Looks like a wonderful day Oyvind.
Glad you got that Dave, and glad you're back on snow. Nice job.
Glad you're able to get back out there.

So is this the solution to the middle fork puzzle?  The pics of the upper mountain look pretty nice.  Way to go!
Awesome way to spend the day :)!
Great pictures Oyvind.  It is wonderful to share your passions with your children.  Glad it was a good day.
The cave (looks like a little bombhole) is just over Susan's left shoulder in the last photo - NW aspect, 6600', just uphill from where the summer trail hits the saddle. The ridge definitely sees lots of wind effect/loading/etc. The layer of sugar made cave excavation easier, once we found it.  Call it 3-4"? Susan spent more time tunneling along the facet seam and may have more insight.
Great photos.
It's nice to be able to look at all the far flung places. Strudel and all!
"4-7' down, we found ~4" of dry 2-3mm facets atop more solid snow"

Hey Charlie - what aspect and elevation were you at when you found this?

nice day out !  thanks for the report.
Chuck -- Great seeing you up there.  Sounds like you made the top -- though we didn't see you the rest of the day.  It was colder than it seemed judging by my frozen bladder hose that I left exposed to the weather while we were basking in the warm sun at Muir and enjoying a growler of Manny's that Bob was good enough to haul up.  Ditto on the skiing -- the reason to be out was the sun up high and a great workout.  Skiing was marginal.
Thanks for the report. I did this trip about 8 years ago. I've been eyeing this from Portland over the last several weeks between clear and cloudy days and we were planning to go up yesterday (Saturday) but we opted for a White River Canyon day.

Were you able to drive to the Grouse Vista TH?

I'm planning to go up there this week if you guys want to give it another go.
Thanks for the invite to an epic slog Koda.  Spectacular terrain, but such a shame that conditions did not allow for much skiing.  Next time i will bring shorties to drop the bluebag!  'Twas also nice to be serenaded by a pair of bald eagles.   On a side note: I probed the snow pack at a sheltered saddle at 4150' elevation, and failed to find bottom with a 250cm probe, or any firm crusts, yet 1500' down the mountain the snowpack is nil.  A link to more photos.  https://picasaweb.g...
Wow! Wonderful ski... hope you're enjoying your trip in Europe!
Regrettably we descended too late to enjoy the nice creamed up snow and were treated to various forms of "other" snow.  Fog was pretty intense between 8500 and 6000 on the way down so we stuck near the wands which didn't help matters.  Snow below Pan Point had gotten really heavy and turns had to be worked for.  Still it was really nice to see all the people up there enjoying the break in the weather.  Here's a couple shots.

There's a lot o...

Nice Gary!  Glad you guys had a safe trip.  I'm hoping my leg is healed up enough to warrant an escape from the desert to ski some oly corn in June!

Sounds like the Arizona sunshine is helping the leg to heal quickly. Looking forward to skiing with you again soon. Have you been working on your tan?  8)

Great work Jan and Stig, who pulled Bruce to the top :-)
Nice!  Gotta love it when you can take the family fun to the backcountry.  Way to slay Stig!
Well done, Jan.  My 12 yo preferred to lay about playing video games all day.
This is pretty far after-the-fact, but posted some more pics and brief TR here:

I want to ski this again!  With any luck this route will be good to go for months...

Hi Lisa!  The weather skunked our intended heli-supported trip, but we did enjoy some fine skiing on Plan B: Mts. Slalok and Matier, posted pics here...
Wow, that soft slab in action gives me the willies...  Thanks for the report Gary.  Anastasia was out in your neck of the woods last week, on Ellinor.  We still need to get together.  Maybe in the next couple of weeks?
awesome pix gary .. and dramatic too .. amazing how much fresh just fell since last weekend .. will it every end?
Nice Gary!  Glad you guys had a safe trip.  I'm hoping my leg is healed up enough to warrant an escape from the desert to ski some oly corn in June!
Hedonaut, thanks so much for the pictures!  I look out to Chikamin so often, it is great to get the reverse view for a change.

Gotta laugh at how small my little Hyak (and Catherine and Silver) look from that view!
I usually hate Star Trek, Next Generation allusions but you are strong.  Thanks for sharing(pics!).
For Silas, the Alps are where it's at.
The slopes are boney but the struedel is phat.
finally caught up and posted some pics.  thanks for vision questing, ryan--an odyssey with views.

hyak_erik, while this was a week ago already, there's a link here to a couple shots of the Alta perspective you were looking for...

