Did you go from Corrigan Lk?

We park at a log landing a little south of the Pioneer Gulch trail head. It's a little higher in elevation than PG (maybe 2-300 feet). There's no trail, but the bushwhacking isn't too bad.
Just a few comments.

One of the main ideas behind that quote, for me, is that death is always there with us.  It's an integral part of life.  Sometimes it's easy to look for that happy place, be it a "reasonable" trip or a "safe" powder stash, then forget about what's always waiting.  The quote, as much of an absurd atrocity as it may seem to some, is about living life with consciousness and conviciton.  When it's in my face...
Ha. Ha. It's all good. I'm just glad to be here.
Sky's ridiculous -- we actually spoke a bit about him this weekend at the Crystal search.  I think I said "I read his reports and say 'wow, that's uhh.. man, no thanks, but that's awesome'"  Everyone's limits are their own, for sure, and I don't think he would pull off the stuff he does so regularly if he wasn't pretty safe overall.

But yeah, hadn't read the most recent edits -- that softens the remark a bit.
You're right Marcus. I was making edits throughout and maybe my last one wasn't read? If so, sorry Lowell, but I just think Sky often gets a bad rap (and I could be wrong) because he does technically challenging climbs and descents that are beyond most our capabilities and/or assumption of risk. But I must say, that dude is smart in the mountains. He certainly wouldn't be getting his PHD in Nuclear Physics in a month if he weren't smart as hell. That same drive and intelligen...
It was pretty easy to take it the way Lowell did, out of context -- I did, for one.  I'm not surprised to hear that Sky's philosophy isn't that extreme...

Anyway, glad you're okay and look forward to seeing the pictures when you feel it's time to share them.

Well, I think that Sky's quote is taken out of context and does not represent an accurate nor complete portrayal of his "viewpoint".  Just wanted to get that out there.

All that said, it's impossible to not ask one's self some questions after trip like this, and I'm sort of in the process of doing that right now.

"Security is mostly a superstition.  It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it.  Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure.  Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing."

Glad you were able to hike out.

Thanks for the reminder Jason.  It is a careful dance that we do, those of us for whom the exposure is an essential part of the thrill.  It will again be nice to have you around.

I'm glad you are okay.  Wow.  Tolkien is a god of words.
Kyle told me he's trying to learn how to do headstands while riding...I guess it's easier to try on corn than on pow...;)  Nice tracks guys!

How far up Helens did you get?

not far really, a mile or so past the climbers bivy.. we went the wrong way from the trailhead and ended up in a gulley... by the time we got back on the ridge, we were pretty late.. we did make some nice turns back down the ridge and through the trees.. im itching to ge...

Sam was somewhat beat up from so much vert in so few days, so we topped off his PNW visit with a couple of mellow ski tours this weekend.  I don't think we've seen the last of Sam in the PNW.

I'm glad to learn that he got his fill.  That young buck seemed insatiable early on in his visit.

It was good of everyone to show him ar...
Sweet!  I was wondering how the Diamond routes were holding up.  It looks like you found some good snow.  It'll probably go pretty fast with the upcoming hot weather expected.  Did you go from Corrigan Lk?
author=skierguitarist link=topic=10437.msg42178#msg42178 date=1214247630] So where are you skiing at locally these days...like in these pics.?

Rich,
There is plenty of snow up around Chinook and Sunrise may open in the upcoming weeks. If you PM me I can keep you up on the conditions if you want to know. These pictures were taken at Bullion basin, a bit of a hike with skis on the back. No need for climbing skins there.
It really was...
Nice tracks guys -- a fitting farewell.

For the life of me, though, I can't figure out what Kyle's got going on in that second picture.  :)

Let's get out there and get some turns sometime soon fellas.
Hi Joe!  So where are you skiing at locally these days...like in these pics.?

Here in Bend, I'm thinking of heading over to N. sister for a look... friends said two weekends ago everything looked in condition (though things can change mighty rapidly).   Century drive is open supposedly (from Bach. on out to Devils lake and s. sister trail hd.).

Yah work is not working as I have none and now I'm sicker than a dog...so as soon as I get my health back, it back to the...
Great pics.  Good deed this weekend.

Samthaman from VT is at the airport.  He had good things to say about skiing with you guys at Chinook Pass early in his PNW trip.  I hope to bump into you you someday.
Sam is now at the airport.  He said that he enjoyed his outings, and that you were a good guy with whom to tour.  Sam was somewhat beat up from so much vert in so few days, so we topped off his PNW visit with a couple of mellow ski tours this weekend.  I don't think we've seen the last of Sam in the PNW.

It appears you had an electrifying experience. Glad it wasn't too shocking.

Is the road opened to the Devil's Lake Trailhead?

Let's just say that those were the only terror-induced turns I've ever made.  I actually made some fairly graceful turns considering the first 300 feet or so was with climbing wires up and skins still on.&...

