Good seeing you in the mountains Saturday. Sounds like things got a little spicy on Sunday. Glad you were still able to get out and enjoy it. I'm sure we'll see each other soon. Skiing looks like it's going to be good for a while.....
ay, we did carry a rack & rope, and a pair of approach shoes, but the rime ice on the south side and the stinking weather the night before put a damper on our summit fever.
Should've eaten more oatcakes, those Scotsmen do make some kicking fuel!

We brought the fat skis, so even the lower mountain was pretty enjoyable when you kept the speed up and stayed in the top few inches. Much nicer skiing than last Sunday!

and if anyone in the greater spokane area wants to go skiing let me know. moved here in sept and always looking for partners.
Hey Kevino! Nice to see someone else from the Spokane area on TAY! Always looking for touring partners, as well. Have not done anything north of the border (really wanting to do the Kootenays(Selkirks), though), but regularly do the...
Awesome! Did you actually carry rock gear and then not use it? I'm such an ounce counter that would have hurt me.
Having never been to Cascade Pass before and with visibility being poor, I stayed on the trail the whole way. Coverage was good all the way from mile marker 22 (1 mile from TH), enough to ski the road. At the actual trail head, it was about a foot I'd guess and got gradually deeper with elevation. At the pass I could tell depth by the trail markers which only showed about 2 inches above the snow. In hindsight, the drainage you're talking about would have been mu...
Not enough warning to get a shot of your run on Sat but did get a distant shot of your client. Didn't go that far today, report of our findings in December TRs.
Thanks for the report, this is at the top of my ski list this year, glad to hear there is a good base building, from what I have read, early skiing is known to be good. I would love have the latest snow reports if you are up there skiing.
Glad someone is getting out on Hwy 20. Could you elaborate on which route you took up and down? Did you go up the primary drainage from the trail head parking lot or did you take the trail? How was the coverage? Thanks for the info!

So is this the same or different from Kootenay Pass?
edit: nevermind, google shows me that Kootenay Pass is in the stagleap.
awesome website for that area:

Could be because I don't know anyone who calls it Stagleap Pass. It's Salmo Pass to me, and all my buds who ski there. I grew up in Bonners Ferry. Perhaps Salmo Pass is local nomenclature. Does is say Stapleap on the highway signage?
Otherwise, you are right. Very few TAY folks post from the interior ranges, outside of stories of hut trips. I think most of the...

Burly! Was this a Nairnes fueled trip?
Good for you and the Frenchman. I'm secretly hoping for a warm winter for a Climbs All Year.
An ascent of Prusik would have been fantastic!

Great write up - thanks! Nice to see a detailed thought process report where everything went "right". (Which isn't to say I don't appreciate the retrospective incident or near-miss reports, but this report makes me think maybe those near-miss reports are starting to pay off!).

Willow Creek?
Not Willow, Hairpin Valley.
I was up there again on Saturday. Observed quite a few natural avalanches and a few small skier triggered avalanches. The skier triggered avalanches were running on surface hoar down 30 cms (up to 10 mm in size). The larger (size 2) avalanches were most likely wind slabs near ridge crest.

damn I want to see the pics on facebook... but the link doesn't work
nice talking to you in the Paradise lot. abc
Willow Creek? In any case, I'm always interested in WA Pass area reports. Thanks!
Would that be Mr. Sawtell exercising his ankle in the second pic?
I live in sedro-woolley and am interested in exploring some of the terrain off of hwy 20. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the info Jeff. It is good to know that when we got glop over here you are enjoying goodness.

Not boring, useful! It is helpful to hear how conditions are looking up there; thanks for the information.

Any more tidbits on snowpack? I'm wondering about the crust and how deep and supportable it is (boots vs skis).
I didn't notice any crust except directly under trees. I was on skis the whole time except for a few course corrections near the car where I post holed just a foot or two down to the dirt.
The snow was mostly very heavy, turning...

cool. you made it to White Chuck. We were there a couple of months ago... sorta by accident--of the Plan C variety--but were nonetheless impressed.
Skied that col. Fun run but looong approach once the road's snowed in
Great work on your WC ski! Fun to...
Super cool and very timely! I wouldn't have thought the road would be drivable still. Rat Trap pass should be much more accessible in the winters now, so I hope to get out and explore from that side sometime.

holy moly Zack--a panorama! My expectations are rising...
nice to see where you've been. Let's see some hotsprings!

Sounds like a great trip. I'll have to visit that hut someday
Jealous. Way to get after it, Zack, but give yourself credit for the trans-province portion. I think you were skiing in Alberta at Lake Louise.

After looking at maps and Google Earth I was hoping to ski to what looks like a col between the smaller NW peak and the summit at 6989 elevation on the SW aspect, opposite side of the mountain from the glacier. However the weather,...

One other thing to mention is that this was my first weekend trying NTN Freedom bindings. On the lifts Sat, they were just like the Freeride (for my style anyway), but much better for touring due to lighter weight and more ROM (especially w/ high-heels). However, it did ice up in front of the toe cups needing to chip it away when transitioning from warm south side to cold North side. Nothing...
We found similar conditions on Sunday.
Since it was Jan's first day back on skis since her "oopsy" in April, we planned a low angle tour out to Hurricane Hill and back. As we approached the hill, we spied a set of tracks on the SE face. They looks suspiciously like those made by a local free heeler ;)
By the time we got to the top of that southeast facing slope the sun had worked it's magic and we enjoyed almost spring like snow conditions o...
