Thanks for the skintrack boys.
The road up to Crystal was fine. Its still a little swampy around the little lake (hen Skin?) The snow was light and wonderful. Mark if you are out there it was great to meet you.

One of our party rode a slide for a hundred yards or so.  It was caused by another group a couple hundred feet above him.

Thanks for the report! It sounds as I imagined it would be. Figured we where missing out on some good pow condtions(I don't mind a rock or two). Ironically, the above quote was my main reasoning for not wanting to go to that area.
That sounds enchanting JW! No smoked salmon, just vacum packed tuna. Maybe that had something to do with it. No fresh smoked, but I still have about 10 pounds in the freezer from last year.

I am gonna try and make it Marcus. Kinda bummed, but I couldn't get a free weekend to go to the OEC refresh. the 12th isn't looking good either.

CBR was the place to be yesterday... SERIOUS downclimbing... ;)

Well done sir! Maybe next time we can stay down lower in the Icicle, where we will be guaranteed thinly covered slabs and rocks.  Or a posthole Enchantment traverse? Keep me in mind!

I hope the smoked salmon was good.
Sorry you missed out on the wet slab downclimbing -- I heard it was excellent and it may not come back into shape for several months, looking at the forecast...

See you at the OTH?
nice!!

I was considering a dawn patrol before work but didn't wake up till 8
Good one!

I am looking forward to a report....So I can make a good decision of were to go this weekend....

Thanks!
Yah right on, we know our way around up there. We were up on Saturday so we know where the rocks are/were. Thanks for the notes, we'll be treading very lightly before we step near anything. Conservative calls  for tomorrow, its still dumping!

we'll share back our results, play safe everyone!
Thanks again for the turns gentlemen!
My mistake, Silver basin and the gap above (I do not know the name).

nicely done, actually heading to those exact chutes tomorrow. Any snowpack observations? Sluffing, slabbing, windloading? Any natural activity in the area after the storm? How was travel up to the flank of table (deep I bet).

Any details would be appreciated, thanks.

Snowpack seemed rightside up to us, less wind affect than we expected.  Uphill tra...

Thanks for the response Snowolf - very helpful.

Meadows posted this today...

Thanks to everyone who's been up enjoying the snow the last few weeks. As of Thursday morning [11/18], we will be enforcing our "no uphill traffic" policy within the ski area boundary...
You are welcome to use hiking paths outside of the boundary, but please, no skiing down inside the permit area. We will have cats and snowmobiles on the slopes, so this policy is for your safet...
Thanks!

Lets hope for a good safe winter!

I feeel your pain after my recent trip to WA Pass for No skiing.
It's money in the karma bank... Kaa Chinnng.

Money in the Karma bank yes..and really... it's a good place to start from since things get better and better from this low point.

We drove up to Chinook anyway and took a few laps under the watchful eyes of the DOT people and a State Patrol officer, then bailed at about 11:55. The gate was closed but not yet padlocked at Crystal Mt. road as we drove out, we opened it ourselves and waved at the DOT guy . . .

well, you made it in before the DOT guys became snarky.

What a drag. The cat track back to the base must have been really thin. Were you able to ski all the way back to the base?

On a good note, it is snowing right now at Hyak 2,600' (8:51 AM Nov. 17th) and should shorten the drive for that fix soon( I hope).

Nope... 1 inch of snow below the base of Chair 4.  quite suddenly there was 10-...

thank you, it is a beautiful area

that rock wall is pretty much where you said, along the divide on the north side of Thunder Gl basin, just east of the 7242 high point
fear not, for white will soon be the new green  -  unschluctism

You have some great pics of one of my favorite areas, including those surprising ptarmigan.

I didn't know about the rock shelter you photographed. It looks like it is somewhere along the divide on the north side of Thunder Gl basin. Is it east or west of a direct route up from the hogsback trail?

The road to Paradise was blocked by old growth blow down.

Bummer. I have some favorite old growth, moss-back buddies along that road. Hope they're still standing.
I thought Meadows didn't allow touring/hiking/skinning.  Was the gate open or did you just get away with the poach.  Thanks and nice images.
Sure thing and great question.

After digging this pit and seeing the results, I would not have actually gone up into Superbowl itself. I stayed on the Moraine that separates White River Canyon and Heather Canyon and hiked to the 8500 foot level where it plateaus above the top of Cascade.

There was little choice to be made here since my route down was back into Meadows along Vista Ridge, not the Heather Canyon area. This is also where the best snow was. Had I intended to go...

What elevation were you at and what time of day did the slide happen?

We were around 5600 ft elevation and approx. noon for time of the slide.

TobyT - no pictures, but if you look on a map we were skiing off the small summit (6K elevation) south of Bearpaw Mountain and following the drainage that first runs NE and then turns N (heading toward and ending at...
I need education and have got questions for you.  After several decades of three-pin touring and some scary brushes with small soft slab avalanches, I'm finally getting onto AT gear and starting to head onto steeper terrain, and thus am much more concerned about avalanche safety.  I did avy 1 last year and read Tremper's "Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain" twice this summer.  I know very little about this topic and, except for avy 1 class, have never dug pits and analyzed th...
If I can get my friend with a big truck to come along then I'm all over it.  He'll probably be excited for the challenge.  It's worth a try.

What do you think, will the snow in the next few days be enough to cut off easy access to Skyline?

I would think so, as approx. half of the 14 mile road is above 2400'. But, you can always try and give an updated report!
What do you think, will the snow in the next few days be enough to cut off easy access to Skyline?
Where did you go up?  How far were you able to drive?

Did you go up Whistler Creek or to the end of the outlet of Bearpaw Mtn. Lake?
Just curious if you took pics of the slide, surroundings, or skiing?
Can't wait to use my free lift ticket courtesy of Warren Miller Productions. One thing that always makes skiing even better--skiing for free.
I was with Eric and what supprised me with the slide was we were continuously monitoring the snowpack and discussing slide potential but the snow wasn't "that slabby" and the different bed layers were not that clean.  We thought that yes there could be a point release on the steeper parts but probably not a slab.  As the day progressed  the snow pack settled and changed its bonding.
When the slab cut loose the crown line didn't propagate perpendicular to t...
Hmm,  that is interesting. I was up taking a few runs off table that morning. I did notice a couple of flat spots that had small wind slab like characteristics and there was obvious compacting as I skinned up. Other than that nothing moved while I skied or tried to kick things off. I left at 10am  and there was a big difference in the snow lower down by the parking lot. It was getting heavy and sticky about that time. What elevation were you at and what time of day did the slide happen...
Thanks ebeam.  We had a similar experience that day as we walked out from our northwest facing ski near there at similar elevation - we left as powder was transitioning to styrofoam - but just before crossing a rock rib on a 35 + degree NW facing windpocket, I popped a slab 10 inches deep that didn't run anywhere, but instantly shot a crack out to my partner 10 yards in front of me on the other side of the gentle rib, popped on the windslab around shallow rocks.  Not what we were...
nice report, thanks for the heads up
Thanks for this excellent writeup sharing your observations of variety in snow stability in a very small area  depending on terrain, wind affect, and sun.
Thanks. Think it my be visible now, but it's kind of a weak vid anyway.

No apologies needed! Given the spicy flavour of my remarks on this board, your skepticism was warranted.

Hey Ron,

The question was genuine. Your original post contains high quality obs, and I was just asking for some speculation I suppose, maybe on what you think would happen, general thoughts. Discussion, that sort of thing.

( If you were a mechanic, then I expect you would certainly have a great set of problem solving skills that would be an asset to these types of discussions. I'm a software developer, so I'm a mechanic too. I just work on virtual machines instea...
