a cool traverse for the views isn't it! Whole different perspective of the mountain range.

Also FWIW we only went from Buck Creek to Dege and down to the WRCG. Where you did the WHOLE mapped traver...

Did you get the big chute (one way out) on the North side of Pallisade that goes all the way down to lower Pallisade lake?
Hard core in the rain, extra points.
Where did Boot pick you up? Did you go out Dollar?

That chute was the focus of my trip and I got to it but sadly it was melted out alreay and caused quite the fiasco to get around. Boot met me...
Nice Kyle...finally you got to do the route. Interesting that you did it the opposite way that we did it a couple years ago. It would be interesting to compare vertical going the other way. Also, did you get the big chute (one way out) on the North side of Pallisade that goes all the way down to lower Pallisade lake?

nice!  sounds like a fun trip; glad the lookout wasn't locked!

that palisades line looks more like a rock climb than a ski descent... i bet it would be fun if you could get back there in the right mid winter conditions.
Thanks for the location note Steve.  I've put that on my map.  I'd never skied up there before and was wondering on the location.

I thought about the possibility of the bait station being for wolverines.  It wasn't high off the ground, maybe 4 ft and the branch being used as a perch was pretty thick and burly.  Wish I'd taken a picture of it for everyone.
Thanks!  The devil club shoots was Scott's beta. We tried several shoots in various stages of bloom, and concluded that the tastiest ones still had the purple shell around the green buds. The older shoots without the shell were still edible but quite bitter.

I think they do beat the glacier lilies out of the snowpack.
Nice way to get it, even in marginal weather.

No idea what years may be represented in the Rusk Glacier cross-section. I believe that this section of glacier is below the firn line, meaning that it melts down to bare ice in summer. It is fed by avalanches from the upper cliffs around Victory Ridge, I think. One thing that's not obvious from the picture is that the ice is flowing toward the camera as much as it's flowing to...
Strong work guys!!!!
Such an amazing area.

shot five is definitely magical - yay to the pioneering spirit!  cool trip.

so do devil club shoots beat glacier lilies out of the snow pack?
Well, hell yeah!  It set up for good corn on Big Sister...
great snow, sunny weather and a fun time.  A little late but here are some pics plus a link to video of Silas skiing it up (https://vimeo.com/44214555).  Bad video quality due to my bad skills and equipment - I think I need to get some advice from 'freebird' on how to make good videos...

Hey guys... I talked to a biologist at cle elum ranger station about the wolverine we saw. I told him where we saw it and asked if he was going to have a look. He said "well, I don't think I can get my skinning gear together today, but I'll be up there first thing tomorrow morning." man... What a cool job! Cool place
The selection of route: Whimsy?  Or take a look at the picture labeled Low Emmons.

Thanks for the intel.  I am planning on heading up there Thursday.
Awesome! Looks like a beautiful spot. Sketchy log!

You can eat them?!?! A scourge's silver lining! Stab if you must, O. horridus; we'll devour your children.

shot number five is great.
big day.
Nice,

I'm suffering from bushwack envy :)
While I have the pics out, here's a shot of the north bowl.
Hard to say how long McL will be skiable this year. From the ridge line the south face actually looked pretty good and I'd expect that to turn to before the N and NE bowls for obvious reasons, but that was over a week ago now. At a minimum, I'd think there'd be something to ski by the end of the month, but weather will determine if it's worth your while.  Maybe keep an eye on the snotels down there (http://www.or.nrcs.usda.gov/snow/maps/oregon_sitemap.html)...?

Thanks for the schooling on stiction. Who knew? Love the pictures especially crossing the Rusk. It looks like a metamorphic rock outcrop. Which essentially it is.

Out of curiosity, did anyone use kick wax or fish scales on the traverse?

David was on light telemark skis with fish scales. I was on light AT skis that hadn't been waxed for a while. David could definitely climb better, but I could climb pretty well too.

This saved much time and energy on the latter part of the trip. As I mentioned in...
Fortune Peak is Pt. 7382 on the map.

Interesting re the wildlife cam and bacon.  Looking for the wolverine that Anita, Randy and I spotted last week?

Lovely place, one of my favorite spring skiing areas.  FWIW, there are easier skinning routes to Fortune.
Lowell,

I have an Adams trip planned in two weeks, so thank you for whetting my whistle.  I especially appreciate the Fuki-esque photo of Mt. Hood with clouds.  Out of curiosity, did anyone use kick wax or fish scales on the traverse?
Wow, great pics and looked like a really fun time.

Nice. Curious why you prefer the route of up the Glacier Basin trail and across the Emmons base and toe of Goat Island, as opposed to going via Summerland, especially since I thought you scouted that there was still a fair bit snow under the trees 2 weeks ago up Summerland trail that could potentially still speed up the deproach?

Aesthetic decision for the wildness? Gives you better...
I think we saw you sitting on the glacier when we were on top.  We must have been a little behind you coming down and had almost perfect visibility with a few short waits for clearing.  We missed out on mosquitos and had almost continuous sun coming from the Emmons side.  Nice day up there after driving through the downpour in Greenwater.
Thanks for a wonderful day, Jessie! And for the record, I didn't get bitten at all! :)

I like your pictures.
Bruno must have been full of berries  ;)
Thanks for the TR and pictures.

Your style of mountain travel on ski has always motivated and inspired me since seeing the Cascade Crest slideshow at Marmot a few years back; using the ski as an alpine tool, and sometimes touring for the tour and not just the turn has made my life much richer.

I hope to move through the mountains with you some day.

Cheers!
Nice.  Where you at there?
Great report/photos! Love PNW spring skiing.

So, what is the proper ski etiquette when a chute like Ellinor is swarmed with ascending climbers?  Does the ascending climber have the right of way?  Should I feel bad for wiping out parts of their boot pack

My solution to this is to not ski the "winter" bootpack chute. There is a cirque or bowl to the north of the winter bootpack chute that is a better...
Better late than never! Here is a video from the dayTamars birthday tour
Nice Peggie.  I will have to look into this Gravity Bowl next year.  So, what is the proper ski etiquette when a chute like Ellinor is swarmed with ascending climbers?  Does the ascending climber have the right of way?  Should I feel bad for wiping out parts of their boot pack :-[ (though I helped make them)?  Thanks.
Ski-assisted rock climbing. That's hard core. Congrats on your summit!

Any idea how many years of snow accumulation are represented in that cross section of glacier? Is the Mt. St. Helens eruption represented in one of the dark layers?

Really interesting to see how the glacier rides over the rock bump on the left. The ice seems to be broken up a bit uphill from the bump, and well consolidated downhill. Counterintuitive to my thinking. But maybe I am r...
Impressive trip, Andrew.
I'm happy for the exploders that they have been reborn from the "retired" bin and get to see some new ground. ;)
Nice Lowell and David. That's a spectacular adventure with tons of views. The Klickitat and Wilson Glaciers are amazing to see, too.

There's a ton of snow left up there! Wow.
