That's a really fun ski descent.  Way to get after it.  Now go get the Ice Cliff!
I don't know, it was a beautiful spot, woulda been a great location for a foreskin sacrifice . . . looks like you made a good call on going Saturday, yesterday was a little greyer and wetter!
Lowell:

i appreciate the photos of the skis, and i'm very intrigued by them.  how long were they and what do you estimate for camber?  i'd like to build something similar for fun...

BTW, Jerry did you mean "circumnavigation"? ;D

I never was to good with spelling ::)
Sounds like you guys had a nice day too.

Paul, did see Kam's pic of you on ttips?
Dave.
I'll be sure to ask Brett about it in the morning. Thanks for the TR and the conditions update. A few of us are thinking of a dusk patrol at Alpental on Tuesday after work/school. Care to join?

Best,
Jessica

Looks like you guys had a great day and got caught up on some zzzzz's as well, nice job!  Imagine that was bryan and carol up there.  We tried Fortune and Ingalls 2 weeks ago and got caught in that sudden storm.  Never been so wet...then managed to leave my soggy pants on top of the car after changing so quickly.  You didn't find them on the road did you??  >:(
Congratulation on leading your first Mountee trip!  It was really nice to explore a little peak, whose summit is just above Allyson in the picture.

BTW, Jerry did you mean "circumnavigation"? ;D
nice photos, jer!  glad we all made it across the traverse(s) from hell without incident. ;)

thanks you guys for a great day--i'll take more of those kind of "rainy" days anytime!  8)
Nice work! Looks like a fun Tatoosh outing  8)
Thanks for the report.  That Lake Annette run is one Charles introduced me to eons ago.  May try to get up mid-week.
Another fine day out in the mountains  8)
Even though Michael didn't get to sleep-in, he managed to catch-up on that lost sleep at the summit

Additional trip photos are posted here
Sweet stuff Drew.  3:15...that's cruising!

I like your description of the "glassy snow."  That is some of my favorite stuff to ski on.  I call it a candy shell, but glassy is more descriptive.  I think we may be edging in on the fabled Eskimo style of having dozens of names for snow :)

Thanks for reporting.
Joe, thanks for the report.  I know the feeling about doing solo trips.  It can fill a void.

Good to meet you Michael, a short jaunt for me today with time to make it back home to mow the lawn and have dinner with the in laws from out of town, good coverage still and nice snow today, I think a evening ski this week might be in the books................

Good to see you Michael, and what a great tour with very short drive from Seattle and no booting approach.  Did we park about 3800'?  Snow consistency was excellent,  1/2 inch of butter atop firmness.

After one run in the basin, we decided to explore the line toward Annette Lake for dkoelle.  It was superb!  Not narrow at all, constant pitch (25 degrees?), fairly smooth, and 1000' of mostly wide open slopes.   Then it entered forest with alder ground cover, we chose not to...
Nice.
That's a good one.

my 7 year-old daughter is quite impressed by Kitty...

7 years old and already having fun Nordic and Alpine skiing?  Tell your sweetheart that Kitty is very impressed with her! :)

I started out the same at 5 with my red mini skis down the hill in the front yard.  It's about being outside in the beautifully snowy mounta...
Better to be out than not, but your report confirms that it was a good idea to bail on my plan to take my son up there on Sunday for his annual backcountry ski trip. Thanks for the report.
Monika, my 7 year-old daughter is quite impressed by Kitty on Broken Top and Longs Pass! She said,
" Hey, that's just like my kitty." You are inspiring the next generation. So far my little blond girl skis a little on lifts and a little cross country. Randonnee skiing will have to be a few years down the road.
Great pictures Joe and Monica! Looks like you had a great descent in the main couloir.
It was really a great surprise to see you guys show up as we about to leave the camp. Thanks a lot for kicking these steps!
Good report-
At least you were able to enjoy some early flora before the Hannegan-OffHaggen visibility. ::)

Looked like you made the best of the time and space!
Joe
Kelvin, Paul and Cass: nice photos!
btw Cass, your 4-season tent was overkill for the weather conditions we experienced.

The back country trip was a fantastic loop trip (90 feet of elevation change) in the Sparks lake area.
A great loop trip for sure! with some epic elevation drop 8)
Great accounts of the trip Kam & Darryl!
More photos of the "Sparks Lake Tour", camping/slack-linin...
you could walk through the 'squeeze' to get to the upper couloir and put on your skis there, the top was maybe 45 degrees but i'm not a terribly good judge of pitch.    If it doesn't look good though, it didn't look too difficult to ski/walk around the east side of snagtooth to access an easier route into the northwest fork cedar creek drainage.

Snow is definitely melting fast on the east side.  I don't think we could've skied m...
Don't know where you guys are from but its Mt. STUART.

Maybe your just tryin' to be funny. Ha Ha.  :D

Anyway, looks bitchin!!
What a great couple of days on Mt Stewart! I am not going to write a long TR since Jd and JoE have done a great job at it.

So here are the quick highlights from our team for this week end:

  • Seeing our friends from New York Pierre and Elena happy to finally see some sun on Sunday after having skied in the rain on Saturday and having thought “what the hell are we doing here?” as they woke up under the rain again Sunday morning.

