Gosh Jeff, let's see great snow, great job with the camera, nice ending, good music, nice edit. thanks
Toured up to the exit of Thunder Creek and enjoyed 2 laps in the Phantom Trees meeting the vague description Silas gave. Settled 6-12" powder with immediate cross loading above 5k. As you can see the Exit chute was loading from the wind and exposed rocks right below the cornice. I triggered a small section 5-8' back from the lip of the cornice, not resulting avalanche on the slope below, but not a big trigger.
I like Susan's hat. Is she skiing with the hat during the snow day's ?
West facing timbered slopes had excellent stable 8-12" powder today 5500-4000'. Partly cloudy with light winds above 5000', foggy below.
Sweden today for us... but I do believe we heard your voices. Only possible explanation I could muster is that sound must travel at a much higher efficiency rate in the higher realms... Though I'm pretty sure I saw your tracks too. Not sure how to explain that. Montana, eh? Looks pretty! Def no Santas in Sweden...
Will post pics later...

was that you we ran into on your exit from the commonwealth?
super swell of you kids to groom hyak before the public rolls it.
Nice TR, Herman is my favorite for easy access
Fun day out at hyak - nice way to break up my drive over from Spokane.
I was one of those kids with the wide boards, very worthwhile today. Fletcher, I was the dude that kept running into your group near the lift. Nice meeting you, hopefully you enjoyed that last run.

Me and my buddies were the three splitters that set the second half of the track. Super awesome in the morning and early afternoon hours. We probably crossed paths.
Sounds like a rad day! Sucks about your gear.
Knee deep over on Kendall knob in the old growth. Wasted to much time trudging around in the flat bit before it gets steep for a perfect dawn patrol. Hyak was the right choice today.
WOW! (seems to be a popular opener!)...Nice photographic treat!
Fantastic photos ! ;)
Feel be there the end of January.

Thanks for the quick response. Kind of figured, it just looks so nice sitting at home on my couch. Looks awesome either way.
By the way, I like the double helix in the second to last picture.

Nice picture Mr. Wild.
Looks like you finally got off those sidestashes you kept breaking. I'll be over in the cascades starting tomorrow, let me know if you want to get out.

here is my dumb question of the night:
are the upper mountains' snow unstable or do people in utah have something against skiing from the summit?
I think it is a combination of:
1. Avi risk/danger.
2. Thin snowpack (only 60-70" and tons of rocks lurking).
3. Laziness - it's hard to skin to the top.

Wow, no kidding!
That Holy Toledo photo is a keeper. Wow.
wow, that looks insanely awsome...
I'd recognize those DPS' anywhere...

Kendall is (the russian doll version of) North America. It's got all the states; excitement, relaxation, delaware, florida. We were in kentucky.
Stefan, I think the politically correct answer to Josh's question these days is, "Somewhere in North America." And use this map
Cool photos by the way, as usual.

Good question Josh. Kendall is a lot of terrain... with a lot of great options for a variety of conditions. Kendall Peak is the high point (not really a peak) along a roughly N-S trending ridge. This ridge also connects with another roughly E-W trending ridge, the one the Pacific Crest Trail runs along starting from Snoqualmie Pass.
We were on an upper W facing slope, then headed over and up into the trees (the E-W ridge).

Nice! Lots of TRs from this area lately but I'm really not sure where it is. Any hints? Thanks
I agree. Great pics! I've added another tour to my list
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Scott, I think with the snow we are getting tonight the shovel is a goner till spring, but the turns tomorrow should be fantastic.
found an upside down snowpack out there today but nothing moved on us.
We toured just south of Stevens; met plenty of happy friends enjoying the pow.
Similar sentiments about the snow. Fun and friendly snow where we went hunting for stable snow. Found occasional ~Q2 shears ~4-6" down near ridgetops, propagation zilch. As expected, the afternoon snow was coming in with increased density.

Nice Trip Report John. Red Mountain is on my list! It would be nice to ski with you this winter again versus just WTA events!
I was up on Mazama the day before, pretty stable while breaking trail up but started to get some cracks & slabs skiing down. Big snow coming now.

I'll be visiting my folks on the island for the holidays and would love to get out for a day or two. I can offer good washington micros for a little VI local knowledge :)
Send me a PM owbe and we'll chat.
Goods news no one was injured! You might consider also posting your event/observations on the new NWAC snowpack info exchange site for the benefit of others who may not read this TR:
