I was thinking the same thing myself but unlike you I did not follow through and go to WA pass. It's probably my favourite area and the snow and golden larches are an incredible mixture.
Good job. ;D
When are they planning on closing the road?

Saturday report here
Good Times!
Joe
Silas - you were napping in the car at Longmire, but I did chat with Rick, then we went for breakfast, the gate opened and we let the crowd get a head start before our group started up.  Lisa, Jon, Mr. Burns and I had a nice easy skin up and stuck to our 3PM turn around time. So missed seeing you on the hill. Some folks I know did not get down until 7PM and had great difficulty route finding in the whiteout, no wands or tracks to follow. The rangers were already gathering information about...
yup, too much exploring, looking for the best stash, and goodbye visibility. was up there the day before in the afternoon, and i can tell you that the snow was the lightest, fluffiest powder i've seen since last feb/march's 9 foot powder dump. too bad the freezing level had to rise 2000' feet...

You never forget your first time.   8)

Without the uncomfortable silence and hangover to boot!
I was also up there, made it to near the base of anvil on the paradise glacier side when the weather gods allowed no mercy bringing high winds and face cutting ice shrapnel with immediately dissapearing visability. I should have turned around lower and lapped some runs before the vis. went bad. The turns I did get were nice when I could see more than a foot in front of me. Guess I got too ambitious and wanted the max vert. Oh well. Good day nonetheless, nice to get the skis on and make some kick...
Was among the many others and saw another dozen folks I knew and all in the same place, pretty rare.  Great times were had!
I felt like a Boeing Van Pool driver - there were six of us -Rusty Knees, Snow Bell, Moscawulff, Dan, Molly and Joe.  Snow Bell and MW went up near Muir, the rest of us stopped at Pan Point and invented new ways to get down through the rocks.  What a great winter adventure!
Skied the nisqually chutes for an amazing set of face shots for one of the best times I've ever been down them. Good times, first tracks. Totally awesome! I'm getting too spoiled. I feel like a snot-nosed kid with an over-attentive mother who wants and get ice cream for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Heck, whenever he wants :).

...Rumors of Jeanette, Jerry, Ron also in the 'hood.

Rumor confirmed, Silas.
But, Unfortunately, we missed skiing.  We were busy ferrying in winter supplies to a nearby cabin that we use in the winter.  Almost waited too long!!
And you can see from these pics who did the majority of the work!!
So did anyone from this mega-herd take any pictures that they're willing to post?
I got out there too! With Em and Alex. I had a great day with Steve, Rob and Jen.
So much fun for Oct!
A surprised tourist even asked Em which way the ski lift was. ;D
Myself (Spltbrdr), Snowtroll and 3 others were up there as well...ended up skiing the Nisqually Chutes which were in wonderful shape.

Anyone know why the late gate opening?? Working out the early season kinks?  Increase breakfast traffic @ Longmire???
i had to work the whole weekend :(

who wants to ski on Tuesday!
Awesome job, great write-up, great pics, and great video!  Happy Birthday Jason and Josh!  What a great way to spend your weekend!
NateR, BeckyB, Q, powtoy, cathy, Murray and just about everyone else under the sun (or clouds) as well.
Looks like you were at the Forest side of the pass, parked at Latrines?  We were there on the 20th - but on the park side of the pass. It was special  ;D!

We were sure we were dreaming that it was February but we did not need to do the six (or is it eight?) mile slog from Crystal to get there.  Skiied right out of the car for multiple YoYos in knee-deep whispy powder! We had it all to ourselved, saw some snowboarders at the Latrines but we presumed they stayed on the Forest side of p...
I think we saw Dre up high ahead of us at timberline today.  Our party of 3 made it up to about 9,600 ft before the cloud ceiling began to drop.  We had a good ski down and hit the gullies for some fun drops once in the lift area.  Our friend Rhonda was kind enough to drive the car down to meet us on Hwy 26, so we kept it going all the way down the alpine trail, which had surprisingly good coverage.  All told, it was a continuous run of nearly 6,000 ft vertical - not bad for...
Left the lot at 1000. Tons of people up on Hood.

Highpoint of 10000 ft. At the time, I think I was the first one to go that high. A few people went a little above the top of palmer.

THe higher I went, the better the snow was. I am amazed at how quickly the wind and temp consolidated the snow.

I was foolish enough to go up on Saturday and there was 1-3 ft of powder, too bad I couldnt enjoy it during the lashing winds.

