author=snoholic link=topic=25184.msg106373#msg106373 date=1340342056] Great ski down in the dark with Silas hootin and hollering all the way to the car.

Bummed we had to skidaddle before the dogs were done. Susan wound up working way into the early morning.

"Hey Silas - you got a headlamp?

No... do I need one?"

Apparently not! :)!

After viewing the Garibaldi complex so many times on the way to Whistler, it was really cool to explore the mountain.  Seems that this June has been especially wet and cold, and clearly there was  new snow in the alpine.  The schrund was open across the face, and it wasn't safe to make an end run.  But great company and scenery and it's always fun to explore new places.
Hmm, I didn't take any pics of the snow coverage around Cascade Pass, or near the road, sorry.

How come I am always in the same place as Silas but I never see him?

Nice!  Saw your tracks and wondered who did it.  Fun video!
Festive evening for sure, we had a few people show up a couple miles away.

Funny.  I only ever make it out a couple times a year (maybe) and I always seem to bump into him.  I just assume that he is everywhere.

Thanks for the access update. Photos?
Good job on bagging St Helens!!! Stellar trip you have going, Michael! From kayaking with Orcas, to the San Juan's, to Rainier and Helens, you are truly getting some of the best of what we have to offer in the Great Northwest! Smooth sailing, to you and Christian, my friend! Will have to come ski some of your sick terrain in the Alps! Take care, and go git' it!!!
Wow! Love that third shot! That is about the best BBQ shot, with beverage, I have ever seen! Kudos to you!!!  :D
Wolfs, I was thinking the same thing.  Last year I remember more snow  on  the west side, but thinner snow on the main east facing bowl.  This year  just the opposite.
I was up there in the evening. Several other parties about. Nice consistency corn. Still nice day but interesting clouds building west and south as sun set.
What I haven't seen mentioned in any of the Silver reports thus far is that the slopes down to Annette are already BAKED. 90% talus. Definitely no continuous way to get from ridge to anything more than few hundred feet long. Kind of odd because last year they lasted long enough to be really fun at the time the road was open and for...
Happy belated Lee !  Just back from Garibaldi - nice tour, 3' pole penetration 300' below summit, baled.
Hi Splitboard Graham, hi bcjunkie,

nice trip report and pics. It was a pleasure to be on a trip with you!!!

I do ski mountaineering since quite a few years now, but from you I learned something on skins. It was also very interesting to see the differences in the way the gear used for a particular use case  between US and Europe style.

I will provide some more pics as soon as I get them from my SD card.

Thanks for that trip report Lowell I enjoyed it so much.  I was actually directed to it from an interminable, but very enjoyable thread on Ttips, on XCD technique.  Some of the views you showed reminded me of my two visits to Mount Adams with telemon.  Bob is sorely missed.....
Here's a picture of the highlight of the day for me.

Weaver (Paul) and I met this nice young couple as they were coming down off Silver Peak.
Thanks for posting that photo Mike! Nice meeting you as well.
Great day to be up there.  It was my first visit to Silver Peak, and I went with Wook.  We were both on splitties, and made a hike up to the summit.  I got some decent footage, I think; will post later today or tomorrow.

NOOOO! not again!

oh, whew! close one.

Yes V, I hate close calls like that.
Hell yeah!  That's a feel-good TR!  Sounds like a trip of a lifetime.  Good work, fellers!
Shot up there after work with Alta Snob for a summit and twilight ski out.  Still laughing about Silas's verbal ques regarding skiing in the dark; I'm glad to know I'm not the only loon-bin on the hills. Good times.

oh, whew! close one.

looks like a great trip! :)
Wow! You guys sure nailed the timing of that trip. Great shots
Had a killer time out yesterday. Didn't get to meet anyone but there were quite a few folks up in the bowl. I ended up putting in two laps up to the true summit then descended off the east ridge via a nice steep little col.

Did you need permits,

Yes, permits required.  I picked the dates in February for the lottery process and it turns out I picked poorly as far as coordinating with my wife.  Worked out okay for skiing though :)

Hey Mike, I wondered if you posted...
Which boots are you using with your TTS binding?  Are those the scarp a F1's?  Also, what cable system did you use?  I'd like to build a TTS with the O1 cables underfoot.

