Sorry if I missed it, did you use the Chiwawa river rd? If not, heard any reports regarding it? Thanks.
Looks like conditions were very different from Sunday, where a steady wind kept things cool all day, and even forced me to put my long underwear on! Arrived at Piker's Peak around 1pm to a crowd of at least 20 people (and 2 dogs) waiting for conditions to soften. Most lost patience (or heat) and skied down the South Spur under mediocre conditions. Only saw 2 people ski from summit to Piker's and a few even left skis at the bottom of the flat traverse once realizing ho...

On top in 5.5 hours where we pledged elegance to the flag ...
Good move. Much better than pledging clumsiness ... ;)
The heck with hanging with the team TLT5p, I want to roll with you guys... ;D
Rad you guys! For some reason I feel like there maybe pictures being withheld...
After a Naches River hiking adventure I drove by some of you folks (black subaru) packing up at the top of Chinook at the end of the day. Wanted to throw down some in-the-know TAY hand wave, but then realized no such thing existed.

Any ski descents after this point will require sideslipping or rappelling over a few dozen feet of bare ice at each location.
Or just build a kicker!
Thanks for stopping! The pulled pork was almost as good as the ride up to the top!
And some photos of the skiers:
1. Tobae getting after it as she nears the summit
2. Oyvind at 10.8k after skiing corn from the summit
3. Stephanie with Mt St Helens in the background

Nice conditions in that area!
There is an idea for Turns All Year calendar!
Thanks, Michael and Alexander... reminds me that the American Alpine Club has rescue insurance, if remember correctly... never got around to signing up for membership. Too bad it doesn't come with free climbing passes!
Yes... a big thank you for the report. I almost went up there yesterday but stayed away due to the lightning. Looks like there is a few good lines left for a little while. Hopefully I can make it up there this weekend.
Thanks for the great TR Lowell. Went up there on Friday for my first time and had an amazing time, started heading down just as the thunderstorm was rolling in.
Sweet! Looks like perfect conditions.
Eckels....
Around 5000ft or about an hour in of steady hiking before you hit snow.
Have a good one.

To get to Mowich Lake requires traveling on gravel road for about 15-16 miles but it easily covered with any car. Just some big potholes and washboard here and there but you don't need high clearance.
4.5 hours from the TH to about 9,400 ft on the glacier. Few breaks along the way, however.

looks good Andy! how far do you gotha hike to snow?
Great report! I had wanted to do this same trek with a friend today but didn't have enough time. It would have been the first time there for me, and I'd still like to try again soon. What are the road conditions like (okay for a car with low clearance)? How long did it take to you to get from car to the top?
nice trip you guys !
Nice Mike! I was thinking about climbing those and Maude next week.
As expected, a few more days of warm weather and sunshine have finished off the Kautz Glacier as a worthwhile ski route for this season. As of today July 14, both the main crux in the steepest part of the Kautz ice chute near 11900 ft and the lower ice band near 11400 ft have melted out to bare gray glacial ice. Any ski descents after this point will require sideslipping or rappelling over a few dozen feet of bare ice at each location.

...thinking about the preparation that went into this trip. Every parent has a different style, some very cautious, others leading their kids into some pretty wild situations. I'm somewhere in between. Here are some things we did before this trip, for what it's worth:
* Self-arrest practice at Mt Rainier
* Roped climbing practice at Magnuson Park (belaying, rapp...

That's the cat's ass, Mike. But just say no to the downhill base grind.
Thanks Pete!. I'm counting the grass skiing toward my annual ski vert total :)
I put some photos on the new Wenatchee Outdoors forum site. For Wenatchee area folks, this site is a great resource.

You hit it at my favorite time of day to ski that glacier (6ish in the summer). When then sun starts to get cut off by the ridge, that moisture on top of snow that might make things just a little suctiony gets factored out, it seems. Did you stop and look for iceworms?
Traverse out of the ex cave valley looks really easy and smooth right now, maybe even good enough for snowboarding it.
Re: your animal pal at end of vid: Swiper, no swiping!

Nice write-up, great slide show, that is a big trip. I tip my hat.

Nice work, guys! Gotta love the talus.
Great first report. Neither look very old or broad to this geezer.
Don't sweat the August and September turns this year - piece of cake. Just follow Silas. Heck he will probably offer to carry your stuff to the snow for you, since it will be so close.

How was the lightning storm on Sunday? Any interesting stories?

Conditions look great up there. Skied baker today, conditions were horrible (mank, non-transformed glop above 6500 ft). I need to get down there.
wow...... that must've been amazing to score such great snow conditions on such a steep route. congrats!

we did'nt have skis (mabee should post at WTA or NW hikers!) but does give good images of ski conditions!
Me thinks the ski poles and the great pics qualifies you. ;)
Thanks for the great visual coverage update.
Nice! A few of those ditches definitely require confidence in where the bottom of your car is...

This was my experience each of the 4 times I skied with Kyle!
Me too what's the deal with that guy.
I had a great trip Amar and I didn't even get a sunburn.
As of yesterday, (cars with good ground clearance) can make it to the top of the meadow.
A short walk from the turn around yielded continuous snow coverage except in one spot to the top.

Thanks for the report! How did the Sourdough Chutes look? Cups or corn? :)
Sourdough not cupped as of Sunday, except toward the very bottom - a few rock fall cups. Snow was ridiculously nice for the temps.

aha, I had seen pictures of dedge and thought that it was what would be right over the ridge, but because we drove up in the dark and didn't have a map, we went west instead of east to find it.
It's a bit of a ridgeline walk from Sourdough, but all those north facing chutes stay so nice that it's worth it.

July 10-11, 2012, Mount Rainier, Kautz Glacier via Paradise Glacier & Disappointment Cleaver
I was dragging for unknown reasons, moving way slower than I expected (and compared to my partner)
This was my experience each of the 4 times I skied with Kyle!
Nice report as usual, Amar.
Sweet. THanks for the map!

Be very careful ! That kind of behavior is very addictive!
By far I liked that. Very nice from the start above Anvil.
I'm thinking watching somebody skiing in front is better than looking at somebodys ski tips for 5 min .
