Quite a bit less snow and buffed up a bit then Ive seen it . Still a great place to be.
Lots left up here in  PNW
Try to limit it to no more than a carfull  ;)
the volcanoes never make it easy unless they want too. you got baptized buddy from the precip. above and the frozen below. good thing you got some clearing early so you could see the view of the cascades.
holler when you get back

Mosquitos were not too bad.  But there's plenty of standing water so I'd suspect they'll become a problem once the temps start rising... but I'm no mosquito specialist.

Nice! Thanks for the TR! Looks like you hit it at a good time. Great shot of the turns off of Steamboat Prow!!  Was hoping to see recent beta on conditions, as I am doing the Interglacier/Emmons Route as soon as we get a good weather window.  How far was walk mode before skinning? Maybe 2-3 miles?

Ditto. Headed for the summit this weekend. Thanks for the report.
I was out that way Sunday. Continuous snow on the trail from the upper (closed) lot. Watch out for dog poop the first hundred yards. Plenty of snow in the basin.

I was wondering the same thing, Amar : )
Nice, Carl!

FYI, to other would-be road trippers: Lassen is closed for the season, unfortunately, as of yesterday.
We had a nice couple of laps up there Saturday, too.

Really felt like a sunny day in February... beautiful powder : )

Too bad Amar, Dave B, and I didn't run into you & Zach.
Thanks for the detailed report. Almost skied McLoughlin yesterday on the way back to Seattle from Shasta, but opted for several short easy roadside laps at Crater Lake instead (Hillman Peak and The Watchman, very nice corn on those NNW aspects from noon to 2pm).

How bad were the mosquitoes on McLoughlin?

I would say it's possible to switch about 1/2 way up (less than 2 miles)?

I had tennies which I appreciated, plus the new trail is really nice for walking.
anyone gone out towards source lake/pineapple/the tooth recently/?
Great post, thanks for the report and pics; maybe I'll try again Real Soon Now.

On the babies: true dat.
Thanks for the report, I'm thinking of heading down there in a week.
Don't give up on the trailer just yet, it's not very time consuming if you have something bigger than a Subaru...  Also, it can be a fun afternoon project turning an old kid trailer into a gear trailer.

(not from a ski trip, just a bike camping trip)
Thanks for the map, Joke. We did our bushwhacking pretty early, so not too steep. I like that Grouse creek route - if you ascend during the traverse you can get straight up to the black buttes.

Also fyi the bridge on the standard trail is out, but the crossing there wasnt bad.
Hey freightrainer - thanks for the nice photo of us in pic #3.....ditto your comments re the snow on the dash down!!
You guys lose a hat?  I am one of the 5 seattleites, and picked it up.
Great video ..I got up late on Sat but still  had great snow (unfornately snowmobiles had trashed cows face).

Back up on Sun for some good goop from summit  to bottom of rainbow (at the bottom, 'bilers road in and flipped me off before commencing to trash the slope...).
Way to get back there in and out of the Methow. Nice 3+ day getaway but too bad about the end thrash. Great pics on Flickr Susan. Any hermits living in the mine lodging?

Nice, skied it last month. Sounds like the bergshund wasn't as bad as it looks from above.

Two points.

1) There have already been numerous discussions about this, and the community has agreed that this topic does not belong on trip reports about climbing/skiing Mt. Baker.

2) Snowmobiling is legal on the south side.  If you don't like that, I suggest you climb and ski something else.

Please rant about snowmobiling in the random tracks section.
author=peggieh link=topic=25091.msg105953#msg105953 date=1339613902]1.) WHAT? "the community" agrees?!?? Was there a vote? Nobody asked me or anyone I know. Or are you talking about the bile community?

2.) So if murder was legal on the south side I should just go somewhere else? No thats not how it works.

Just because its legal doesn't mean its right.

*on preview, thanks Pete*

Peggieh, perhaps you missed the threads regarding Baker last month as you might be new to the TAY forum.

very lengthly discussion about Baker and snowmobiles in 'random tracks':

Thanks for the conditions report - it looks like it was pretty nice up there above the clouds.

Three of us set out on saturday morning, taking the standard heliotrope ridge trail from the TH. Before long, we realized it wasn't going to link up with the winter route (the one that starts behind the outhouse) so we bushwhacked to change course.

Did you see any bilers? Its always an annoyance to see snowmobiles raping the mountain after you've worked so hard to get somewhere where you were expecting peace, quiet, and solitude.

Wow, what a difference a day makes. We were up there Sunday and couldnt see 10' ahead and the snow was super manky. Made it to 6000' and never saw Sahale. Nice work.
Here is our pictures: https://plus.google.com/photos/101233243950396194715/albums/5753020110476468209?authkey=CPWDnvm6m6Xo0wE
Get some t money and crew!

Jeff's skiing them long these days eh?
Score! Looks like it's time to head that direction.
1) It was awsome to see you both  up there.
2) looks like we both missed Silas.
3) That line on Zap's peak was cool. All the times ive skied it Ive never thought about that line having gone further east around the ridge.
4) contented my self with our meeting ,sun ,lunch ,a good book and a snooze before riding home. Of course not without a stop at Wapiti Woolies for a ice cream .
great video and looks like a great day.  thanks for posting

Yo PowderT, mind if I send this shot to WDFW? Send me a PM with your name and I can give you credit. They're after any and all pictures we took and yours is a good one.
Hey, I was there too ya know ;)  Granted, my slow arse missed actual sighting and I only saw tracks.

Great ski tour, funky snow conditions from the ridge to bench.  Sorta opposite of "regular conditions".  Flatten the ski to slow down, carve/skid a turn to speed up, odd....

At under 5 hours car to car, that was haulin'!

Awesome sighting!  Wolverines are so cool.  I'm glad you let the wildlife guys know, they'll be interested.  (I used to do wildlife surveys for the FS.)  I've only seen one in my life and it was on a ski trip too.

Cheers, David.
Good to hear from you, Travis.  I'll send you a PM.

Randy reported the wolverine sighting to WDFW.  We are in touch with the wolverine expert.

Very true! Carrying beer is good for weight training. Make strong legs and back.
What a fun loop. If the Mill Creek trail actually existed, I'd recommend it to friends who don't mind carrying skis long distances. But, the Mill Creek trail isn't really there. Set expectations to "Alaskan Bush", and you'll have fun. Trail would be invisible with more than 1 inch of snowcover. In many sections, a divining rod would be handy, except that it would get hung up in the brush. The trail and mine areas are Federally closed for the min...
oops. i swear beer and/or herbs had nothing to do with me putting all of that in quotes!

You don't have to worry about hitting a tree or something like you would if you were drunk.

I have seen some immoderate herbivores skiing/riding who were crashing into stuff, eating it in deep pow, and getting lost in trees... but you're point is still a good one ;)

however, liquid refreshments (unlike herbs) do have a calorie content! and it...
It wasn't exactly a straight line ...

Glad you guys made it up there and took advantage of the opportunity, I was stuck admiring the view from Olympia that day.  Was the snow pack on the winter route up (S facing) still decent enough to ski at this point, or did you only ski the N facing area?

Plenty of snow still up high! Its all skiable right down into the woods.
Susan,  Great photos of the trip.
