How did the dog do - was he with your group?  Hard to imagine a dog making it through the deep pillows.

Did the guy slipping off the log make it over with dry landing gear?  I would have been sideways in the creek, for sure.
Stugie?  Close call, buddy!  Glad you guys had a good time, and thankful for the safe outcome.
We were worried about that likely loading and choose to stay on the bullion basin side of the gap and ski the more wind facing face and rib above the lake. We dug a pit and did some low exposure runs first.

I know someone who was fully buried 25 years ago on the union creek side on a slope that had been skied right before by others.
I'd also considered the Slot as a destination for today. Thanks for confirming that sleeping in was the right choice!
The camp is at 5000', no rain crust, only powder on wind sheltered slopes, or hard chalk on open ones.
I was wondering if you got any pics of the log crossing...
Doug, A great adventure and you returned the way you left.   ;)
Ha – saw your pics on facebook too - looked nice.

I’m on sabbatical from work right now so if you ever have a last minute urge to get some pow and want another backcountry guy (and beacon) to tag along let me know. If you don’t already have it my phone # is on fb.

Thanks for posting about your trip.  That is a slope that I enjoy and I would have liked to have been there on Saturday.  I'd be interest in hearing more about what happened---and am curious as to details for the "second Jay being discovered by luck", etc.

Glad you all are unscathed!

Thanks, and sorry about the awkward phrasing there - should d...
Classic.  Could have been the subject of many a field report by the addicted.  Usually preceded by "How bad could it be?"
Exactly one week earlier this very same slope was being buffetted by 70mph gusts and a  very windy continuous 40mph breeze. We saw a ton of transport and in that area deposition of 6" of wind slab on a hard  crust that was not well bonded and pretty reactive. It went in my blue book as "hmmmm...". Seems it hasn't gone anywhere, and started to have more consequence with additional depth.
Refreshing video, thanks! Conversations this weekend included lamentations that it is often difficult to find someone willing to spend the extra time to shoot quality video or stills when there is deep pow to be skied. Good on ya!
Great vid! What kind of camera are you shooting with?

Dang, I'd love to know where to find lines like that at Mt. Washington. seems like I kinda recognized some of the first few but after that?

Wanna go skiing? I'll buy the beer...

Snodger, PM me and we'll chat.

Joshua,

Your videos are great.  The last time Jill and I were skiing Mt. WA and Mt. Cain was the last week of December 1999.  We were going up to Green Pt. and for a Centennial Party.

We both have a pair of Voile Drifters.  ;)

Zap & Jill

Zap, if you're up this way again, hit me up. LOVE my Drifters!

Nice work! I was up there this summer with my dad and i remeber thinking how awesome the terrain was. I remember crossing the upper road. Did you guys take a right when you got to the road? Is the "bowl 3" visible from the road? Thanks!

Hello PowderT,

Here is a topo, if you crossed the upper road on the Red Mountain Trail then that is exactly...

OK OK I'll admit it: we got first tracks down International (together with JPH and crew) - BUT only 'cause Lowell et al hung a left and dropped Edelweiss...

first time I've ever skinned Alpental. Skinning a ski area just seems... weird.  But with Rob straight from a burmese beach to skiing (5 hrs. sleep in 48 hrs.) a skin track in place had a certain appeal...

Thanks for the report, visited with Jake this morning, he said the skiing was good, but the exit was a grim trudge, seems like plenty of people are reporting tree well traps, with this last big blast of snow.
Bridge lurker here.

Sunday was busy up there, but there was no shortage of untracked stashes. Good to see folks out and enjoying it.
Hey Lisa, I don't think that was us on the bridge.  We were in no way awake and at it to greet late comers to the party.  Either way, I think a great time was had by all!

We were happy to be there on Sunday as well, and enjoyed the snow from top of Chair 1 before the fog set in.

Nice to meet some of the lurkers.  :)

Love the pic of Sydney glenndmcc. I spoke to you briefly as you came off the bridge and we were leaving the lot to head up. You mentioned hitting shot 6, if that was you guys. Could be another group.

Yes, cumulus I can relate to that on Friday. It was strange skiing Nash for us  as well with no folks, nor bumps.

Good day to be out!
Glad you are OK and had a great day with your Dad.

That slope is very avy prone and has killed at least 3 people and requires careful assessment as to stability.

A bit more spacing between people in the skintrack in that area would be something I'd think about.

Thanks for the report. If you can survive a Naches  bacon cheesburger...you can survive anything!
Here's the picture of Johnny dropping into shot six, which had a very visible (and scrapey) cornice from an earlier slide.  The snow sluffed significantly, but stayed stable beyond boot top depth.
Good foto of a nice turn considering the rain/death crust.  Down here at white pass it was the same except no tree bombs but rain crust of half an inch on all the beautiful tracks in the bc from saturday and sunday.  The powder cycle is fini and now must wait for the next snowfall to bring the good conditions.
Nice vids. Looks like you found some good snow for the drifters.
awesome photography! I was touring at crystal the same day. It was good, but not that good. could you tell me where you guys were?
It was a great day to be out.  Thanks for the tour Vince!  I'm enjoying making all of my friends/family in Colorado Jealous with all of our early season pow out here :).  I'll post up some images of you slaying the pow tonight!

CPlinko we were not the large group you passed. There were only 3 of us.

But since one of those was Lisa it probably sounded like a mob of snowboarders headed up.:)

also, can't say I've ever skiied nash untracked. Super nice.
T'was indeed good. Thanks to many for the skintracks.  Bummed we didn't see you!
Glad you guys had good skiing.  We spent most of our time breaking a trail there last Friday...

You missed a great workout on Hidden Lake yesterday, and tree skiing w/ headlamp too  ;D
Thanks.  The orange pack was a very deliberate purchase :)
Lurker here too,  Juan, Emily, and I were there on our teleboards with Ms. America, Sidney the superdog.  Great push to the top of chair 2 with a heavy run down.  Sid was pretty whooped by the time we hit the bottom, which is rare, so I know it was a good day.    Shots below are of John dropping into some untouched softies, and the crew preparing for turns!
Nice job getting some of the best snow I have ever seen or skied.  It was beyond belief and it looks like you guys enjoy it to the fullest.
Chuck, yes I persuaded Dave that if I broke trail it would be well worth the effort and it was.

Yes, Zap I do carry a camera although after taking Chucks picture the battery died.  :(

Glad you enjoyed the goods juan bended knee. I suspect you tele? Double face shots for you.

Plinko we were not the large group you passed. There were only 3 of us. Glad you made the best of it up high, if it were not for the winds we almost did the same Friday. Not enough time...
So you got Dave to cave in and climb up eh?  Good.
Another lurker.  Selfishly skied right past your big group on the way down to get out of the rain.  Rude, I know!  Had been doing short laps on the top half most of the day to stay above the wet stuff.

The place was more crowded Friday and the snow quality much better.  At the top of chair 2 on lap 1 met up with Jahn, (on his 4th lap) and he still smoked me on the way down!

Ran into other lurkers on both days.  Skiing at a ski area isn't usually report-worthy for...
Cool photo with the color contrast. Them woods is deep!
Thanks Zap.  It felt like a major treat skiing in the sun in December had to share.
Lisa,  You still carry your camera.  ;)
