I went up to Paradise Glacier today and I could see all the Crown Royal tracks coming down the cliffs and across the crevasses! Maybe send it to Crown Royal rather than Dynafit :-)

You'll get no argument from me on that point, Aja.

You should send this picture to the local Dynafit rep, whoever that may be. Ka-ching!
Happy Birthday, wish my feet had been there to jump in the picture!
Bendite- are you talking about the Coleman Demming route with the Roman wall? Yes that should be fine, and is often skiable all summer. We rope up a in a few places skinning on the way up, but not on the way down, skiing down roped up is very difficult to manage.
Andy-yeah it was a little sobering to hear that too, like I said a good experience but it was very easy to see how things could go south in the blink of an eye.

Great Time, and natures firework show was the icing on the Birthday Cake!
nice first report. Pretty area. I've never been there, but your photos make me want to visit.
Thanks for the report--looks like a good time. Could you ski from the actual summit?
- I recently saw a guy your Dad's age, hiking the Mt Lassen trail (on his birthday).
Anvil Rock never saw this coming. Great day until Thor's hammer made us (most of us) make a hasty retreat out of Stevens Canyon. We almost escaped the deluge in time.
A whole bunch of people skied today Exciting video
We lunched on some of the rocks above the Nisqually
I've been that hungry. ;D
seems like good coverage still!
Thanks Andy
Thanks Andy
Squock looks pretty good to me! Did someone defy gravity?
Good indication of the coverage.
Thanks Andy.
Thanks Andy.
An update on the Paradise Glacier from this morning: Boring Video
Out of curiosity what would your usual reliables be this time of year? I'm going for my first 12 months of consecutive snowboarding and it seems like the next couple months might get a little interesting.

At 43 I am feeling my tolerance level for being scared seemingly lowered trip by trip.........
Oyvind - is it tolerance or adrenaline? I'd say if it's adrenaline, you get plenty of that doing the fine job that you do at EMR.
Nice! Zig Zag Glacier is strangely under-appreciated - at times there are loads of people crowding the narrow runs on Palmer, and you can ski a couple hundred feet over onto Zig Zag and feel like you're the only person on the mountain.
there was turns a little further from this spot a couple weeks ago.
sorry we missed you mark.
sorry we missed you mark.
The little bowl just west of Antler Peak still had a 600' clean run (except for a few loose stones on the surface here and there) on July 15, too foggy to photograph that day.
I'm planning on a presentation to Nordic club in Portland, possibly Mazamas. Invitation always helps
David
David
yaa, they think its funny to ski close/ spray someone, but they are clueless !
Wow! Surprised this isn't getting more press.
Yeah it looks like they did just for their own enjoyment. We might have to sue to get a presentation and all the facts
Happy you found the line through it, closing in on done for the season? Andy has a good point about the consequences we face many times on these steep lines. At 43 I am feeling my tolerance level for being scared seemingly lowered trip by trip.........

Thanks for the report! How did the Sourdough Chutes look? Cups or corn? :)
I thought they were pretty good; yeah there's a little bit of cupping, but you're not getting bucked or chattered around.

Cool post! I wish i had gone up there instead of Stevens. Did you need a 4x4 to get up there? Any glide avannche evidence, seems like prime glide avalanche terain. Way to get after the north idaho goodness!

Thanks Joe! Good job on Stevens, though. Always a good destination! No 4x4 needed to get up...

I wonder if maybe we were really up at Sunrise last week because we searched for these infamous chutes and bowls around this area and had no luck.
Nice one, it looked pretty exposed and coverage seemed minimal. White knuckle fun is right. I gotta
admit after hearing about the accident up there, it really makes you think of the consequences.

For sure, bring a rope. The standard route is straight forward with plenty of climbers doing the route. But don't underestimate the size of the crevasses. We ski down un roped, but keep your eyes on the slots.
Wow! Surprised this isn't getting more press. Well done, very inspiring.
We are going up Mt. Baker Coleman Glacier on 7/28, do you think the conditions will still be skiable. If so should we ski down roped?
Thanks, for the post.
We are coming up the Mt. Baker on the 7/28 do you think the Coleman will be skiable?
Did you ski down roped?

Sort of sad that I'm 0 for 2 on these trips.
You guys are missed up here! Looks like it was a blast!

Hey Shred - bikini required ;)
Radka and Chris - yes friends Gordon and Dan skied off the top and down avalanche glacier on sunday, they said it was pretty frozen on top, but once below the rock bands it softened up for good turns.

wow, nice report. I like the close-up photo on the N Twin sub-peak with your ski tracks in it.
My name is Aja Woodrow, I am a wildlife biologist for the US Forest Service Cle Elum Ranger District. On 6/12 I installed a wolverine run pole and remote camera S.W. of Lake Anne in the upper Esmeralda Basin country. On 7/12 I hiked in to check the site for hair and photos but was dismayed to find the camera missing, a first for me. This camera loss will make it more difficult to detect rare canrivores returning to our area. Please refrain from posting about cameras in the future as 500+ people...

Sourdough not cupped as of Sunday, except toward the very bottom - a few rock fall cups. Snow was ridiculously nice for the temps.
Ok, I stand corrected. I looked back at my pics, and the snow WAS cupped, but it didn't ski like it was cupped. It skied great.
You are so right, and isn't it a good thing that I'm the bean counter and not in the editorial department!
Nice trip report Mike, looks fantastic. I was home for two days and now back on the road. I went and skied Colchuck again, not as nice as when we skied it , but about the lowest fruit on the tree for a quick trip. Did I forget to mention, you are certifiably nuts. Loved the video!
Waliking the false floor of a crevasse in order to find an errant ski, David's wholsome food vs our Mountain House, a billy goat setting off most of the avalances, David gently rousting us out of bed early every morning with hot water, Brian getting swept up in a tumble, an hour long lightning storm, tackling a wind blown pyramid full of gear. . . lots of stories, but how to tell them?
Gear note: With these soft conditions my Karhu Lookouts (scales) rarely neede...

Sorry if I missed it, did you use the Chiwawa river rd? If not, heard any reports regarding it? Thanks.
Yes, Chiwawa River Road. Completely dry. Smooth sailing.
