McCall Mt (5760’) (White Riiver, Napeequa Crossing)
April 9, 2011
The ridge snow was mushy. On the way down passed a very fresh deep Bear track.
How big was the track and did you notice if the claws extended well past the toes? Griz's have very extended claws and the toes are relatively straight across. I spotted a 9-1/4" by 10-1/2" Griz tr...
PSA: Per calls to Cle Elum RD yesterday and today (509) 852-1100, the NF Teanaway Road is closed at 29 Pines. Some of us wanted to go up there to ride in and ski but do not really want to snowmobile over a mile or two of rocks to get to the snow. If we ever get a good weather stretch we may go self-powered overnight.
Apparently, there is an "extended Road Closure on Naches District and Cle Elum District Roads", "there is not money to fix Road damage." Also, "t...

Awesome....Great day!
Thanks for sharing the story!!!
Thanks for sharing the story!!!
Photos I've seen so far show some pretty junky snow with a fair bit of wind damage. Bishop has 60 mph winds forecast again today. The strongest winds I've encountered there broke the anenometer at Rovana with 120 mph plus. At camp my tent was the only one still there and that was because a tree fell on it. I spotted a number of tents later, though....hanging on barbwire.

You guys = rad! Great spending time with you & Friends of Monika this weekend. Truly an amazing group of people.
Great to see you're out trimming off the extra lbs. Looks like we could have a great spring!
Dear Amar Thanks for your comments about us. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEVf2ujk7sQ

Great TR and photos. Keep the reports coming. I love touring the Eastern Sierra. The last photo has a nice view of Laurel Mtn. at 11,400' in the background with the Mendenhall Couloir,4000vf, which is a dogleg right from a skiers perspective.
If you want some beta on the Heather to Lichtenawesome traverese, give me a holler. Nice day with several small summits then Lichtensweet itself.

Great to see the mountain covered with so much snow. The glacierrs must be happy. Predictions on when we might see the Nisqaully will reach the bridge?
Very nice. I love that run and the views from the top.
Amar,
It was nice to run into you again. I was in the group of two around 8500 on your descent... we were heading to Muir for a summit push if the weather held. Of course, we woke up to it blowing and snowing... which you (I think) predicted.
Anyway, glad to see you still taking beautiful photos.

Nice work! Looks like it was a beautiful area to explore.
I think the reason it doesn't get much traffic is because it's steep, committing and risky. It's actually one of the easiest big routes to get to ("athletically"), at least later in the season.
The second to last shot looking up the headwall is awesome! Drool..
Nice tag! Some of that snow looks amazing.

This is such a great line, I'm sure it would get a lot more traffic if not for the relative remoteness. You have to be pretty athletic I guess.
Not to contradict you, but it's almost shocking at how easy it is to get to this descent. Of course, like you say, it's all relative. That would be a burly ground up ascent mid-winte...
Ryan, I'm sorry for your loss.
This is such a great line, I'm sure it would get a lot more traffic if not for the relative remoteness. You have to be pretty athletic I guess. I was really drooling at it once when I ascended part of it in winter conditions a few years ago, but it is steep enough that I would personally prefer to descend in such many-feet of powder. I don't like to ski when there is a lot of stress about self-arrest.

great effort ... awesome line .. beautiful scenery .. touching story ..
DKoelle,
As there was only one other group we saw, I'm assuming it was you gave me the dried apple slice? I appreciated meeting up with you at the bottom of the valley and your insights on the skin track across the valley to the Lichtenberg trail... I think you've inspired me to make that car to car trip.
Cheers!

Nice job, that looks amazing Ryan!
When someone posted that picture last week I was like, wow, the headwall looks good!

My first rhubarb struedel ever.
That is the best desert in my book with a glass of ice cold milk.
Have a great time, stay out of trouble now Silas!
I'm jealous, that looked like an awesome day!
Nice run, nice struedel....is that coffee for the jet lag?
Now I know why you didn't answer when I PMed you about sking at Stevens Sunday. 8)

Amar, the snow conditions were excellent throughout, except for the section between the 3rd and 4th dot in my photo. Alpine Ice. Had a chance to converse with my Maker there ;-) Pretty nice fellow actually. Interesting views on nuclear energy and tax reform.
The Coleman was extremely filled in and the snow was dense enough to where we had powder for skiing and never much more than shin deep trail breaking. Up high. Down lower (below 5000') the snow wa...

Awesome trip report!
I hate to drift your thread, but since you initiated it with the skins.
I find it weird that they responded by recommending the BD glue. Why don't they just improve their glue since they charge so much for skins?
I have had the same problems with the glue as they state and plan to reglue them with BD Gold when I see fit, but gotta do it before the spring slop otherwise they won't hold at all. I hope that I don't have the same problem as yo...

Skins -haven't had issues with my old skins (Pomoca & BD). I expect to maintain the skins, BUT was surprised to have a new skin act like it had nothing to begin with.
At home I hosed the skin and as a test three others (different brand, mohair, syn, mixed). All repelled the water except the speedskins, they soaked the water up.
The response from the mfg is, "...this is the first I’ve really heard of this issue". (regarding extreme water abso...

A great TR and photos. When I climbed and skied Mont Blanc, our snowpack was much fatter and it was about the third week of April. The climb up the metal steps/chain to the Gran Mullets hut is still very vivid in my mind. The building of that hut still amazes me. Even though we had a much fatter snowpack, I still remmeber the numerous holes and crevasses between the Gran Mullets and Vallot hut. Your summit ridge photo is great. Thanks for rekindling some memories. ;)
Talk about poor form. Come up to my backyard, ski an extreme line, write about it, attach lovely photos, and beautiful sentiment. Seriously Lurie, who do you think you are. You were neither hung over, nor did you join me for a drink after the ski. What a Ramses.
Fine work, Ryan and Eric. Nice TR and photos. That route is filled in so fat right now!
Ryan, it's really great to see that you're back in top ski-mountaineering form, and skiing a bunch of big lines this year throughout western North America, just over a year after your ACL tear.
I heard that you'd skied the Headwall, but didn't get a chance to ask you about it over the weekend (and forgot to yesterday evening). Any info on snow conditions, stability, e...

Nice one.I can't believe how much snow is plastered to the face.
x2.
Nice work getting a great line.
I think you misread my report man. Kristy unroped and soloed to the summit. I think she got tired of rope team antics and decided she was better on her own.
Nice one.I can't believe how much snow is plastered to the face.
Awesome work......Once again!!!!
Thanks Bram! Strong work, I may need some Sherpanis to assist me in making this trip. Kristy knows the way now, still needs to make the final hike from the Vallot?
Congratulations you guys, on a great line! I was waiting for this TR to come along.
I was wondering when we would see your first TR and surprised to see it so soon. To travel so far is for the true Euro experience of high peaks, fabulous food and the multi-lingual chatter that fills the air. Oh how I miss it. Share much, be safe and enjoy!
Hey silas, I did an overnight tour at St Anton there just last March. I hope you have a great time. Hope to see you again in the Mts or even Ivars someday!
Nice work one of the areas I've wanted to go to for a while.
Thanks for linking that Jake. I almost went up shelokum..looks like a beautiful way to go. I hadn't done my homework with this one. I just went off my memory and a quick look at google earth before I walked out the door. I did go over huckleberry ridge. I was tempted to drop off that sub-peak. The exit out cedar was with skins on...mostly a sidehill with only a couple blowdowns.
There is some great info further down this thread on the huckleberry creek approach.
