There are similar signs elsewhere where DOT does artillery-driven control work. If you tour the NW margin of Stevens, for example, you'll find them. I think they're effectively "Warning, we have a howitzer (or a tank) and we will use it against this terrain. We don't want to shoot you with it, but we can't tell if you're there. Please find somewhere else to play, so everyone can have a better day."

so the DOT warning is about spent shells from avi control?  does that mean some didn't go off and are potentially live?

also, ever done the north face of Rock?

I'm not sure exactly what the sign is warning about. It's positioned in such a place that it would make sense that is is indicating you shouldn't descend down to int...
can you post a picture of the pocket you skied?
Looks good… this november is definitely a good one!  Premonitions for the rest of the season  ;D
Yea,  Good beta.  Better not ski CJ until that is nicely filled in  ;)

Skinning up and down is classic.
Nice to see you found the smoky stuff earlier in the weekend. A few laps up to the top of Skyline at Stevens on Sunday morning yielded a nice pre-Thanksgiving gift: mashed potatoes!

Thanks for the beta. Looking NASTY.
Friday was a great day up there; by Saturday things had settled a bit.
Holy crap thats huge! Im sure the multitude of slides will fill it.
Hey, is that Silas, cranking GS turns on those Mannies??? Must be the Indian and not the bow...  ;)
HIgher elevations didn't disappoint - heavy pow was harvested on north-facing slopes above 4.5k. We arrived at the leisurely hour of 10am to an almost full A lot which spilled-over into lots B and E in the afternoon. Lots of folks out playing in the snow; easily two dozen folks skinning around the frontside throughout the day.

Made it up to the top of Skyline before noon and took a lap down to the breakover towers on Brooks. Went back up for another and opted to plod the rest of...
Thanks, David. Looking forward to pictures.

Thank you guys, those pictures truly capture the magic. We were heartbroken to have forgotten the camera gear at home.
Ha, road laps are a nice slice of humanity. Day 4! I better catch up.
Thanks for the update. I knew you were out there somewhere.

nice TR hope you get some goodness at Rogers.
Hey Aaron, great to meet you guys!  Was a fun day on the dawg despite the wind.  Did you guys do some laps?  From above, it looked like you guys found a sweet spot to harvest. Hope to cross paths again… call us out if you see us… I was in a blue jacket and Chris was in red.  Surprising more folks were not out and about.  Passed a couple other parties on our exit as they headed down.  Was a grand day, glad you guys got it as well!

What was that sound?  Soul music?
That's what us young whipper snappers call "Music"... Soul 7 music!  :D
A bit softer than Heliotrope Ridge, looked good. The Rossis like figure 11s :-)

I think Ale Capone has an inner sensor for when the snow is ready… and for where the crowds will not be.  It was an excellent adventure and we were the only 3.
Dang! Way to think outside of the box! No crowds here.
Hey great photos, we were in the group right below you guys. It is good to see that you found some good snow up there.
There are definitive seasonal milestones in this life.  Daylight savings time beginning in March heralds in the rock climbing season.  Hiway 20 opening signals alpine rock and skiing. And Ale Capone's first tour off Steven's Pass tells us winter touring is upon us.
Stevens definitely got lots of snow Sat night, and it fell pretty hard at times while we were out Sunday.
Jealous.  That area is so esthetic.  Good to hear the road is still manageable.

Great photos!

Group stoke is a good thing  ;D
Wow!  A friend and I skied part of the Emmons glacier in about a foot of fresh powder, but I'm still amazed at how much more snow the north side holds.  It looks like there was a few extra feet on your side.
Great photos. Such an awesome day with the sun out! 4x4 and snowies didn't slip once on the road. I am wondering if any one tried to get up to skyline Sunday.
...don't see the need to start a whole new thread... would certainly echo that the group stoke was alive and well. My only observation that differed was the road condition... a little spicy with the Subaru, mostly from the cold temps. Chains on, and it was no problem.

More pictures and thoughts can be found here.

Nice job.  I love lift-skinning in the pre-season.
The Stevens webcams looked as if there was more snow Sat. night and yesterday?
Nice, Dan and Scott.  You're right - that looks like a great playground!  Thanks for the inspiration.  Good pictures - I've been wanting to get up there for a long time.
Rocks the best yo...nice jacket Kololo
Great to see the nice line !
Thanks for posting this. The Olympics are such a fabulous range.
As of Nov. 3, Colchuck Glacier is loaded with new snow. It would have made a wonderful ski today, but we were wallowing up to our waists trying to climb Colchuck Peak. The boulder field on the other hand is pretty miserable, with just enough snow to make things very tedious.
Thanks for the intel!
We backpacked up to Colchuck lake last weekend. Looked pretty thin up there.
Rolfs, your drive never ever fails to impress!  Nice effort getting you and your kit up there for some dubious turns.  Thanks for the conditions pics!
So Mike, as kind of a general statement about pursuing skiing the year around, and with you report of crappy snow. All I could think about all day long, was that you were out skiing, and I was home not skiing!
O NO!!!!

I had originally planned on skiing somewhere in the stuart range the day we skied daniel. I am now very glad we didn't! We thought it might be a bit too far east and too dry.

Way to get after it and check it out anyway. I feel like its days like you had that make the good days so much better!!!!

And, I'm still jealous of you because I was at work.

...but with the crack of noon start...

HAHAHA!  Did you say "crack of noon?"  I know those guys who ski at Rainier start comfortably late, but Jamie, I think they mean 9-ish :)

Sure would have liked to join you on this one.  One of these day's.  Sunny ski from Muir to Paradise.  It's in the cards for sure.
