Good stuff Kam!
Thanks for the report!
@Ron -- my house is at 4902 ft., but we rode down to the Truckee river and lost about 400 ft., then climbed back up to about 7800 ft.  The JOM = 30%.  That's more than what I wanted, but it was fun.

We miss being back in Seattle and helping you guys with the class.  Maybe we'll stop by for a surprise visit when Norie gets on skis in a few years!!

Here's a link to the movie I made: A Mogul Missi...
Welcome to TAY Alan.  And thanks for taking such great pictures.  And Happy, Happy soon to be 60 birthday.  You are officially an old codger!
Great report Toby.  Have to put this on the To Do list.  Looks outstanding.
Sure is nice to see the sun and corn snow in the same place at the same time.  Photo 5 of Joe skimming and inch or 2 of cream looks effortless.  ;)
Sweet, Kam...
Questions:
1. Elevation at the top?
2. Joy-O-Meter ratio?

We're starting this year's Glacier Travel/Crevasse Rescue classes tomorrow. Wish you and Ally were around to help. Always enjoyed working with you...
The topic of the "Crevasse Angels" came up at the instructor training sessions :)
Yah you are right.....A Stevens pass toque....I won it as a prize at one of there events, now it is almost welded to my head...

Cheers!
Fun....

Are you riding a Voodoo....I had that bike!
That corn looks sweet!  Wish we had some up here.
Nice work!  The year of the Couloir!
We were up there today as well.   There was even a  Storm Trooper sighting (and dog).  Don't normally post Hyak trips, but this one was with a babe in tow, a fun diversion from the norm.

Good exercise none the less.  Experienced the same at Hyak yesterday.  Time for some clear nights to suck that moisture out of the snow.
Hi Chuck,

We were up there yesterday in the Oregon mist, (missed Oregon hit Washington).  It was raining lightly and the ski down was a foot of heavy, wet, mashed potatoes that was so sticky at the bottom you had to follow your skin track or push with your poles.
Glad it was better for you.  Maybe I'll catch up with you at Alpy next weekend, it may be the last for them.

Wishful thinking Mack,

Your Bailey pics capture my attention once again.  Carrie looks sooooo good.

Yes it does Joe  .........

STATS: 8000', three runs, and about 14 hours.  Lost snowboards: one.  Not mine  ;D.

Strong work fellas.  I wouldn't mind hearing the lost snowboard story...
Welcome back and thanks for the report.

Glad you got out Mack.  It's good to know that someone is taking advantage of the phat snowpack up there.  The chute sure is full.

I know better than to ask for pictures.  ;)
Nice Mack,
I was wondering about Ellinor today as we were doing laps at the Ridge, glad to see you went for it. If you want some company on a future trip, let us know.  ;D

Gary and Jan
Way to get after it Mack.

I am still looking forward to skiing ONP with you one of these winters...never skied there.
Similar in the side-country across the road. Some spots were smooth velvet with the new snow though. Really had to point it and not let your back edges sink in. Crazy jump turns helped in the trees. I'm really glad I brought my AT setup and not my Tele today.

this area that is so familiar to most it must be boring. ....Fun!

never. ....always!

I can't get enough of the lichtenisms either...

napeequa is a place of interest for grizzly habitat  .. there have been unsubstantiated sightings there .. by unsubstantiated i mean they need documentation .. photos of the bear would be awesome .. but pix of tracks are helpful too .. in dirt would prob be better ..

we were further north .. we know they are out there .. it's just a matter of time b4 they are caught on camera ..

when placing cameras in the bc we are actually carrying bear lure along too .. it's a...

It will be quite a while before one can drive to even the lower TH, but there should be good touring for months.

I hope so.  ;)

Great TR and photos.  A unique photo of the bears. Welcome to TAY young man.  ;)
Nice descents, Jay.  8)
That hockey haircut looks like a Stevens toque!

What's the chances of spotting Andy riding a bicycle around Whistler?
Gulp....!

Maybe smokied salmon isn't the best snack to pack up the nap...eequa

We saw no bear tracks in Franklin's above noted 'day's before'... We did see numreous very large bear tracks in the same area two weeks prior. Very active.

I'll have to send Nick a message and ask his opinion. He was the group tracker, but none of us voiced that they could be griz tracks. ... Maybe he took a photo.

Would black bears and grizzly...
Thanks for posting and welcome to the site Alan. Looks like a great trip, I'd love to get up there.

