Wow, if you can drive to 4500ft on the Bee Creek road that must be one of the shortest approaches on the planet. Never been up there...
Nice tracks Lowell, if you don't get out again, that looks like a perfect way to close out the season.
I have been eyeing this line for quite a while. I was up on Snow Dome this weekend thinking that right now would be prime. Looks pretty damn steep. Good work! Maybe I'll get this one next year...
things were looking dismal there for a minute... what with a broken hydraulic lifter stuck in the side of my van's engine threatening to keep me in the city all weekend. but with some good luck and a bit of modification to a rented pilot bearing puller, i was able to hammer out the stuck part and get my van running around 1am saturday morning!
Yes the route we called "packtrail line" (on USGS) is near to the Huckleberry trail.
We were very lucky to have dry trail assistance at the 0.90-0.98 mile marks-
A very steep drop!

Looks like a good time. Bummed I missed out this trip around the sun, but I was certainly there "in spirits" ;D
Good idea Lowell. Has this become a tradition of yours? It seems you visit Eldorado around the solstice each year.
A perfect spot in my mind for the longest day of the year. I may see you out there one June day :)

Tia and I hit Silver on Sunday, my CRV reaching the top of "Windy Acres" without complaint -- the slopes were enjoyably smooth -- all suncup bumpiness mysteriously smoothed out -- though we did encounter some proto-moguls in the chute off the knob that leads to the stone shelter.
Nice, insightful write-up, appreciate the Hillmap too.
Nice running into y'all up there, glad you had a good time. Not a bad way to spend the first day of summer!
Thanks for the TR! Any thoughts on conditions of S ridge of S Sister? Heading down that way tomorrow for a 5 or so days, probably do a day trip up.
I also was impressed by the relative paucity of coverage for Pre- July. I hiked up sourdough and dropped the chute on Diggett and it was pretty sweet corn till the last third when it got mashy. Can't ski all the way out to the the view point and its going fast.
Wow we skied up there a week ago and the snow was filled in but we knew it was melting fast. We were happy to ski the chutes then and not wait, but you had to climb up from the White river campground then most of the stuff was still easily skiable. Amazing how quick it goes faster this year than the previous two.
The park should open all that stuff by Memorial Day. Oh well.

So the skinning is still continuous up the "winter" ascent route?

I booted a lot of it, my buddy skinned all the way to piker's. One or two very short carries.

What a line. The view on 6/20 in the afternoon. Bluebird.
Yes, I found good corn starting from the summit a bit before noon. There was a good freeze Friday night. And the recent snow I mentioned made the surface nice.
No guarantee that what I found on Saturday is still true today. I think the key to good snow is to get up early so you can ski early. I was moving pretty quickly.

Did you find decent corn? I was doing some climbing in Boston Basin on thursday and was post-holing through isothermal mush, particularly above 7k. I had thought that it would be pretty heavy for skiing, and that the area needed some sun/clear cycles before I wanted to go back.

A few days ago when I called up the Hood River station for an update on the road to Cloud Cap:

Super, thanks for the beta!
(I'm looking forward to skiing the moguls on Monday after the weekend hordes...)
So in addition to the usual RMT exit, I've also previously returned by skinning up ~1400' vertical from ~7700' to arrive at the Lunch Counter.

Almost no portages on that return, but the skinning is feasible only with perfect snow.

Hey I recognize that ride! You parked right by my VW camper van on the Glacier Creek Road one glorious day back in March. In spite of being tuckered out from climbing Baker, I thought it cool enough to oogle a little and I remember that wood handlebar and the spice rack next to the window. Nice carving!

Thanks very much for the info. I've not been to Adams before but really interested to summit and ski the SW chutes by splitboard. How much longer would you say it will be prime? Also, I've heard the road may require high clearance to drive, but I've got a pretty low riding passenger car - is that basically a no-go?
I would say 2 more weeks? The chu...

Request or two for more info:
-About 3/4 mile hike before hitting snow.
-Attached photo shows our descent. I've done this twice. I know some people drop lower and schwack back via RTM trail.
-Point A. As you exit the chutes, look left. About '10 o'clock'. You'll see a saddle with a snow tongue to the left of the saddle low point. Ski to that and then curve left around the ridge.

Jason and crew great trip, loved the moving pictures, and some pretty bold skiing for being so far from the post office. Very scenic country, and it looks like some of it was hard won. Thanks
Great video! Kept me smiling through all 9 minutes.
Thanks for a great time Nick! And for introducing me to team tutu.
Great video and nice timing on this anniversary. I like the then and now of map vs iphone navigation and summit handshakes!
FYI, I had to d/l the video as it wouldn't play in Chrome; stalled after 3 seconds.

And rock climbing is a way to get to the top of particularly intriguing ski lines!
Nice report, Silas...
Rocks are merely obstacles to be avoided in the skiing process.

The mushroom in your photo looks like a "false morel" to me. Not edible.
Nice pics!
Nice pics!
I use Firefox also and had to disable the addon "Image and Flash Blocker". Worked fine afterwards and was fun to watch. Thanks Lowell.

Hey Jason,
I bumped into you at Baker in the parking lot a few days before. You said you were going in the Blum side. Any reason you go that way instead of from Bacon?
Dwayne, yeah. I've been up the blum approach 3 times and down it 5 times. Down has always been epic and up not that bad. I wanted to traverse through the area and choose to get the worst...
Their fox sighting is notable -- has anyone else seen foxes on Rainier above 13k?
Dee Molenaar reports bears, porcupines, and ground squirrels here, but anything larger than a mouse or marmot is a surprise!

btw
the vid doesn't play in firefox (works fine in other browsers), comes up "no video with supported format and MIME type found" (lagging in the html5 support apparently)
could add this:
AddType video/webm .webm
AddType video/mp4 .mp4
to the .htacces...
thanks for the report. Looks like good conditions and good times!
vicarious enjoyment at its finest, most excellent indeed!
Looks good!
Interesting to see the 75 year differences around Baker in the Watson footage. Current conditions of the Colfax glacier for example seem to stack up pretty well to 1939 conditions.
The gps segment is funny...
Liked the accompanying music too... Isarwinkler Landler... if you ever happen to find yourself in Munich in the Summertime they'd surely play this on an Isar-Flossfahrt. Bring a swimsuit on a hot day. Or just...

Cool video, thanks for posting. A dilemma that many of us struggle with indeed.
