ride back down the road with ollie (friends border collie)
Thanks for the video; nice work!
Jeff,  Very nice TR and video.  That was a beautiful gladed run.
Great photos.

My son inlaw and 2 of our sherpa in training grandsons( 11 and 8 years) were at Wildcat on Monday in the storm and returned on Tuesday to find a tree knocked out power to the mountain.  They headed to Atitash where they were stranded on the chair for 30 minutes in the blizzard.  They had a great time and were unsuccessful in convincing their mom that it was fun sitting on the chair and ripping down the powder trails.  Ahhhhh, these 2 guys have the right genes.   ;)
Love it. Great to see some new England stoke. Don't think I've ever had those conditions at cannon. My former home Mt is just down the road frm cannon, Loon Mt.
Scott John Doe McMuffin last I heard.
But Scott...  (ale that is) Isn't your name John?
I will leave you this hint.

This person is roughly in the right area.  A quick look on a topo map should clue it in.  I have now been there two times and have yet to see another track, which based on how good it is and where it is, is nothing short of amazing.  That said, it is very short laps (700-800 vert MAYBE and is very rocky but it has plenty of great cliffs from 5 to...
Gnar is filling in nicely but the approach is still a maze of creek crossings.  The 20+ inches over the last 4 days should fill in the approach somewhat but the amount of water running in the creeks is huge!  If the winds would abate there will be more options but for right now Newton is a solid choice.  Hey that secrete stash looks like fun... where is that exactly?

Like I said Savegondor.... most of the time I'm just hoping for the best . But seriously... I'm not saying a pit doesn't give some useful information( if dug in the right place which is sometimes very difficult) but what I dislike is dogma and the belief by many that digging a pit on every tour or even every slope is a necessity and that those that don't are somehow unsafe or reckless and more importantly that if you do you are a now a paragon of knowledge and safe.

Well Savegondor I can assure you I'm not lazy and I don't want to die in an avalanche and regularly ski with my son and friends and don't want them to die either so I take avy safety very seriously but have never being inclined to dogma either.

When I first started BC skking and for several years thereafter, I read my avy report, even took a copy with me and  dug pits...
Nice! I have enjoyed a turn or two in the Newton drainage. Yeah, this rain today is a serious buzz kill...hoping the cold front moves in sooner rather than later!
Thanks for the TR and review of the conditions, although I am sure the snow conditions have made a turn for the worse today with the warmup this morning.  I have been wanting to go ski in that area but have never taken the time to get up there.  Looks fun.  I made the treck up Gnarl Ridge (1 ridge east) last year and found good turns, although the approach was a bit longer. You can check out the report at http://riversearch.blogspot.com/2010/02/mt-hood-back-country-skiing-gnarl-ri...
Don't let redshift's obscure comment confuse you. we are both Scott, but he is not I, and I am not him.

Funny, I have been out with every Scott in this thread. there are at least 4 counting me!

Nice work on Red guys. The mountain, not the shift.  Looked really good in the picture Ryan posted a few days ago.

Scott.

ps.. I am going to start a discussion elsewhere about the Colorado guys coming.

Seriously? Snowolf and Passenger sign off and no one has anything more to add about BC avalanche protocols in the PNW in the last 24 hours?
Looks awesome Jeri! We are expected to pick up 4 feet by Wed at Mt Hood Meadows....Busy week with the holiday and I am instructing every day..... Let's try to plan on a split trip next week!
I was across the way at Yodelin and the snow was equally as great and stable.  Great day all around.
I will shed a tear when they finally get the Hyak lifts running again. I have taken full advantage of the short drive and easy access of Hyak this season for some maximum fun/effort ratio skiing.
Nice work. Yes, it was great snow today. We(nomad, not me) broke trail up the road and never seen nor heard a soul all day.  only a couple sets of ski tracks on our exit run down to the old highway.
no, this is the one that starts down by the gravel station...just a bit past the nordic center.  You went to skyline and/or Heather Ridge.
is this the tour from that snow road that starts in the parking lot accross the street from stevens? I think we took that same route, thanks for breaking trail. snow was blower today!
Heh heh.  Compared to whom?  Methuselah?  The name for that, Todd, is "damning with faint praise."  You'll get yours.
the route courtesy of my htc evo.
Mark, as I remember, you pack a pretty good track with a fine eye for the most efficient route... you aren't that old compared to... Moses!
Would you consider getting an early start Thursday to renew your uptrack before I arrive?  I'm not getting any younger.

