Funny, I was just thinking about Black Hole while touring yesterday... thought it would be a great day for it, and that someone should be out doing it. And you were! Hope to see some pics...

Nice work and way to avoid the crowds!
It was a busy day out there with more skiers and shoers than I have seen all season!

Any idea how Zig Zag/ and or 'Lum Rock area might be?
We skied from Crater Rock on Sunday, 12/30 and it was amazing, probably the best powder skiing I've had above Timberline.
Rootsman, Thanks for twisting my arm. That was a really good day.
I'm guessing 8 miles or so round trip.

Good on you guys! I knew I should have circled back with you about this tour. What was the round trip tour mileage?

RIP SW. The northwest ski community has lost too many good ones in the last couple years.
Dave, Thanks for sharing the Mt. Rainier trip. Everybody is back and wiser.
I enjoyed your Mt. Tuckerman Ravine tour. Reminds me of 30 years ago. ;)

Thanks for the rare winter-season Rainier TR and the useful conditions report on the upper mountain, Dave. Any photos?
Just a few comments regarding budgeting time. For any given party and set of snow conditions, the time from Muir to the summit will (in general) always be greater than from Paradise to Muir, usually about 30-50% greater. It's a useful rule of thumb for calculating one's expected time to the summit, given the time it took to get to Muir.

Surprising you would hit a rock in seven inches of snow! You fun hogs!
Thanks Mike. Yes let's get out. I have to say, my heart skipped a beat when Andy hit that rock and took a forward tumble in your foothills video.
John, you do get after it! Great line, and wonderful pictures. thanks
We were up there today, in the bowl north of the north bowl of Thunder. Beautiful cold sunny day, but the wind has had its way with the snow out of the trees, at least where we were. Variable crust. Still enjoyable skiing, but required being on your toes :-).
Best snow was down in the trees, and also for the first few hundred feet below the ridgetop at 6500ft. Everything in between was crusted.

Great photos and nice report. One of these days we'll share a summit snack. I like coffee too.

It was a fun tour for us and helped me get a better sense of adventures to be had in the region.
Well said!

Anything above or near alpine is hammered as are the open faces east of Hood ( Barlow, Bennet). Low sun protected trees seemed best.

I guess I should clear up that the dear shots were shot from afar with a zoom. I wasn't really chasing the dear.

also, thank you Kenji for your initial inspiration, and route for the first part of this perfect day.

You are welcome, though not quite sure how. could be another "Kenji"??
Anyway, looks great. It's time for me to go back in there!
Pics or it didn't happen right? Thanks for putting together a big, killer day Scott!

One ridge over, we had great skiing both in the open and under the big trees above ~4K from west through south aspects - the turning conditions were holding up much better than I'd expected/hoped in fact! Only a few random bomb craters that were easily skirted in bouncy snow. It was nice not to feel a bottom even in the deep forest. No signs of instability, even on a few ski cuts of 35-ish degree convex humps, save for 2-6" of very small reactive pockets of snow blown into the lee of w...
Definitely class 5 terrain. If it weren't for the nice snow pack we would have needed a rope to traverse and rap down where we were. As it is, we had nice cascade concrete to get excellent purchase with our boots. :)
I'm sure we were skiing scree fields. Definitely lots of fun little couloirs that open up into small aprons and treed skiing along this ridge. I'd like to approach it from the other direction next time, and probably bring a sma...

Mike,
The video seems to indicate that you are hunters ! ;)
Yea, I like the scenes where you seem to be chasing the elk.
Nice rock scene too! Looks like a fun adventure.

Three of us followed you guys up on Friday (the 28th). Was a stellar day out - The full moon and stars, and then the sun was out and shining from the start. We carried on beyond the notch in the East Ridge of Chair and stomped on some steep slopes to test stability and dug a pit under the North Face of Chair. The storm layer 6" - 12" down was very well bonded so we skied first tracks down to Snow Lakes. There is now a "min" glacier forming at the West...
Dan - I've done that ridge in the summer from Snow Lake Divide to the summit of Snoqualmie. I got into a lot of unintended 4th and 5th class scrambling. There were a couple of spots where I started to try to go down and around the 5th class climbing only to find myself on a steep scree field. Eventually, I got up to the steep slopes below Snoqualmie that you skin up to reach the Slot entrance. Perhaps you skied one of these scree fields below one of the 5th class mov...
the turns have been so good this season, you can't help but laugh! strong work Scott!
Amazing how good conditions make for fast travel. Sick trip.

another good one! it's always fun to see oneself on a video.
i like the mix of resort steeps with backcountry pow.
but (though i love that song) i can't help but wonder if it's bad luck to use a tune by "the avalanches" in a ski video!
Awesome edit! Listening to the song, I was immediately reminded of Matchstick Product...
You boys must have been good this year! No coal here!
BURLY!
I like your approach.