Inspiring report.  I was actually up there June 14-15 on a hike with my wife, no skis, but I saw ski tracks and was wishing.

If you ever need someone to tele with... I'm new to the area, looking for people to ski with.  Send me a PM.
YES
I knew you were a genius......I'll stand behind you the 1st time!
Bear Tipping, Jake.
Hey Mike, I wondered if you posted over here. You guys sure did seem to be having an awesome time up there. I really enjoyed watching you guys ski down Aasgard. Now I am seriously regretting leaving early.

Thanks!  The devil club shoots was Scott's beta. We tried several shoots in various stages of bloom, and concluded that the tastiest ones still had the purple shell around the green buds. The older shoots without the shell were still edible but quite bitter.

Damn I am chuckling; now not only do we have to aim to ski the most rad line, as far away as possible....b...
Bummed we missed you guys - last dash in the evening. Beautiful day!
That was a blast. Great party at the top - nice to meet you all! The evening skiing was quite nice - carvable corn.
Fun up there.  Glad to hear you got out.  Via headlamp?
Yeah baby!  Happy Solstice.  Sorry we missed you two.  We had brews with RustyKnees and Weaver at the cars, then skinned up to the ridge for more beers with Silas, Jim O, et. al.  Lovely up there.

Keep on zapping it, Zap!
Nice pics.  Those look like bear prints in the snow. Do we need to bring bear spray on our belts?
Great trip report, Mike! Did you need permits, or does that start later? Great pictures, boy,did you get the weather!
Thanks, Graham! Also! Here is 3 more pics that gotta be shown...

1)Graham, Mr. kitted-out and ready for action, tearing up the crazy debris on the way up Interglacier...
2)Me, newby and all, ready for action on summit morning...
3)Splitboard Graham tearing it up in good fashion
nice work. been eyeing that from crystal for years, too.
You are both awesome and inspiring.
Determination! Inspiring. Thank you.
Thanks for the pics bcjunkie! and the good company to all in attendance!

below are some more pics:

And finally, 3 more for the road...  ;)

1) Michael and Christian skiing the Upper Interglacier Basin
2)Michael and Paul skiing the Lower Interglacier Basin
3) I scared our poor little bear up a tree, on the way down the trail...didn't even notice until Michael told me as he was catching up to me...must have been the huge pack with skis on it.

As this was my first time on Mt. Rainier, I am awed and inspired! I will be back to try it again....soon! Thank...
And in addition to...here are some more pictures for your viewing pleasure:

1)Skiing the Emmons Glacier
2)More skiing on the mighty Emmons Glacier
3)Last but not least, more skiing on the Emmons Glacier

The snow conditions were a bit icy and crusty, but was pretty skiable with some serious power turns and a good attitude  :)
They just keep a coming....more pictures  :D

1)View looking over at the Emmons Glacier, Frying Pan Glacier, and the Cowlitz Chimneys in the early AM, on summit day.
2) Right before we embarked on our skin up, the winds up on Mt. Rainier started to pick up dramatically.
3) Near the crux of the route, with a falling serac blowing out a snow bridge, critical to our attempt on skis,  just ahead...
Here are some more pictures from the trip:

1)Our group skiing into the Upper Interglacier Basin.
2)Our camp at Camp Shurman.
3)Looking up the Emmons Glacier in the early AM before our attempt to summit.
I figured I better add to the trip report, as it is my first here on TAY. Here are some pictures from the trip:

1) Looking at Mt. Rainier's Emmons/Interglacier route from the highway the day before we embarked.
2)Our group getting ready to hit the trail from the White River Trailhead.
3) Not even a mile up the trail, we had company...a black bear! Right in the middle of the trail!! Fortunately, he didn't seem to mind us one bit....

Good effort.  We watched the weather over the Rainier summit from Fryingpan Glacier and it had a big cloud most of the day.  I wonder whether any climbers were getting through after the bridge collapse as I am planning to go up there in a month or so (on foot, not skis).

Thanks for any info.

Thanks. No one summitted while we were up there. The g...
