Man Ohh Man
Treasure those runs.
I was just at the mountain
and it's rain soaked and done.

D00d! I sat at my cubicle all day yesterday and daydreamed of doing just what you did.
I should of gone, because I didn't get any work done anyway.
Nice poem too.
If I'd tried that in my posts, it would look something like this...

Yeah, Great report, Eric.
Thanks.
I am sick to my tummy that I can't be there...

Best trip report of the season SnoHoe - WTG!
Good to meet you too. Thanks for keeping an eye on her. I think she started down the wrong track but then couldn't climb back up to ours because the snow was so deep.

I dont think I'll be bringing them out on any big snow days after the little incident with Keller. And even then I really want to try and get some older frequency transceivers on them, although they may be impossible to find now. One would think that the next generation beacons that "talk" to eachoth...
I also enjoyed the weekend goods.  Felt good to get back on the snow.  Good to run into Preston and Alex on the Up track briefly, that wind was a good reminder to throw the gloves and hood back on.  Loom, a new TAYer and I dropped into the valley then made a variation of memorial gardens (Skiers right of Iceberg) down to Rex....One discovery...spring took all my wax, what is the trick to not destroying my skins??

is it Saturday yet?
I'll be sure to have my camera the next time we run into you.

Please do cause when conditions are right I usually sport some of my own tusks. ;D

Yeah just talked to a buddy that was up there on Sunday.  He was doing top to bottoms on the front side.  Enough said.
Thanks Eric.....gross! ;D  I guess I owe you one.  I'll be sure to have my camera the next time we run into you. ;)

The snow was incredible, only felt a few rocks under the new snow on Saturday.  There was significantly more snow on Sunday.  The wind was really blowing up there. All the snow was blown off of ridge as the cat track approached the Rex, and the snow lower down was wind packed making progress through the lower angles more difficult.  More snow to come...sweet!!!!
Gotta love that flexible work schedule.

chrism the establishment I work for is currently hiring if your interested.
snoslut, i'm curious what establishment of employment affords such a "bankers" schedule?  are they hiring  ;)
Saturday was really, really fun.  Sunday was really, really windy on the ridge (but still fun).  We bailed after a lap for warmer environs.

Good to see you on the hill.
Good to meetcha then!  When we were all standing around by the patrol shack, I'm the guy who picked up Duct Tape Dog (Keller?  Appropriate name for a deaf pooch) in a failed attempt to get him back up to you...  Glad they made it down okay.  And yup, I'll bet that was Phoebe hitting the line between the trees with my friends.
That may have been mine.  We had two dogs with us, a black lab named Phoebe and a scrappy deaf guy named Keller (pointer/lab mix) wearing a sweater wrapped in copious quantities of duct tape (which worked great until it had to come off...).  I was nearby, although at one point Phoebe wandered around the wrong side of some trees.  They dont do too well with large crowds -- Keller especially hates it when people/things move away from him, which is why he freaked out when we held him...
True, true -- though, to be fair, those huge lineups were hacking their way up to the top of Chair 1, which is hardly a BC destination.  We decided to head in that direction because we weren't willing to break trail all the way out to Table... :)  Still, I agree.

Which dog did you have?  There were several folks out with dogs -- small ones too.  We found ourselves skiing with one poor pooch that had lost its owner and was trying to wallow its way down the slope.  Tough conditions...
I was there on Sunday, and noticed the same sort of instability, which resulted in a  panicked moment when a slough I kicked off briefly buried my poor dog Keller. Fortunately he is a great swimmer, and popped out before I really hit the panic button.

Tough skiing, tough dog conditions, huge crowds. There needs to be some way to educate the snowboarding and alpine skiing public about the benefits of AT, split boards, snowshoes, and approach skis ... most of these guys seem willi...
Skip's right that the graupel shouldn't last long - looks like Wednesday should warm up a good deal, hopefully just enough to harden this stuff a bit over the rocks and brush, and we'll be off to a darned fine start!

Maybe I should have brought the longer board???

Where have I heard this line before?  Still picking the wrong tools for the job.

I was just heading out of my soggy camp about the time you got to Tombstone.  All I got was a brutally steep slog up (and down) a narrow ridge in 4 inches of fluff...and a height measurement of one of the best...
Nice report Jeff!  It's too bad about Hwy 35, but hopefully they'll be able to make headway soon and get some kind of temporary road in place, at least on the west side.  Zig Zag canyon is always an option, but lengthy!  I came across this report some time back.  http://www.spiritone.com/~carpjam/html/hood/paradise2.04.html

Is that Three Fingered Jack? Looks like there is some good terrain out there. Might be the place to go for Portlanders shut out of the North and West side of Hood.

It's actually Iron Mountain.  Three Fingered Jack (although much bigger) is several miles east, and has longer access.  I took a picture of TFJ today, but the light wasn't quite right and it d...

nice to see this after my weekend in the mid-west, where a thrilling thunder and lightning storm made for my only weather wows.
nice job guys.
and lovely photos there skip.

...and after initial plans farther north in the Cascades were thwarted by access issues...

