Definitely a trip report. Thanks for checking it out.
Great stuff!
Brings back many fond memories of my first trip "skiing" up there. I fell into one of those huge show chutes in the fog near lunch rocks and rode down 30 yards or so. I couldn't see a thing and remember hearing skiers whizzing by me at terrific speed and being terrified that I might get nailed. I wound up working up there at Camp Dodge for the YCC program and met my to be wife putting in the sewer system at the Tucks Lodge. My wife composed a song about ou...

Nice, I'm a big fan of the after work Alpy laps.
Did you see Nash at all? I wonder if the bumps from this weekend are filled in...that would be pretty sweet for spring corn.

SlipSlider- Amazing tale. Leather lace up boots, bindings that allowed a little lift of the heel, elevator shaft steepness...I can understand how an experience like that can stay etched in your mind. Most of the action was on routes 1,2 & 3 as impending ice fall and crevasses dominated the right side and the snow was spotty at the top in the center part on the day I was there.
Some beta on the runs.

Karl and Eric Blumhagen
mid 90's
207's
no axes
night night
With help from glenn_b and Karl Blumhagen, it has been determined that the point skied by Karl and his brother in the mid-1990s was a little left (south) of the true summit of Chair, as viewed from the thumb tack. They didn't ski the NE Buttress of Chair Peak....
SE facing slopes were starting to entrain snow if something got it moving. Still pretty solid all other aspects at the time of the trip.
Skiied north side of Kendall down towards Alaska lake. Safe on north facing everything else seemed sketchy, a lot of natural slides.
You guys see any action?

Thanks for the TR. Never seem to get back in season for Tuckerman's. been hearing about it my whole life.
Sweet!
you've created a tele- monster! no surprise ; )
Kev
p.s. all this after leading a great EMRU Avy rescue training session on Saturday - on ya.

I better get this out before the neurons finally fizzle out. Back in the olden days, I (and a group of other kids) was taken up to Tuckerman's on Easter weekend by an older friend of the family. I distinctly remember that it was the first year I had skied anything longer than the hill in my back yard. It sounded like a great adventure for a 14 year old boy, and (to this day) I do not know why my parents bought off on the idea.

Glad to hear you guys found some good snow. I'm looking forward to corn season up there.
We did a few laps at the Pass and enjoyed some good pow Friday night and Saturday morning.

From what I hear the whole Tuckerman Spring fling is the reason video cameras were invented.
Thanks for sharing those great moments in history.
Burning a Greyhound bus pretty classic stuff!
Hope your sister-in-law gets better too!
I have a hard time seeing Zap's freakflag flying as he jacks on the gas and the bike kicks his a.., only to get tossed over the bars.

Well written.
Kind of miss the flaming colors of the sunrise you don't really see in the PNW.

Awesome!
Been wanting to get up tehre. Point and stare up there for a split second everytime we drive by the tunnel. Kind of an anomaly how much snow that peak gets comparatively? Reminiscent of hemispheres on baker from across the way.

I am having a deja-vu moment...
My only atttempt ended somewhere around your snow cave with the same vertigo inducing white out. Probably should have toughed it out and dug in like you two. Our crew tucked tail and ran due to me wearing my sissy pants.
well done!

RADDD!
Sorry I didn't join you. Beautiful lines, though it appears you added a few coolers and several miles to the original plan? Way to take advantage of the good weather.
High fives all around!

Sorry so slow, I have been a bit disposed the past several days...
It was a great time, and I was very fortunate to be invited along by Eric. Very memorable experiance that won't be forgotten. Sadly, I am a crap photog and mostly have pics of the sky, and some actions shots of Erics ski tips in the corner of the pics. Everything good is very simular to what has already been posted.

That west face was looking so rad when we seen it recently. glad you got on it!

Noticed you live a bit east of Alpental. ;)
Yeah, I live 3 miles north of I-90 about 2620 miles to the east. But I do have a season pass.
Wow guys. Awesome. I wanted to get over there while in the area a few weeks ago, but weather and conditions weren't in the cards for us. Anyhow, that n face is always a fun ski. I'd love to do it in fatter conditions like you guys had....same for the west couloir. Nice work!
To be a little more precise, we parked at 2400' and started at ~10:30 a.m., according to the magic-locating-device.
Our track is attached, along with a picture of the lookout from the highest summit in case it helps.
Speaking of drafts, it was significantly windier than expected, especially on Sunday. Above treeline (~5400'?) the 4 cm crust still hadn't softened by the time we started our descent at noonish.
I was particularly {im/de}pressed...

We seem to be living a parallel line. I'm moving to the PNW as soon as the house sells.
Great, I enjoy touring with "young partners" who break trail.

If you were at The Bog launching yourself over the bars the memory lapse is understandable ;)

Thanks, Zap. How are you healing? And Jill's ACL recovery?
I suffered a setback by trying to accelerate my rehab. :( Hopefully, the snowpack will still be around later this summer. Jill's ACL recovery is long and still painful. She's working towards skiing again next season.
Keep posting the reports and photos, it keeps me motivated. ;)...

Being on main street in Lake Placid when the USA vs Russia hockey game ended in '80 rocked. Fun was also had at "The Bog" at the 1974 Watkins Glen Grand Prix when the Greyhound bus was offered up.
WOW, you're bringing back memories. I used to live in Syracuse,NY and made a few trips to Tucks for the skiing/festivities. A type of Slush Cup on...

^^^ The 2.5 mile, 2200'vert climb to the bottom of the bowl left me with only 300' of my daily max. vert. in the tank. In order for me to climb another 1000' of 45+ deg and have anything left to ski down was not in my universe without an overnight stay which is not allowed. Were I 30-40 years younger it would not have been an issue. When I max out my endurance, recovery is measured in hours, not minutes. A lot of the (younger) skiers there did multiple laps. Mountain dangers that...

Got just a partial one. Maybe Rich got some more.

OK, could you please post those beautiful photos of skiing
untracked slopes. ;)
Another great tour and photos. ;)
~2600', just before the Sibley crossing. Good shape up to there.
thanks for the report!

Nice, ever since my trip in January, I've been waiting for Silver Star to come in again. And waiting. I love that place, and during the next ice age it's going to provide Portlanders with fantastic skiing...
I would also be willing to take another poke at Silver Star and have some days free this week if anyone is interested in heading up.

Great pictures guys! Thanks for posting those since i did not have a camera that day. Truely an awesome day in the mountains. Once again the skiing was even better than i thought it would be.

Looks like it was very deep up there! Love the zoom of the elk chutes.

Dan used the word amphitheater to describe the basin with Maude, Seven Finger Jack, and Fernow towering above.
Nice! I'd agree with amphitheater but cirque works, too. It's an amazing view east from 7 Finger Jack down the glacier-carved valley. Thanks for sharing!
Ryan the Lion and E Money on a rampage.
The more, the better, right? Hope nobody is using a dialup...