Here is a photo from last spring on a tour relatively near Easy Pass off Hwy 20. That mitten is 12" long so that puts the tracks at about 14" x 10" or so.

That's my boy! ;)
Yes you are correct stoked. Crossed over above the confluence. Its fairly obvious where to cross as the creek comes closer to the trail in that area. I went over that ridge lookers right in your pic. Midway up that ridge is pretty steep and poor for travel and tends to slide as well given the amount of debris I saw fyi. I'd stay away from the creek proper down lower there.
Great to hear from you Lisa. I'll definitely be up around Seattle some this year. I hope to be up Shasta before June, but I think a few trips this year are in order there!
Good call on Emerson.  Looks like you nailed amazing conditions.

If you were up by Little Morrison on the 12th, we probably passed each other.  (I did an early lap in Old Man's Bowl with the dog.)
Good one....Thanks for sharing.....

Now you have me jonesing to go back to the Eastern Sierras.... 8)
+1 on the dirt road being the crux of the approach for Emmerson and Wahoo. Half the lines in these photos are accessed out of the same little dirt pull out at the top of the Buttermilk Road loop, which is just outside of Bishop off of CA 168. The hike/ski is not that long but the drive is easier with some clearance.

I'd get a copy of Backcountry Skiing California's Eastern Sierra by Mingori and Greenberg - all these areas are in there, and there's good information on ad...

I skinned up the road and up cedar creek to huckleberry creek via some ridge to its west.

Did you go up Huckleberry Creek from the confluence with Cedar Creek?

I took the shot below from Doe Canyon looking up Huckleberry Creek (photo center). Sandy Butte on the left, North Gardner in clouds behind and Cedar Creek road is the little horizontal gash to the...

I agree, great pics. Been 23 years since my summit of Mont Blanc, and the summit ridge photo made it feel like it was yesterday. Thanks!

gary .. are you reporting those tracks to the state and/or nps biologists? .. did you get pix? we've done some griz camera placements in the nc for conservation nw .. so was just wondering ..

I reported the first incident and talked to the Grizzly/Wolf Re-introduction folks. I didn't take pix but three of us observed about 20 tracks that were obvious. I mea...

Thanks for posting, FreeBird.  Nice tracks!  You two are certainly fast & smooth.  I doubt we'd have had the energy for repeat runs without your trail-breaking.

Thank you guys for breaking trail.  The trail-breaking that you two did was the hard part.  The wind packed snow up high was much easier to brake through.  I don't think we would ski...

WMC. The TR states that they chipped away at the berm and made it to Stafford Cr. So, head on up! "Extended road closures" apply to damaged roads. Take a pic of the logging if you go. I would like to see how your proposed closure area looks now! Maybe some roads go higher on the North side of the river...

Yes, understood from the first, thanks. I called Cle...
Nice morning for sure Andy!

Got started right at 6am and trail breaking wasn't too bad if a little heavy for the 1st 1K.  I kept it in the trees up to the open slope around 5200ft and stuck with the plan to turn around and lap the 15"+ new from the last 24hrs.  Skiers right on the skin track was deep and creamy back down to ~4K and no feeling of the the crust on lotus 120s.  Breezed back up to the same turn around spot for another on the heels of 3 tele skiers heading for t...
I was going to suggest that.  We're neighbors and never have skiied together.  Your 3k limit and pace suit me just fine - and I would get to poach your local knowledge - WIN !

btw, given your 'government shutdown watch' rant (X2, btw) last week, not sure you should be expecting that check...    ;)

I hope we can hook up.   We're out of town for a few, though..     dg
First off, drool...N Emerson is high on my list.  Is it as a steep as it looks at the top?

Secondly, the towns you want are Bishop, Mammoth, Lee Vining and Bridgeport.

Third, the approaches are cush.  Many trailheads (at least the ones that begin at lakes) get plowed out for the trout opener the third weekend in april, so you can literally step onto 3-4 feet of snow at the car at 9,000.  There is very little brush to be found, even when things are melted out...
So where do I drive to (towns
& trail-heads..yah, and how "epic" the approaches...thanks..)?
author=TobyT link=topic=20495.msg87495#msg87495 date=1302883487]
Cascadian "variation" as per Becky guide would be a better description. Correct me if I am wrong.

I agree, looks like the S Shoulder, not the Cascadian.  I'm jealous in either case!
wo, cool!

were the approaches as epic as the lines?