Does that mean that something near the Baker Dam washed out, or that there is just too much snow covering the acess roads?

Its excellent to see so much snow so close by -- thanks for the post!

I'd say the other big concern would be the noggin'.  Check out Cityhick's video from Crystal.  It is an excellent reminder to avoid headers until the snowpack gets a bit deeper.
Let me first say that I only went half-throttle with that strangely large can and it still gave me a stomach ache.  It seemed like a reasonable idea at the gas station.  In any case, I thought I would add a few more photos to provide a feel for downhill conditions:

Dude, everbody knows that "diet Rockstar" is where it's at!

Nice work, gents.

Not quite as spectacular as your last jaunt in the Tatoosh... ;)

Can you give any details about snowpack stability?  Any weak layers to be aware of?

We opted for a hike with the dogs instead of breaking out the rock skis, but in any case, at the end of the day up near Snow Lake (which has a nicely pounded out trail which made for easy travel for the mobility-challenged dogs), there was quite a thick layer of graupel building up (di...
nice to hear Snoq. Pass is skiable!

It's taken me quite a while to sort through my photos from the past October Paradise Patch ski, but it seems to be an appropriate time to post a few of these, given the latest storm that has hit Mt Rainier and surrounding area very hard  :'(.  It seems strange to see the conditions we were skiing less than one month ago  :D.

Nice to know there's some snow falling somewhere while we get deluged with rain up here in the PNW.

Having spent some time living down in California, I remember the spring corn quite well and try to make a point of getting down there at least once a year in the spring for an extended tour of some type. Last year, it was a circumnavigation of Whitney and the year before a great trip through the Palisades. It really is a great place to explore with great extended touring options th...
I am an addict and have a tobacco drug problem

This whole time I thought cigs were addicted to you.
Ron,
being the gentleman that he is ,thought  in retrospect that the picture of me with a cigarette in my mouth may have embarressed me so he nuked it and that is why it's not coming up.

It didn't ,as I don't hide the fact that I am an addict and have a tobacco drug problem but I appreciate his consideration and that's what makes him such a fine fellow.

Scotty.
Why yes Maddog.  Just right click on your mouse and select "show picture" and it should show up.  It does for me anyways.
I know that Ron is trying out a new photo site, all I'm able to see in his original post is a box with a red X in it  :'(, is anyone else having trouble viewing the photo insert in the thread?
I think that it is high time that you joined the year round skier page, Chris. A third TAY anniversary is a good excuse to do it now.
Hey Jodebaker,
I'm being sponsored by the R.J. Reynold's Randonee Team. There's not many of us and our career's are short-lived. ;D

Very bad example.My bad.
Nice work Chris and gang,
By the looks of this picture you are either cleaning up the parking lot with your teeth or started smokin again. ;)

Joe
Nice timing on the 'weather window'; hopefully the entire 'patch' didn't get washed away in the monsoon...

I was there too, perhaps the last party off the hill. The wind at Pan Pt was blowing something fierce, and it was raining sideways, so we settled on the patch. Managed to ski down to Golden Gate and on the trail below, which turned out to be a bad idea since there wasn't enough room to stop and I basically had to crash to stop before flying off the switchbacks.
Way to squeak in a few before it hit the fan.  Looks like it'll be awhile before anyone gets back up there.
It was a good time meeting you at the Snowbash.  Glad we got to talk early on.  My hearing will never be the same.

it was my 3 year TAY anniversary.  ;D
It was nice sharing your TAY anniversary  ;D, with some fairly good turns.
author=Scotsman link=topic=5469.msg23024#msg23024 date=1162922636] You could stay ontop without breaking through if you had fat skis and "thought light". ;)

You're right, Scotty, we sure did nail the good weather window -- the forecast was spot on, both timing and the 6k ft snow level forecast.
And congrads on knocking out 3 years, Scotty.
Here's a shot of Scotty with the kind of ski buddy that makes getting to 3 yrs of year round skiing a lot easier:

More pics
Way to get after it!

Climbinghighest, his buddy Chris and myself braved the storm on Friday and made it to 7,150ft.  Sideways rain/sleet/snow mix with a constant 40mph wind, with occassional stronger gusts, and near whiteout conditions turned us around.  Skiied down in split mode down to where the Pan Pt traverse starts going down.  Climbinghighest on his homemade skiied all the way down Pan Pt and beyond.  The snow was wet fresh.

A kayak would have been...
Yeah, Telemetry says don't go.
Cool beans, i wish I could be skiing some steeps :)
Brings back sweet memories of the Dragontail in July. And, well, I was climbing it instead!
Well done, MRNP is a fantastic place.... :)
Nice work -- looks narrow!  Got any pictures of the whole line?
BillK - Thanks, my bad.  Trying to juggle too many things at once.
glad to see rainier is getting some winter, i hope the pattern continues!  and congrats to all of you streakers for raking in the months!  very inspiring for sure.

First time I waited to the last weekend of the month and was really thankful for good weather!

bet that felt good paul!  way to push it to the limit.   ;D