I didn't expect the snow to be that good after the reports we got in the parking lot. But it turned out to be a great day. Especially the post slide party with Snowdawg Jr. trying to railslide the tree.
Congradulations on months 120 and 75!!!  Those are some impressive streaks!
Nice job. Looks like the flakes were nice and stout. Let's hope they hold on high, and that winter is now on it's way...
I think there should be more tele jokes than snowboard jokes.  A crash with tele skis is like playing twister with 5 foot 2X4's on your feet.  I appreciate a good crash - but that picture made it look like Darryl is still upright.

What a great day!  Sorry I missed it.

Thanks, snoslut!  That wasn't augering - it was a dumb ass telemarker doing a snow stability test.  Why should I use my shovel to dig a pit when I can create one by ramming my head into the snow pack?

Hey Jason,

Once again you've posted an extraordinary report. I really like your long exposure night shots. The multi-color stars are cool, almost unreal. Is that night shot raw or enhanced? Thanks for posting. Zeno

I normally shoot in Raw (the last 6 months or so), but this time couldn't because I brought my smaller card (bummer). The picture has...
Hey Sam,
Yeah, sorry we didn't get a chance to chat.  We skied the Sahale Gl going up from Cascade Pass, but imagine the Quien Sabe would have been great looking at your pic.  I have a new Subaru, so you wouldn't have recognized it.  That was some rig you guys were driving!  Let's get out soon now that the snow is flying.

Great report and pics Jason.  Thanks for putting it out there.  I think we may have seen you guys coming out Sunday night at dusk at the Eldorado TH parking area.  If so, sorry we didn't stop to chat, but we ready to get home.  We climbed and skied Sahale on Sunday.  What a great fall day to be out!

Hi Bob,
Great report and pictures!  I recognize that middle ridge picture, and I thought it was fun back in August, but it looks 100 times more enticing without the rocks showing through.  Looks like you had great weather.  Well, next time.  It looks like we're heading south Sunday to Rainier area.  I'll see what you're up to in November and beyond.
Regards,
Don
Nice work!!! Eldorado is pretty far west in that valley so I could see that being light pollution ....as you were probably facing W to NW when you took that?
Great TR and photos!

As for the long exposures, a friend has complained to Nikon about the pink cast in the corner of the frame, and they basically admitted that it's a 'feature' that pops up in long exposures... a light leak, actually.

The slightly yellow background is city light glow.  Yes, it's present even at Eldorado :)
Very nice Jason! Beautiful photos and inspiring prose to motivate adventures!
Great choice, Paul.  It's the best kind of Fall skiing with vivid colors mixed with new snow; nice shots!

Thanks Zap.  I picked up my Kailas in June, and have been dying to use them since!!  It took me a few months to get my new boots and bindings as I wanted to get everything on sale if I could.  I ended up just getting my skis and boots on sale, but if I acted sooner, I could have got the bindings for a steal too!

Way to go, Andy!  Is Avril skiing this too? Ankle must be all good whether skiing or hiking.

Bluebird, great company, good snowboard jokes ;D and creamy smooth vanilla and chocolate chip snow.  What more could I have asked for???
Thanks guys, I'm glad that my efforts putting this story together were enjoyed.

Trumpet, I'll have to try that out. From what I've found out, digital just isn't that good at night photography. I think canons are better with it. It's so dang hard when your climbing too. With that much effort, having something that's right really makes you want to try again, but hey, what comes easy isn't as enjoyed as what comes hard. I'll get this down eventual...
Great shots and thanks for sharing both them and the report.

I seem to recall something from the Nikon manual about an accessory - something along the lines of a black cap for the viewfinder that is meant to be used for long exposures. I also need to go back and re-read to see if my memory is right, as I got some strange cast from long night shots as well.
That long exposure shot is ahhh-some!  Nice TR!
Beautiful photos!!  The alpenglow looks like fire!  Looks like a great way to spend your BD!  Weather is looking great up in the mountains...
When I saw the subject of your post, and thought back on the weekend's weather, I knew I'd be jealous... and I am. :) I can't wait to head in there myself after the low level and crevasse-bridging snowpack grows thicker.

Your photos are great as usual! As for the reddish cast to your night-time photos, you might want to try taking a 30 minute exposure with a lens cap on and the camera in a dark box- the result should be educational (though I know not whether you'll...
Hope you enjoyed your new setup during the outing.  Jill and I have the same ski and binding setup.  We have 40 plus days on the skis in all types of conditions in WA and Canada and down in Argentina and Chile. We have been impressed with the performance of the skis in all types of conditions.  Welcome to the group.
Truly wonderful, Happy Birthday!!
