Here's hoping I didn't dig up a bigger can of worms than I intended :)

Well by the depth of the snowpit you should not be surprised to have gotten a can of worms!  :D

It's always good to get back in the swing of things. Let's call it a look-see. It never hurts to get a pulse for the snowpack no matter what the case is.
Many ye...

What observations were you able to make from the test pit?

See 2010-11-14 Report HERE (click on :Search Reports" button at the bottom).
On Friday, the snowpack at Paradise was horrid chaotic styrofoam above 7k. Poor coverage in many places that had been scraped bare by the wind. Lots of sastrugi at places with maximum wind speed such as crests.

At the top of Pan Point, I saw an older skin track that had been excavated by the wind, so the tracks appeared to "float" above the snow. Didn't see any notable wind slab, likely because high winds had simply blown most of the snow to Kingdom Come.

In...

figured i'd post in case some folks may just be curious about the snowpack and levels low enough for the 'casual outing' from the lot at paradise.

Well?  I'm curious.  What is the snowpack doing?
I've worked as a volunteer for the NPS -- the sledding hill at Paradise is a frequent source of injuries -- even with only "inflatible" / inner tube type sliding devices allowed.  When I've worked as a volunteer, I listen to the radio chatter in the park -- it's pretty amazing the sort of antics that people engage it.  The NPS rangers take a lot of flak from the public, but they are also the ones the expect to help them out when the get hurt, lost, slide off t...
Great days Fri/Sat.! These posts sure brought people out of the woodwork. I guess the positive is that you can bank on a skin track being set when you show up. That is, until the snow level drops and it's a 7 mile skin in...
It was still good on Saturday 11/13.  We drove to the lake... maybe 2" of new overnight.  Snow got heavy by mid afternoon. We yo-yo'd the slope south of the lakes.  4 other groups and 2 snowmobiles up there.
Hi tele-lurker,  We were the group of two that met you at 9500'. Thanks again for a nice up-track.  Kudos for managing to hold onto your gear switching modes in that wind.  The rest of the way to Muir was nutty windy with constant duck and cover to stay on two sticks.  Good choice.

Zack
Welcome tele-lurker.
Thaanks for the report.
Silas, nice to see those photos bigger than on the iphone when you showed me yesterday. ski ya soon.
Now that Mother Nature has decided to wash away our powder high, here's a memory of the good times http://vimeo.com/16834612

The season is just beginning!
Sleds are harder to steer than skis (though I tend to ski as if I had two sleds on my feet!). Even in controlled circumstances, sledding=broken bones.
I talked with some of the rangers, they said they have never given a ticket to sledders, just told folks to go east.  They do, however, give tickets for pooches.
Sledding? I'm sure this has been covered here, but how do they justify banning sledding? How is it conceptually any different than skiing?
What observations were you able to make from the test pit?
One of these days I'll purchase a "real" splitboard instead of limping around on my homemade one (which is in repair atm).  Then I can be considered a "lazy" backcountry skier too.  ;D

It's probably just my poor skinning skills, but if there is a good boot track, (ie Muir or Sherman) I can boot it up faster than I can skin it.
they'll raise $ anyway, and anytime they can. apparently, yr-round positions

There is also something especially satisfying about getting out of your car and starting to ski right away.  ;D

Thanks for the validation of my long held belief on the sport of backcountry "skiing" versus "hiking".  I developed this belief in my late 50's and now being in my mid 60's I think I'm on to something rather novel.  :...

Where is this, and what highway is it accessed from?

North of Roslyn.  I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass, get off at Roslyn and head north.  Once you get past civilization and beyond the lake, turn left up French Cabin Road.  You hang a right eventually and continue to the end of the road.

Also known as, it's in the middle of nowhere. :)

Way to get after it on boot, there is something especially satisfying about marching up the hill on foot.  Heavy goods in Silver Basin, too.

Conversely, there is something especially dissatisfying about marching DOWNHILL with skis on your shoulder. Nice to meet you out there Link!
Police State Wilderness !!!!!!(to borrow a recent term.)

tell em you fear for your life in the bc and need spare parts. They sent me a nicely stocked bag of harware.  straps, rachets, all them funky screws flow uses....
Nice call!  I suspected Green Valley to be good, same altitude as Chinook Pass.  Good for you booting it up there.  Nice job on the binding repair.
If you want to be nice to your skins you can start skinning at the bottom of cat skinner....

It took about 3 hours to hike to the top of the Hortsman....At this elevation we found the good snow...

Maybe I should have been grunting louder going into every turn.  (Paul Parker reference).

Growling like a bear seems to improve my turns (at least when I'm skiing on Kodiaks).  I picked it up from a 4-year old kid at Snoqualmie with a bear-head mask on his helmet.

Congratulations, season-openers. Where does skinnable snow begin if you start from base 2 at Blackcomb. Whistler Creekside any better? Thanks, N
Glad you got some!! Sounds like its game on.
Thank for sharing Andy....

I told you it was going to be worth it....

We should have gone for the Alpine start like I suggested....(The last photo of Andy.....I think he was ready to stay up high and tour all night...Next time we will leave earlier than eleven thirty from base 2 of Blackcomb.

Think of how many damns there would be if there was no photo limit on this board.

The careful observer will note that the current guidelines are hardly being enforced.

The snow was windblasted in most places above Pan Point, with a lot of challenging inconsistency in the crust.

Wow, what a difference two days makes!   I knew we had a special day on Wednesday, you have confirmed it.
Good report Paul!  Great skiing with you, too.  I could have done with more of the lower snow and less of the upper snow.  I did alot of thrashing due to the windpacked layer.  But I guess that's what happens when I try to ski with the upper crust.  ;D  But for all the faceshots (plants), I escaped with no broken bones.  Only my ego is pretty bruised.  And you're right - from Pan Point down it was beautiful!  It's amazing how much new snow the Paradise area got while we were up in...

Nice, Paul... :)

One of those days to pay heed to Ron and Jeanette's mantra, why pass up good snow for better? Still, kind of sweet to end a fun day in the sun with preserved powder and snow flurries. A perfectly pleasant finale!

And good chance...
BTW we 3 found similar conditions on the N face o Yakima.  Even the S side, in the trees back to the car was still pwdr!

Maybe we should, to protect ourselves from ttipsters, TGReaserchers, and other Negative Nelsons? ;)

Actually I counted 16 people plus our four, dunno how many were TAYers besides Jodabaker, snoslut, dromond, tim_place, myself and eli.  We saw four alpine skiers booting up, kindly staying out of the skin track, now that is tough!
