Did that same tour last weekend. We spent a night just NW of the North peak. You definitely got MUCH better weather, we once saw a glimpse of blue sky between the snowing and blowing. But the snow was great!
Another view yesterday on our way to Roosevelt...
Sweet!  Nice work.  Still looking wintery up there.
Another beautiful day coming up in the Sierra on Monday:

NWS Reno: AN ANOMALOUSLY STRONG JET MOVES INTO THE WEST COAST SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY WITH 700-500 MB WINDS 3-4 STANDARD DEVIATIONS ABOVE NORMAL. RIDGE WINDS IN THE SIERRA WILL BEGIN TO PICK UP SUNDAY WITH GUSTS PEAKING ON MONDAY ABOVE 100 MPH. AN INCREASING SURFACE GRADIENT WILL COMBINE WITH THESE STRONG UPPER LEVELS WINDS MAKING MONDAY A WINDY DAY ACROSS THE REGION. HAVE CONTINUED TREND OF RAISING WINDS THROUGH THIS PERIOD WI...
Beautiful photo.  A great day in the mountains.
Looks like a beautiful day for touring.  Nice TR, photos and video clip.
so, is that a first ski descent of the full length of the route (with rappel)? maybe it's a stupid question but i've only heard of sky sjue skiing the upper face and bailing due to conditions. any other record of ski descents? lowell? very jealous btw, nice job.
Sweet trip Oyvind ... living through other's TRs this week.
Nice Oyvind, thanks for the report.  Dave was trying to lure me along yesterday -- glad you got the good weather.
Just plain awesome.  Thx for sharing.

I'm very sorry to hear of David's death. I didn't know him well, but I went to school at UW with him and always felt we had similar personalities. I admired his unconventional way of thinking.

The road is Marble Mountain snow park will re-open to vehicle traffic on Friday, April 22 at noon.

Thanks for the report Spantik.
There is about 3' of snow at the Silver Star gate. Gate is closed , and clearing underway , so skiing up is an option. Be aware that D.O.T. crews  are working  M-Th and may halt your advance . Please respect there directive.   Thanks   ,   X
Did you ski up from the east side?  Just wondering where you hit snow.  I biked from the west side the other day just to see how far in i'd have to bike and still hadn't hit snow a mile shy of the easy pass trailhead.
Great!  Been looking at that one on the map for years

hoping it would soon part.
suckered us onwards,
things sure look different in near whiteout,
could not see drop-offs right next to my skis,

Classic ... and all too familiar to my few experiences out there.
Glad you lucked out with the weather, and found sun and powder up there unexpectedly, Carl.

Just a heads up to others though: that powder is ALL GONE. Skied from Muir yesterday April 20, no powder left, all breakable trap crust. Not really skiable, except by long traverses linked by cautious turns.

Better snow above 9500 ft (solid supportive frozen crust) and below 6400 ft (inch of softened snow atop firm supportive crust, decent turns). But the middle 3000 vert was nasty c...
Your first TR on TAY last week... and now you're gone, Dave... hard to believe.

Here's the text of the news story that has the most details:

Rad!  Is that a plastic shovel in pic #2?  Good work guys!
HAHA - Low Hanging Fruit.  I tell you, I used to eye that stuff outside of Chelan/Wenatchee areas when I lived over there, but you'd have to deal with cattle fencing to get there.
That's a great pic, Charlie.  I was on that trip to Chikamin; it was his parting ski tour from Seattle.  I wish I could dig up pics of him skinning in the valley in his 1-piece black Lycra suit, it was hilarious.  He certainly had a unique way of making people laugh.

RIP Dave.  Hopefully you find whiter pastures beyond the journey down here.
Agreed on photo #3. Steep face that rolls off steeper to empty space :-)
Pure awesome. Photo #3 is perfect.
Thanks! incredible,....

Why isn't there someone out there doing documentary filming of this kind of thing? Perhaps, I am obsessed with both skiing and the mountains in general, but I am intigued by every aspect of this kind of adventure. I find it inconcievable that there is not market to produce and broadcast this type of ski mountaineering on film.

Instead, our television gives us a bunch of pimple face kids with their pants falling down, holding up cans of 'M...
Oh man... what the hell?  I didn't know David at all, but I'd just started to  in the past couple of weeks, through email.  So sad... So sorry for the loss of friends and family.  Thanks for sharing that, Lisa.
:(. Thank you for passing along the news, Lisa.

I'm still thinking this through, but these things spring immediately to mind: David has for years been a major contributor to the effort to measure precisely the difference in mass between tritium and helium-3, a measurement with important ramifications for our understanding of neutrinos.  The other is this
Jesus Dave, I just heard the news.  What happened, I don’t understand?  Why you were here and now you are gone.  I am struggling to understand the devastating news of your death.

You have achieved what few will, a Doctorate in Physics.  I salute your scholastic achievement in the realm of Physics and your continuous pursuit of perfection;  as well your love of the mountains and the pursuit of happiness in all that you set out to do.

You will be missed by those who’s liv...
Pic #5 is T-tips worthy for sure.  Send it in.
Thanks for the report.  The Quilcene Ranger Station told me 2 weeks ago someone had driven to 4 miles or so from the south TH.

What I found was large orange and white standard hiway issue ROAD CLOSED sign that spanned most of the width of the road.  There was green colored tape on each side of the side to block the rest of the road.  There was a big white handwritten sign that said NOT PLOWED.  If there's more to it, it wasn't stated.  I doubt there's anything more to it.

They stopped plowin...
Looks awesome Freebird can't wait to make it up there.
I agree with you JJS, those fees are bollocks.  Mt St Helens National Monument is Federal Land, collectively owned by the people.  Charging someone $22 to walk through their own backyard is ludicrous and very much unconstitutional.

If you're directly benefiting from those fees, for instance, being able to make use of posh lodging/restroom facilities, or receiving expedited rescue services, (should one be needed) with tea and biscuits provided, are some exceptions.  If, h...
Nice work guys!  Man i miss Nevada!  Love those patches of snow in the desert and the sunny skies!

Sounds like you used to live here.  I've been here 3 years now and used to live there.  I sure miss the desert and sun, but i sure can't complain about the skiing here.  It's been awsome!

Check out the East Humbolt range, go there now it will be sweet and you will be all alone!

Cheers, David.
Fantastic stuff, amazing line, well done sirs!

Dumb question: it's closed due to a gate closure not because of unplowed snow, correct?

Maybe if we say we're planning to log the area they'll unlock the gate?  Having just bought some passes this is pretty annoying.

Could this be a result of the Warming Hut fire?

what?  I was up there last month!!! did somebody burn down the warming hut?

and I completely agree with all the posts.  if we pay fees we can expect to get something for them.

Thanks for posting.  I was planning to go there in the next 2-3 weeks.

The first indication that the road was closed was at the road closure barrier.

Sounds to be the case.  No information's available concerning the gate's open date?
damn impressive backyard skiing guys.
you buggers!  had my eye on that for a while now...
well played, nice timing.