I'm glad everyone is okay. It could have easily taken out all three skiers, the snowboarder, four people below (visiting from Boston), and me and my partner had it entrained just a bit more. As it was it stopped only 10 yards or so from where the four Boston people were.

We were the two you ran into on the way out.

You were right; there was a lot less debris heading toward Pineapple Pass than toward Chair peak.  I'd recommend heading left from Source Lake.  Coverage was quite good for late June.  Surface was moderately cupped, but soft enough.  Well worth the trip.
Thanks for the report Marco and to Ron and Jeanette for trip planning and touring guide. Weather is never a problem with Garfunkel and you are right about the support from the community. Next we get Jeanette back on two feet!!
It appears you had an electrifying experience. Glad it wasn't too shocking.

Is the road opened to the Devil's Lake Trailhead?
I camped just off the road on friday night and woke at 5am to near daylight (gotta love the longest day of the year). I was hiking on the road by 5:45.

Spotty snow on the road made it a hike instead of a ski-- my guess is the road will become more and more passable by car and open all the way shortly.

The hike from the trail head to the large river crossing is largely a bush whack. Don't worry about losing the trail, just continue heading towards the river. I agree wi...
you guys never cease to amaze me with your superhero strength and speed!  photos look great too.  :)
Thanks for the ride!
Aloha Dale, and All you friends of Mt. Hood climbing and skiing.
Please allow me to introduce myself. I came to Hood from Northern Michigan in "74 and met Dale Crockatt at Timberline Lodge. He is the man, no brag, just fact.  We did the high route around Mt. Hood twice in the late "70s. Once on on a day trip, and once with a bivouac. More later. Stay tuned. I've got a lot of stories, but all my pictures are ancient technology.
Thank you,
St. Alphonso
Yep - we were the pair that you guys encountered earlier in the day. We booted up the wrong mini-gulley ahead of you, realized our mistake, skied it, and headed for the basin that leads to Del Campo. Skiing the avy debris gives new meaning to skiing trees. Fun day thrashing in the forest with a friend!

There are bomber avy-generated snowbridges in the basin leading to Del Campo, once the one that you guys crossed melts out.

I'll pull some of my photos if you guys post...
Nice pix of your wife. Nice to ski Cowboy Mtn. with you last weekend, and good job getting more skin time. Up for a Sunday ski next weekend?
Nice tour.

I'm thinking of doing this tomorrow (Monday).

Any advice of ski routes off of the north face of Seymour peak?

Did you do a car shuttle/hitchhike for this?

- Matt
Telemack,

Bill Doyle here, we chatted at the top of the lift.
Thanks for the report Pete, I was thinking of heading up into Gothic Basin soon. I took the trail like you last time and it was a steep side-hilling hump.
JD
not sure if you're the same JD on TAY that my buddy kevin and i met on rainier last june or not, but live in bend and if you're down for skiing next weekend and need an extra partner let me know.  have fri/sat/sun off.
cheers,
chris
nicely done...definitely looks like the best way to get into Del Campo right now...we gave Del Campo a try on Saturday morning via Weden Creek/Gothic Basin trail.  Deep snow cover in the valley bottom, huge piles of avy debris, and high water levels in creeks made for very slow going...we ran out of time and turned around before even making it to Foggy Lake.  Have to opt for the Sunrise Mine side next time now that the slide alder jungle has been conveniently obliterated by avies.
Ahh Mt Baldy. I remember a multi-foot bluebird opening day when I lived down there. Good stuff..
impressive. very impressive!
Thanks again for the report since Eric and I are headed down there next week. I know what you mean about the photos eating time! Where you going next?
What a great place to ski! Thanks Jim, for talking John and I into skiing another pitch. And for the record: I was able to sooth Regi's nerves...

Jim climbing the final pitch.

John slaying some steep corn.

Wow, asandygal, thanks for sharing your pics of these areas!  I am memorized!  Way to get it - for 57 straight months!
I forgot to add some other route photos. I drove up Lolo Pass Rd afterwards, I was shocked to find it blocked by a large snowdrift at only 2900 ft, about 8 miles (?) from US 26. So no way to get the NW head-on shot of Sandy Headwall, but I could get westerly shots of Reid and Sandy:

got a "loaner" ;) camcorder from wal-mart, made a pretty mediocre video of my nonstop 12-8.5ish K descent of the finger, kind of cool sound effects though, no editing, it gets kind of boring, when i start traversing towrds the end.

Thanks for the report, we're heading down that way Monday, we'll see if the weather cooperates.
I headed up that way today (the 21st) to make another mosey up Snoqualmie. Things on the N/E side of the valley are pretty well melted out. In the ski resort, coverage is still kind of ok, with solid coverage on International. Near the base, you'll be patching things together. The "backcountry"'s still mostly covered, as is the E aspect of Bryant. Access to the upper part of Snoqualmie's probably more enjoyable from the Commonwealth side now, though the steep forest was...
