Thanks Ed for joining me!  Here are a few pictures.   The day was amazingly fun.  I thoroughly enjoyed exploring terrain I've never been in.

And here's a link to the rest of the images and 2 short videos that show some sweet tele turns from sun-up to sun-down

Hey John,

Did you really ask this of scott... "Did you have to navigate by headlamp at all?"
Nice day out Scott! Did you have to navigate by headlamp at all? Just wondering...
No problem, I think getting to the th is the crux. Blanca lake th.

Hwy2, to just east of skykomish. Turn left on beckler river rd.  Stay on this until jack pass.
At the pass 5 roads join. You want the one to the left that goes down hill. At the bottum you cross the north fork skykomish, and then take the first right turn (63)? 2 OR 3 more miles from here. Staying on the left road at any forks. 22 miles from hwy 2 in Total?

From the th, follow the summer trail(or...
Hey, Thanks for the update and pictures.  Definitely beautiful.  Dry as a bone.
Mr. Capone:

Can you give me a better idea of where you went? I'd love to know of another tour route! I'm familiar with the Monte Cristo Area, but not well enough to understand where you went.

Thanks for the report!
Nice one trees.

Got a good view of this yersterday. Looks awesome.
Excellent Don!  It's good to know Scottish Lakes HC is gearing up for the season.
This sounds like a fun loop - thanks for posting (bookmarking this one for sure ;- ) We toured at Crystal on Saturday and I concur - it skied a lot better than expected, at least based on how poorly things look like at the parking lot.
Thanks for the update.  That doesn't sound too bad given the snowpack.  Keep doing those snow dances...

I wasn't referring directly to your post cascade kid, but to the general mt. Hood bc community. People seem very pessimistic this year, when it has actually been pretty good.

But this does bring up some stuff that has bothered me recently. I feel as if the sensationalism of bc travel has got people scared beyond reason. There is always a safer route down the mountain. This is why I chose pearly gates rather than the old chute. Old chute was very wind loaded, to the point I didn&...

Early season obstacles? That looks like wolverine damage to me.

Actually, it was yetti but I didn't want to risk being proclaimed a lunatic and thus ostracized from the TAY community :)

We were snookered too. Dug a pit to the ground instead. Details to follow if we get them organized fast enough. Only surprise was  6cm 4F rounding sugar sandwiched between two crusts about a meter down. Total snowpack 2.05m in a windloaded spot just N of Alta Vista overlooking Edith Creek Basin. Beautiful morning.

A snowshoer and a skier took separate long sliding falls on the crust, one losing a ski that traveled from Pan Point all the way down to at least the top of the watercourse...
Snow stability is not an exact science so I don't take any one person's take as to what the actual stability is when get there.  I do consider what others are "observing" for sure though and so consider it in my decision making..

STAY SAFE OUT THERE!
Misleading?  Wow!?  The temperature went up 10 degrees from the 10th to the 11th.  But your right I guess that had nothing to do with it and CB must have got it completely wrong.  Good on you for being there at the right time and thank you for the report and great picks.
Thanks for your report--seems like it has been a few weeks since seeing a report from--always great stuff--keep'em coming!
I had convinced myself that it was going to be good as well.  Like the OP said... huge mistake.
Nope...not what I dreamt of skiing last night.
Some of the worst breakable crust I've encountered; we joing the throng fleeing before lunch.
My earlier reports. ;) I opted out of steeper SE facing terrain like the white river head wall out of concern for unmanageable windslab.  I offer no misleading information I hope-- I try to be specific about where I went and what I saw.  Glad you had a good day of skiing and no issues.
made on "attempt" to ski off the NE side of the ridge, but it yielded semi breakable wind crust to wind board for the first 200 ft.  Once down in the trees, it was a little better, but the top was, well....aweful.  Needs snow!
This Ryan Irvin character deserves a gold medal in monochrome.  (I guess that would be silver then.....)

I admire your enthusiasm and I'm loving the crash gif, classic!
Did you drop into any north-facing slopes? I'd be surprised if it was so crusty and bad on those aspects.
Love this trip report - definitely a hardy group here trying to sniff it out!  Thanks for the stoke.
We found similar conditions Sunday, with more great weather. Such a cool area up there. Enjoyed your skintrack on the way up to the ridge, thanks Erik!
No worries about the car this time, we were the only tracks in/out of the parking lot.  On our way in we did have to clear a 60' alder that had come down blocking the road.  Someone had already cut it (??), so it was an easy lift and drag op to get the blood flowing in the predawn.

IMO, the real problem with touring the mountain loop is the lack of data.  It's about 75 miles between Stevens pass and the elbow lake (s.side of mt baker) snotel site. ...
Can't get video to play--sounds like a good adventure...

I have no idea why no one goes there (other than the cliffs and almost 4000' boot through the frozen forest right now).

That area is truly remote and beautiful. Not to mention it has a reputation for your car getting shot or stolen while you are gone. I was surprised that mine stuck around for a week when I went off to Glacier Peak.
Thanks for the report and observations--pray for snow!!!

thanks for opening my eyes to a new line! (i had to check out your old TR to get the details).

what's that steep gully-strewn face shown in the still at 1:11?  is that the ridge between red and black mt?

the down-shwacking video made me laugh.  i was wishing i had a helmet cam to capture the magic when i was doing the same thing on sunday.

nice!

I woulda much rather been doing that, than cleaning and unpacking...

That looks sooooo fun!  What an amazing place.  Perfect clear and cold weather.  Best in the north cascades!  Nice pictures and great write up  ;D
going to check out ONP for the season now!
Woohoo!  Looks very nice

Sorry I couldn't join you.  This weekend maybe?
Randy thanks for bringing this to our attention.  i 'm anxious for tours up there especially on tuesdays and wed. and any day the park decides to not open .
Meant to include 'First time poster, long time lurker'. The lower powder was to die for, like being on a trampoline it was so soft and bouncy. Totally excited for the wet weather moving in!
thanks for helping, Drew,
and thanks for the conditions report.
Welcome to TAY.
great action shots!

makes me wish i'd been up there instead of working on friday morning...

Cool you guys got out there! How was base up high on castle?

Glacierbrains: There was a decent amount of snow up on the saddle. None of the usual cornices, and definitely still early season, but not a problem. In the trees, the snow was great, but not enough of it to cover all the brush. Let's connect soon about me, Miles, and Andy heading up to Bham t...