We parked around 2500ft....It added about an extra hour and a half..(Before the usuall star at about 4000ft..I am not sure how many kilometers...
Thought I would tack on some more info to this thread.  We explored up Kendall ridge to above Kendall peak lakes today (Friday).  Found  4-6" of nice fluff on top a sturdy crust on N.W. aspects.  Anywhere the sun had shone there was generally multiple layers of wet snow with multiple crusts layers.  Looked threatening above treeline, lots of recent wet slide activity in sun baked areas.
I agree, for those without snowmobiles or legs of steel, how long was the road ski?
Thanks for the detailed conditions report!
this is very cool .. but would someone mind adding a little bit more info about the approach .. i know for you guys it's not about that and this is kinda lame .. but .. like how far fm the car do you have to go before even getting to the "trailhead" ?
Our objective, viewed from near Dusseldorfer Hut.
A couple more photos, always the Koenigspitze in view, beckoning us....

Why isn't there someone out there doing documentary filming of this kind of thing? Perhaps, I am obsessed with both skiing and the mountains in general, but I am intigued by every aspect of this kind of adventure. I find it inconcievable that there is not market to produce and broadcast this type of ski mountaineering on film.

I would love to capture these...
I am an old climber....I am not sure what Louie's affliction is......
We made our way up through the trees just as one early rising skier and his pooches came down. Nice powder above the trees - we thought better of going higher as the sun was out and there was meaningful sloughing on the ski back down. It got pretty wet on the open slopes above the waterfall. In the parking lot we met Judy - she who posted here a few months back about her Julbo sunglasses video contest entry - she won and got to ski with Glen Plake - interesting, another parking lot curiosity was...
Good one!

Thanks for sharing....Looks awesome out there!
Laps on Heliotrope would have been good for sure.....Somehow the Summit always calls....

Thanks again for the great skin track to the summit....

Cheers!
Yes I have wanted to time two good weather days (and stabilty) to get these done in two days....The North Face of Cheakamus was a good Bonus, especially to ski it in powder in stable conditions....

Can Am Challenge....
We crossed paths with you on your way down (we turned-around well below treeline as planned, partly due to time constraints, but also to avoid open slopes higher up). Stability in the open areas seemed sketchy as expected so avoided that terrain (though still ski-cut a few small rollers with no results).  Also, Shot 10 at Alpental looked like it slid naturally overnight (fresh avy debris-covered snow apron visible from the parking lot).

Nice morning for unseasonably good pow!

sweet line .. pure awesomeness .. congrats on the 1st descent
Confusion dispelled and rumors disconfirmed- congrats on an aesthetic first descent!
not silly at all... been looking for more recent local feedback, so thanks aj !
Condition reports, while lacking the sparkle of glory are still the meat - or at least the tofu - or let's just say the protein, of trip reports...
Thanks, Oyvind, Bigeo. It's comforting to know we weren't the first to suffer as a result of trying to be smart...

Think of what a difference another chair, to the bottom of the valley, would make, improving the vertical on C8 for day skiers and making the return from Shuksan so much more pleasant. Come on, Mt Baker owners, it's a small investment.

Surely, here it is: Chair North

Thank you! -  Much appreciated!
It was very similar on the Alpental side as of Tuesday (very early) morning. Soooo maybe just shy of a foot now on the north faces in that area?
Thanks for the conditions report, T.  Must've been good to get a morning burn.  Shoulda coulda woulda joined...sounds like it might still be worth a 1/2 day tomorrow or Sat.
I guess we'll just leave it in the realm of rumor for now- I was thinking somebody else might have more info. Seems like it's not my place to start name dropping non TAY members regarding rumors on the internet.
Mr Wild. Any chance of some photos??
My experience echos Oyvinds. I skied the WS twice last winter. The first time, I followed a distinct track that traversed from the clearcut into the trees on skiers right and quicky petered out. The downward traverse towards the bottom of the drainage got ugly, so I hiked back uphill, coming out near the base of C8. Back at the clearcut, I found wands and flagging that lead, more or less, straight downslope to the valley bottom. There was a group of Koreans working on a new route on Shuksan last...
