thanks... appears like there are two planes... 22' and 28'. While I sometimes get frustrated there are so many planes / satellites in these kind of images... sometimes they help make the shot...
Beautiful Erik! What was the streak at 28 secs - satellite, air plane or shooting star? Great photos. Thank you.
From what we saw around there it wasn't getting cold enough at night to freeze very well. On Saturday on the way in at 10AM we were already fighting lots of heavy gloppy stuff on our skis (didn't think to bring wax....). But on Sunday at 9 or so parts of the skin track on the east side of Table was quite icy... guessing it just didn't freeze very deep so it goes from corn to mush real quick?
Good show. A good example of the axiom "There are only two types of snow: good snow or a bad attitude".
Many a trip to the White Mountains of New Hampshire ended up like your trip - you made the effort to get to the "skiing", might as well go through with it...I can remember being completely gripped from top to bottom on the Hillmans Highway - delightful skiing when good snow - absolutely terrifying with boilerplate!

i was in one of the "offending" parties that was skinning up the north facing runs off of table, but i'd like to give our perspective. we were a group from vancouver that is moderately familiar with the bagley bowl area but found that the early season conditions made things a lot less familiar. we initially did take the proper route and skinned up the resort cat track to artist point and then dropped into the north facing stuff from the top but we found that the relati...
How was the snow on south facing slopes? Corning up?
Great choice...amazing photos of the waterfall rainbow.
I didn't take many pictures, but Amar did. Is there something you were looking for?
Yeah, we made it to the top of the dome/lower summit.

RSLG here is some detailed kootenay pass info poached from the acmg mcr reports
"
Just back from trip to Kootenay Pass. Here are a few observations from the day.
The storm from earlier in the week changed things a bit. The coverage is better, though still nowhere at the mid-winter levels. Be careful on wind-swept rides and lower elevations, the rock are still there. As well, at lower elevations there is now a crust on or near the surface. Depending on the el...

Sweet! Did you tag the summit? It was looking pretty gnarly to cross the glacier back in early november.
Hey, thanks for the Kootenay info.. Sounds really cool up there on Video! Cools pictures too--THANKS!
I rolled through kootenay pass on tuesday night. I know people were skiing the hill at whitewater wednesday morning which is similar elevation. Maybe 60 to 80cms would be my guess. I was gonna hunt around but it was nasty so I kept driving. I think it is good to go though.
Now it is probably messed up with the warming. Best to just check the web cam and see if people are out skiing that is normally a good indicator.

Any idea/quality of Kootenay Pass snow depths, overall...?
Yeah - the 4wd club is always up there a couple times this time of year. I think it's pretty cool to see them make it all the way up there. I've seen them do it in quite a bit deeper snow too. They always pass you, and then you always pass them.
nice pano. twin lakes is a popular snow wheeling spot for the jeepers early season. another dump and it will be too deep for them fyi. Nothing wrong with having a little fun 4wheel style imo.

Have they given up the idea of closing the downhill gate at 5pm? See a lot of cars in the lot still at 5:00 Anyone know what's up?
Boot, IIRC & IMN, the 5 p.m. closure goes along with a 7-day/week opening which begins after 21 December; we are still in the 2-day/week closure period. The overall rule remains "pay your money and take your chances...
how very euro. I hope someone followed your tracks.....
Thanks Drew and Jesse for an incredibly gorgeous hike, great humor and a reason to put the spikes on and enjoy winter...your humility allowed us to occasionally use the adverb 'terrifying' with comfort and ease...let's hope after this high pressure, the next storm comes in wet!
Same in the Sierras. We just got 8 " , and it blew away with some NE gusts. Manmade at resorts is o k.

Hi Troy,
Thanks for the report and pic's. The slides in your photos sure look like wet slides from the rain event and resultant avy cycle. Note the fresh snow on top as the storm cooled off towards its tail end.
CJ couloir looks good up top but could use a bit more snow down low!

Nice pics Troy - I pasted in the images below using the "IMG" tag that's available in the posting page.

The road doesn't open before 9 in the winter ....thats how it is
We're heading up tomorrow and I'm wondering about the road. I've heard it doesn't open until 9am. Is this true?
Cheers!

Hopefully this will work. Let me know via PM if not and I'll try another way.

thanks. would it be worth it to skin up or walk tomorrow?
If you had a low profile pack and expert avy skills, a direct route to Cascade Pass might be fun. Expect some brush hassle.
Please stay away from the summer trail. Scary!
As you probably know, the views are amazing. Almost worth it just for the scenery (but not quite).

Ditto on Pete H's question. Also, did you encounter breakable crust on sun exposed slopes?
Thanks for the Beta
The avy danger I saw close up was on the summer trail. If you had a small pack (I had my huge overnight pack) then maybe weaving through the brush would still make for a great trip. I planned on the direct route to the pass, digging pits as I w...

how far after the gate did you hit snow?
I skinned from the car. Parked at the gate. However, snow was so thin that I kept my skins on for the descent. A turn would have sent sparks flying, especially near the gate.
This would be a prime location to do something like they have in Smithers

They have cut runs plus they secured funding to get it plowed. It would take a dedicated group to get it done but it could be a big boost to the local area!

That could and may be the first ski decent of the parking lot picnic table?!
The coverage on that table was better than in many of our local resorts at the moment so it was hard to resist :)
Anyone knows the contact for the Guinness Book of World Records?
Thanks for the report! That could and may be the first ski decent of the parking lot picnic table?! Have you checked Skoog's site? I am thinking you get to claim it! :)
Great touring with you! Couple things to add: we saw only two other cars and no people all day, lots of untracked terrain all around, and I'm pretty sure our turns were more enjoyable here than they would have been closer to home!
Great pictures, Pavel. Especially the last one hucking huge that big obstacle. Sorry I missed the day.
And I thought we had it funky being the likely first errant team down that thing last November.
Interesting how obstacles reveal themselves early season: that 'schrund, and giant shark-fin boulder that gets entirely covered pretty quickly. You probably boosted a stunt off it, eh?
Thanks for the info.

Sounds as though you got to ski in typical East Coast conditions. With some more practice you'll be ready for a trip to steep rinks of the Northeast!
Of course there are a number of us that left there for deeper pastures...
Good Work!!!

Definitely sounds like a double black diamond!
Sounds like a "wonderful" time. I was afraid of all the rain and the cold temperatures afterwards. Danger lurks everywhere!
Ahhh, frickin' rad!! Although I'm sorry to hear about that silly snow thwarting your climbing plans. Sweet ride, too. :)
