An email from a friend got me thinking about the preparation that went into this trip. Every parent has a different style, some very cautious, others leading their kids into some pretty wild situations. I'm somewhere in between. Here are some things we did before this trip, for what it's worth:
* Self-arrest practice at Mt Rainier
* Roped climbing practice at Magnuson Park (belaying, rappeling, prusiking)
* Theory of pulley systems (a school project)
* Snow cl...

I think we were headed down around 6:00. The altitude was kicking us a bit, and we definitely should have started up a few hours earlier to reduce the rock and ice fall risk on the ascent... there was a pretty big release right before we exited the upper part of the central face that would have been bad news 45min previously, and that was a bit close for comfort.
Arrived at the Cold Springs parking lot on Sunday afternoon (7-8-12) to a complete gong show. Cars everywhere and a steady stream of climbers and skiers coming off the mountain. Luckily enough people had left that we found a close parking spot. Headed up about 4:00PM and made camp at about 6500 feet. We spent the evening entertained by the crazy red sky and lightning show. Woke up at 4:30AM and out of camp by 5:45AM. Made the summit by 11:30AM. Skied back to Pikers and dropped the SW Chut...

You guys left just a little bit too early. One of the snow skaters doing his imitation of a human bowling ball down one of the west facing chutes. Thankfully he narrowly missed going into any of the holes that have opened up around the rocks :)

Hi Andy,
I was that skier - nice meeting you.
Knapsack approach still had fair amount of snow with a few short carries but definitely more sporty than the trail.

When I got my permit Saturday afternoon, the ranger said there were several hundred people on the mountain.
It looked like most parties were going to the summit via Sibley Pass. It looked to be in good shape.

Nice to meet and ski with you Pete.
To add to the population estimate theories for the South climb; I think Jason mentioned that when he got his permit at around 3pm Friday the ranger had told him that 80 permits had been given out by then. We arrived after the ranger went home as I am sure others did so I would place my bet on 150-200 or so.

How did the ridge traverse from Hidden Lake Peak summit to Sibley Pass look? I'm planning on doing it on foot next weekend. Any glaring obstacles?

Are the "SW Chutes" lines C & D? What to call lines A & B? Thanks!
C & D in your photo are the SW chutes, A & B are on the Avalanche glacier headwall.
to add to the conditions update- the White Salmon glacier on the west side of Adams skied very nicely this weekend, two obvious crevasses to cross but both had solid look...
Just heard from the guy who we met while he was hunting for the dog yesterday - they just found the dog a short while ago. It had finally returned to their parking spot and curled up under the car while he and his buddy were off hunting around the area for it. He's now busy taking down all the flyers he'd posted.
Was quiet up there yesterday. But sadly, some butthead exploded some sort of firework the day before (on the 7th) which frightened off some poor dog that was still lost as of yesterday evening (the 8th). Here is a link to a thread which includes a description of the dog, a link to a photo, and the phone number of the owner who was up there looking for the dog last evening. Way not cool. If the person who lit the fuse reads thi...
We skied a line on Adams on Sunday July 8 but I'm not sure what to call it. We skied line A in the picture, which was taken looking back up at Piker's Peak. Are the "SW Chutes" lines C & D? What to call lines A & B? Thanks!
Nice photos and thanks for the TR! How much snow is left below Cascade Pass, still enough to ski down to the road switchback or did you take the trail to the pass?
We saw you guys drop in on the back of HLP. Very nice turns. The west side had some great late day snow for the trip home. Sibley Creek drainage is still skiable to the woods, but that will go fast this week.

Nice work Lowell. I am looking forward to the day when I can introduce my daughter and son ski mountaineering. It looks like Tom had a great time.
Awesome! Saw your uptrack from the Russell on Saturday.

Nice meeting you.
Likewise, Bruce! Thanks for the great intel and hope to see you on the snow again!
Nice job! About what time did you begin your descent?
Good to see you up there, Jonn-E. Yeah, the Hyas Creek Glacier cirque was an oven. Randy and I were moving pretty slow up there. A breeze made it much better after we topped out on the ridge. Randy's line up the right side of the cirque was not the best line -- we descended 100' verts or so to get back to the right place, but not a big deal. That steeper slope up to below the E peak is unavoidable unless you go way left and do an oblique rightward traverse above the melted ou...
Climbed Adams on July 7th with probably well over 200 other folks, maybe even 300, anyway lots 'o people. Driving all the way to Cold Springs is not a problem, but being able to find parking was a little more challenging. On Saturday there were remnants of a couple snowbanks remaining on the road, but these melted significantly during the day and I'm sure after the warm weather on Sunday are now long gone. The chutes skied great at 1 pm- little sticky at the bottom.&n...
Mystery skier checking in. I don't know if you guys saw us turn around but we called it a day halfway up the Hyas Creek cirque. That bowl turned into a convection oven the likes of which I have never before experienced...simply unreal, and unpleasant in the extreme. We followed your tracks up the right side but were having a lot of trouble getting up the steep grade. I don't know if you remember me bitchin about my momix skins but they were not holding on to the...

fyi, we were there on July 6, and a lot of high-clearance vehicles had made it all the way to Cold Springs.
What?! No drop knee action photos?
Nice one Chica!

Good try, I'd love to see some photos.
Nice job Andy and Robert!! Way to get after it :D
That Chasm looks like this with snow. This is from 5/1/2011.
My absolute favorite trip up Baker was the one I did with my sons. Kudos to Tom. Sounds like he's got the family ski mountaineering bug. What's next for him?

The club I'm in is the Alpenverein: http://www.alpenverein.de/
Nearly every climber from beginners to pros is in that club. Being in thet club is about 60€ / year, but cheaper accommodation in shelters, insurances in case of alpin related accidents and a monthly magazine are included. In turn we don't know things like climbing passes in Europe at all. Even the best known peaks l...

Has the Black Hole opened up enough to be obvious from above? I was intending to get up there this weekend to check on the bamboo but had house chores to do instead. My plan is to head up there and remove the boo when it is no longer needed.
I recommend keeping the bamboo in place a bit longer. I don't think the hole is all that obvious from above yet.
I don't think there is anything better then skiing in the mountains with your children. Congratulations!

Cliff Mass has an explanation for the haze we experienced on Mt Baker--smoke from fires in Asia!

Here's a picture that shows the smokey appearance better:

Looks like a great cross-generational spirit integrating trip! Tom looks psyched, the weather glorious, and the mountain perfect for it. Thanks for sharing.
We did not ski The Chasm yesterday. In theory, if one could find a way in, it might earlier in the season, but it and the approach would be very prone to avys. If you've been up to Robin Lakes or the ridge between Paddy-Go-Easy Pass and Robin (Sherpani, Granite), you've seen The Chasm.

Cool route. Chasm looks fascinating.
I second that! I love creative routes and it looks like a great ski. Thanks for sharing Steve and Randy. That chasm looked barely skiable (was it?), but looks to be fantastic when filled...

I went there on Thursday and Friday and had a great time
Long live 'mericuh!
Great pictures, thanks!
How is the trail? Where is the snow line?
Great pictures, thanks!
How is the trail? Where is the snow line?
Went down the 7th. I dropped in around 11:45 on lightweight gear: pleasant for the uphill, interesting for the down. It was so mushy it had to be skied in a specific way, but I found if I was willing to pay attention to that exact style, the snow was actually pretty fun. After the mandatory "inny" and "outy faceplant" tele falls I adjusted to the middle. The stuff away from the boot tracks was predictable and only lightly suncupped. This was my first t...
