We also enjoyed the free visit from NPS!

I agree, snow was great, scenery was gorgeous, blue skies.

First turns of the season, not a bad start!!

Buddy of mine took this picture from Pan Point...
It was a fantastic day with spectacular weather and awesome snow. I will sum it up: YEAH!!!

Wow, that's a lot of tracks!   Mother Nature shook the etch-a-sketch to clear it all overnight I guess.  Today was a blank slate.
Silas, are you skiing every day? Awesome.
I ended up skiing the bowl on the north face of Yakima Peak today - and our group of three were surprised there was no one else there. Just the three of us riding pow all day. I guess everyone was across the street! It would have been fine either way, but funny that everyone headed there...

20 of you??? Jesus H Christ do you TAYers only go around as a "gang" now".

Maybe we should, to protect ourselves from ttipsters, TGReaserchers, and other Negative Nelsons? ;)

Actually I counted 16 people plus our four, dunno how many were TAYers besides Jodabaker, snoslut, dromond, tim_place, myself and eli.  We saw four alpine skiers booting u...

"fresh tracks for all"......... socialist!!!!!
Sure was a fun day. and not only was the snow quality unexpected, so too was the weather quality better than expected.
My wife and I were the ones just headed in for a quick lap as you guys were getting back to the road. You guys certainly had great weather, by the time we were in the bowl visability got pretty poor. It was great to get a quick lap in :)
Nice!

How was the wind over there? It was a bit windy on heliotrope, nothing crazy, but windy.
Wow I was just thinking about heading up this weekend, was suprised you could still make it up to the lake but that cuts out some skinning for sure and actually looks like some decent snow up there !
Yumpin Yimminy, thats sum fine consumables you fellers found ! A preview of things to come? Ya sure, youbetcha ! My 56 year old arthritic bod with snotty knees and a dose of pneumonia at the moment just got adrenalated....Thanks !!
I absolutely love that last picture and caption. Thanks AT!
Congrats on the 2 mil, Andy and Mike!

Nothing like Whistler without all the people!

I was also stoked to finish climbing 2 million feet backcountry skiing and mountain biking in less than two years...

Holy Kashmoly!  I'd love to have legs like that again. Curious, are you using one of the Sunnto watches to log your journey?  I've found them useful and accurate.  Nice job!, and nice lines
Cool. I think that we'll go check that out tomorrow. In the last photo it looks very much like you are skiing uphill!
Hi Keith!  Early season is in full swing.
Languishing in my office this morning, I was wickedly jealous as I looked at the web cams at Paradise.  Glad you got the ski in from Chinook to Sourdough Gap, a trip I did in my first ski season with Del Langbauer's ski touring course at UPS in January, 1977.  It was an El Nino year and the pass was still open that January.
Heh.  I've done that luge run out along the trail.  Truly terrifying.  Glad you got some good turns up there.

The Maple and Heather Pass area (basically Rainy Pass) gets more snow than Washington Pass, making it a good spot for early-season skiing, luge run aside.  In the springtime Washington Pass has better and easier options, so that's where we west-siders end up going by default.  I mean, when someone drags those Seattle-dwellers kicking and sc...
Thanks for the report, nice music, you must be a geezer like me and Scotty.  Looks like he was just a week early in his North Cascades visit.  We westerners need to head east before the pass closes!
Is this near snoqualmie pass???
Incredible day on the hill.  It was great to put so many names and faces together.

Silas, I hope all your veteran's day wishes came true.
Now I am really kicking myself for missing this one.

Savegonder, I may be up for a Monday trip.
Skyline is where we hit the fewest rocks, and that was mostly on the trail ski out. Hit no rocks when actually making quality turns. Snow was bonding well, as the base was saturated and getting colder. There was evidence of older sluffs, I produced newer sluff an here was a tiny slab on a roll over that did not have much energy to it. It just petered out. I'll find a pic...
Nice work, Drew!  Now get to work on my skis!!! LOL  Lookin forward to seeing some pics  :)
:)! Looking forward to the photos! Enough snow in the basin below the glacier to provide good skiing?

Way to spend your free time!  Keep skiing while you can ;D

Let's get out sometime.

Many props to Murray on his ski strap belt.

And for the stylish hat too!!!

Did you hit many rocks up at Skyline Divide?  How's the new snow bonding with the older snow?
Yeah, a totally great day to be a part of.  Many props to Murray on his ski strap belt.  Pics on picasa:

I think we successfully "unanchored" many of the rocks from the snow.  Or at least so my bases tell me.  Careful of the light snowpack out there still.  More snow coming next 3-4 days it appears.
Anyone going up this coming Monday for a repeat?
anyone going up next MOnday?  go for the repeat?
Right. That's what I thought. Too bad the skiing above the gorge is great. Thanks!
Lolob I did not go up on Tuesday (unfortunately). I found the photo set on Flickr, judging from the pictures the skiing was awesome. It also says somewhere that they were able to skin up right from the parking lot (as did TobyT) but not able to ski the trail all the way down.

Let's hope the freezing level stays low!
lol, yeah man, watching all this from my office as well :(
Eratta:  No slabs yesterday.  Just a lot (2ft) of nice new wind dep. pdwr on smooth ice w/ a poor bond.  Then a foot or less of nice rain melt/freeze snow over  finer grained (not rain affected) snow.
Aspect:
SE, 8kft

Rutschblock failure on the ice w/ a light step (3).

Yeah, we were whimps.  But we still are whimps, live ones.  I did not like a nearly1k run w/ the conditions we encountered.
So instead we stuck to mostly lower angled stuff well anchored w/ roc...
I just have so much hate.
A spectacular day! My first ski outing this season and my first time replying to a TAY partners wanted ad. I hope it's a taste of things to come.

Great meeting all of you!

cool, you gassed yourself!  Reminds me of back in the 'Nam era when in basic training they had us practice donning gas masks, walking thru a gas filled room, etc.  The last part of the exercise was to walk into the gas filled room, take off the gas mask, and stay there long enough that you would have to talk at least 2 deep breaths (not to mention saturation of your eyes, hair, skin, clothi...

Ran into Silas in parking lot -- he was mildy disappointed when I wouldn't join him in mooning Scottsman via the JVC webcam.

I have seen Silas's ass before... OK as asses go but not that spectacular.  Too much downhill AT ski instruction for maximum gluteus maximas development. ;)
Looks like great conditions. Well played.
Didn't know you were heading up with Murray today Silas!  Nice...  Looks great.
I was also up there with some folks from the WSTC -- we were headed to ski the Paradise Gl toward Cowlitz rocks, but found wind slab on an ice layer on the E aspect of the Paradise, so opted to ski gentler slopes on the Paradise and Pebble Creek south to above McClure rock.  The snow on the Paradise was pure ego boot top powder.  We then dropped down from McClure to the Golden Gate and Edith creek throught thin, crusty coverage.  I picked up some new gouges in my rock skiis on th...
Yes, that gully, or Swamp Cr. gorge as I call it, has very little snow in it. From memory, I think the base of the gully is near 3700'. I have traversed over from Twin Lakes in the past, passing under Bear and out to Goat, but I can't say that that would be doable right now...
How was the snow yesterday?  Looks like there is some more coming in the next day or two.  I was thinking about maybe heading up that way on Saturday if it doesn't rain up high.
has warren miller been sighted yet?

if you see a heli in march and cant get around, you'll know what's up.
Photos from yesterday (9 November 2010). Looks like the snow is piling up while the road is still driveable.