  • Spending a great nig...
Thanks Joe for the report,  an awesome trip and  blazing through with your "real" truck to cut those 2 miles off the road! :D
And my big thanks to Oyvind for all the steps you set up those final steep sections to the false and true summits.  Joe and I appreciated it and so did the rest of the groups behind us.

as you can see kitty had a good time too
Our intent was to have a great backcountry trip (Broken Top) which turn into pretty damn fun back, front and side country trips.

On the drive to Bend, we did visit every Black Bear restaurant in OR.  That was pretty fun!

The back country trip was a fantastic loop trip (90 feet of elevation change) in the Sparks lake area.  We had a thrilling 3 turn run from the road into the ditch below the road and toured the beautiful Sparks lake shoreline.  Allyson and Cinammon talked...
Excellent. Did you put a couple of hibachis out for "curb feelers" on that 20-point turnaround?

no, but there was a line up of small flaming hibachis in the bachelor parking lot Mon afternoon that Kelvin pointed out for me....could have easily taken out 3 or 4 now that I've had some practice  ;D
Nice photos, Bachelor is such a great area, looks like you were having a fun time.    Wow Cinnamon and Kam, way to balance on the webbing, you know "geezers" can't do that  ;).

Yes, solo.  The usual suspects were either unavailable or had more sense.
Great report, Pete.  I love all the granite, larch and steep valleys back there.  Thanks also for the route map.  Couple questions: how steep is the exit from that narrow couloir?  Is there a lot of melt low in the Cedar Creek valleys, or is most of the snowpack still intact? Looks like another east side weekend might be in store.

enjoy,

Mark
Sure is a spectacular place.  It must have been nice to enjoy the scenery solo, yes?

Sherpa Glacier's a really fun ski too...
Sorry everyone Seems as though my free web hosting site can not keep up with the data transfer that has been requested.  Give a chance to work this out....
Silas:  good to hear you had great weather -- i wish i could have seen/experienced the cloud deck.  thanks for the TR.
yup....that be me....in that fine Scottish restaurant....a long, long time ago...

Enjoyed a chat with the Scotsman (10 days sans cigarettes!)

What's this!  Who's going to provide me with my once annual Marlboro Light at Camp Muir?  I almost picked up the habit after last year's sublime smoke at 10,000 feet with Scotty.  But it wasn't to be, as the smell stuck with me through the night in my little one man tent.  Couldn't hack it.
hey kam, thanks for posting the tr and great photo on the butte.  who would have guessed we'd be skiing powder with blue bird skies after our lovely car camp at sparks lake  ;)   glad we could come to the rescue that night with pizza and beer for those hard core types in the group, huddled in the megamid while we read vanity fair "waiting" for the pepperoni to cook on the sunny side.  the bc experience at its best.  ;D  thanks to everybody for a memorable memorial day!

Paul was most excited about our camping spot.

yes, paul was quite fond of that place.  both he and kam really missed out when they decided to drive back to bend on saturday for pizza and beer, instead of joining the rest of us on the 'sparks lake loop tour'...  ::)

great trip, everyone!  i'm glad we were able to enjoy som...
No fault, even though I thought the left was correct, it looked off angle.  The right side looked like great fall line and had that nice bowl shape, it was too hard to resist.  I also kind of enjoyed the adventure of the final scramble (my wife might have enjoyed it a little less).  I don't feel bad about missing out on the downclimb.

When you look down from the top, you can see that the correct chute is pretty good fall line too, with just a little off angle near the bottom.
That reminds me of this fatal avalanche on May 31, 1998:

The picture at the bottom of the link is taken from the other side of Crater Rock, but it involves much of the same terrain.
whoops, sorry to lead you astray with our old tracks...guess my buddy whose been up there a couple times before had been going up the wrong way every time...now I know betta.
(phil, you were right all along!)
Silas,

Did you get that fantastic vertiginous feeling, nearly nauseasting, looking down at the cloud deck while bombing the snowfield?  It sure was great yesterday!

Oh, yes, contradictory as ever: Sunday was great powder, just had to get above the clouds.
There was a narrow strip of snow along the edge of the tree line that dropped as far as we could look, which wasn't really that far, so I'm not sure but couldn't interest anyone in the narrow ski followed by having to boot back up given that it was not looking skinning-friendly down there. But if you're into skiing the ribbon, it may be well worth exploring for at least a few days yet...
Hey Jim

The Lake Annette-side run: no go at all, or just kind of narrow and short?  I think I have skied it when in parts it was only a few ski-widths wide, and didn't go down that far (there is a "choke point" about 3/4 of the way down to the trail where you break through from the big talus field to a shorter shot, for example).  Is it worth it dropping it part-way? David
Ron - Many thanks for the great tour!

Someone had to do it and I personally feel that we sent one of our "best men".

One of the best indeed!  Not only did Ron agree to go on his "weekend off" given the marginal weather, but he planned the route, navigated flawlessly through full IFR conditions, presented the complete ski/mining history of the local area as we toured, and (insert really big drum roll here) bro...
Dave,
Talking with ski folks at the "office" on days back is often a highlight to those mornings.  Trading ski stories with a 6th grader in May really takes the cake! I asked Brett if Summerland was a go considering the weather. He told well of his day at Stevens. Glad you got the window of good weather. Nice photos; great to see him on skis.  Looking forward to skiing with you all sometime soon.

Cheers,
Jessica