Thanks for the report.

Nice!...did Gary tell you, I picked up the Voile Mojo RX this year? Looking forward to hitting the BC with you when he comes back up Jan....looking for some new cool places to tour and this area looks pretty incredible from the multiple TR`s I have seen.
T'was me, Redshift the obscure.
Assuming you didn't ride the lifts, where did you go yesterday up there?
Nice call Michael & Brenda.
We say your car covered with snow at Narada; figured you were out there having your way with it :)
Nice TR: Jeri.....

BTW.... This is Scott from snowboardingforum.com

was the Scott that you hiked with none other than Ale Capone by chance?

I wish you would keep my name out of this .

;D
These are the trips that make the good bluebird ones just that much better!
Snowolf... listen to Shaman. Your voice is important and as John Wayne once told Barbara Walters..... "don't let the bastards get you down"...( true believe it or not... look it up.) Grow some thicker skin and suck it up. We need new members in the club.... even soloists. ;)
I learnt a lot from the discussion and Skykilo( albeit with a "cough") agreeing with me on a point means Christmas miracles are possible. ;D
I was touring on that middle morain last year on what seemed like consolidated snow but ended up setting off a pretty good sized slab avalanche.  The crown was only 2 feet tall but it was almost 100 feet across.  Luckily it was very slow moving and even though I got carried I never got buried.  Sounds like people are being safe and digging pits and such, just thought I'd mention it because it was quite a wake-up call for me.

One of my favorite tours is up a side a...

So, in the interest of not upsetting the apple cart here, I will peace out now and leave you folks to your own club. I can post trip reports on splitboard. Com without creating a firestorm.

I am sorry it has come to this Snowolf.  Since moving south from Bellingham I have found myself touring solo quite often.  I would prefer not to, but most of the peop...
I have also learned that a lot of skiers think they are much better skiers than they actually are.
I wish you would keep my name out of this .

had you done the ski cut you might also be dead.

I realize that I am not going to change your belief system about pits and ski cuts. But digging in to a certain belief hardly cast the image of being open to as much information as possible. Maybe, quite possibly, if there are so many experienced BC travelers that hold the contention that ski cuts are a good idea,...
A good discussion was attempted to be nipped in the bud by the moderator.  Perhaps T-A-Y needs a re-evaluation of its policies on frank discussions.  The moderation is personal opinion inserted with the earnestness of a school marm.  PNW social correctness rears its head...  a good way to encourage group think, especially in regards to avi considerations.
Here's one of Regine from last week (21 Dec, back bowl, no one else around except GaryV and Ed doing a tour down Mazama Ridge):

had you done the ski cut you might also be dead.

BTW Happy Holidays to all!
Not all science is exact and perfect. I get what you are saying about utilizing as much info as possible. I can't tell you the amount of geophysical projects I worked that were cut and dry science according to the engineers and ended up being a cluster of additional costs due to broken science.
too bad we missed you.  i was up there that afternoon and can affirm that the snow was quite nice.  snowed about 4" on dave's car at the alpy maintenance lot while we were skiing.
Snowolf and Passenger – this lurker begs you to stop the sniping!

We finally have an interesting and fruitful dialogue going in this thread that transcends an inconsequential TR about Hogback or a sideways reference to Shakespeare. Passenger’s first post was inflammatory, no doubt: but look at the result. People are re-assessing how they approach safety in the BC and that’s what’s important, so good on ya for that. Revising what you originally wrote over and over in an at...

too many self appointed "experts" acting as the thought police trying to mind everyone else`s business down here. When you are not out yelling at the kids to get off of your lawn, I bet you are the guy in the left lane of the freeway trying to control everyone else`s speed too...... ::)

High five Snowolf.
