That was us in the 4runner.  We skied the Nisqually chute.  Extremely boney but some nice snow/turns in spots.

I'll bet you guys will be seeking out some powder.  Me guys will be actively practicing the high arts of parenting and husbandry.  I want to head into the season with a strong positive time balance in the domestic account.  You might think that easy as I am a full time dad but that only seems to raise expectations.  Fortunately, the last two days have wet my beak enough that I should be held over until the next storm (as long as it is soon).

Get fired and we&#...
We also saw the Toyota 4-runner on the way home...
Well, duh....

Snowbell, you went w/ one of my best buds.  What are you guys doing this Sat.?
Hey Freebird,

I was the other guy up there, the one without rock skis that required more walking. :p  I would have stayed longer to chat, but with all the wind, I couldn't hear a word you were saying. I've never seen the ledges so wind-scoured and snowless.  Telemetry shows 50-75mph!  You got outta Muir fast, and just the right time, the cloud ceiling was dropping fast and my first 500' of turns were blind.  Pretty nice after that.

On an unrelated note, whi...
Wow, between you, Scotsman, Snowbell and others, there's going to have to be a new website devoted to Turns-every-day!

I'm impressed with your free time, Freebird!

Thanks to Snow Bell and Stihlfree for a great day. ;D

Thank you Scotsman for leading the charge.  I was glad to visit that spot but I have since wiped the memory of where to find it from my feeble mind as the responsibility of such knowledge is too much for me to bare.
There is however one rock on the grassy knoll and I found it   ???

A great day with really good snow and a group of great skiers.  A special thanks to Snow Bell for being persistent about getting to the top of Ptarmigan Peak and thereby providing the highlight descent of the day. Also to Baldwin for all the trail breaking and to Stihlfree and Richard for the great company.

I also had the pleasure of meeting and skiing a run with the legendary Tim_Place and his partner. That Mr.Place sure knows how to lay down a sweet turn in powder. :)It was an...
Hey Freebird, thanks for the names. Sorry Greg but as the tradition goes I can't tell  where the grassy knoll is, only show but they are easy to figure out. You can see the tracks from the road.
The names are Carl, Tara, and Nate  :D
Yes, the grassy slopes are top secret but easy to find...
THE SNUFF CANON

Loaded and awaiting an unexpecting nostrel(s).
I'm thinking about heading up there this weekend.  Can you share any details about the location of those grassy slopes?  Or is that top secret.
Yeah, I was considering going up there too.  Then I checked the weather forecast and it called for 50 mph winds at Muir, so I decided not to go, especially after reading a trip report from Sunday.  I check the telemetry for Muir on Monday, here it is...

Nice trip, but snoslut, where are the pics of you hitting the snuff cannon at Prost!???!
that would be Randy Beaver and Brick making nice with what we had-dogs gotta get his props to!

Part Brick s*@t house, part pogo stick he be....
Glad you got some pics Scotteryx... my batteries froze up along with my hands, so the camera didn't do much good.   Damn those were some amazing winds!  The telemetry showed 60 to 70 mph at the time we were on the snowfield.  Was really glad to make it to the hut and get down.   As Dave said, we found the skiing to be much better than expected with really nice light and views of Adams, and those occassional pockets of blown powder.
hey scotsman, paul and i were up there on sunday too, and i had your shovel with me. at least i think it's your shovel - recovered from last years slush fest. you should let me know how i can get it back to you.

were you the guy pinning on a pair of circa 1985 atomic arcs. i haven't seen a pair of those in a long time.

boy, those were some superlative winds up on the muir snowfield...but i didn't think the skiing was that bad.

david
Nice shots of chutes ;)!!

Looks many magnitudes better than when I looked down (I believe) the same one 2 weeks ago......we're getting there.

Nice lines!
Tuesday, Nov 14 - fat skis not required.  6 inches or so of nice dry snow on top - excellent skiing.  Snowing light to moderate all day.  No wind, or even any visual signs of wind.
not unless you get yourself on an already existing snowfield...then it could be awesome.  but only if you have wide planks...it was wet, heavy, concrete...
Damn! Snow report for Baker says they had 96 mph wind yesterday and now have 15" on the ground. Not enough for me to make the trek up tomorrow I think.
glad none of you all seriously got blown off the mountain!  ;)
Thanks Jayme - both informative yet rather depressing
Well Randy's dog, Brick did his best to survive.  Me being the dog whisperer that I am, when we reached our high point Brick looked at me and was like WTF am I doing up here with you stupid people.  I need a thicker coat for this kind of s<$#.  I'm gonna dig a shelter and watch all your gear blow away. ;D

Jerm - Nope I ended up snow jumping instead, just below the ridge and out of that damn wind.  Nice to meet ya to!

Ha, that must have been Ari that took the header. He lost his helmet in the process. It probably got blown to Sedro Wooley.

snoslut, I was the guy in red that told you guys to relay the boots-on message to the others down on the ridge. Nice to meet you. How did your dog do? He seemed a little frazzled by the ice and wind.

Did you guys ski the grass all the way down to TL? I was tempted to, but walked down with Ari &YakNam instead. We ended up taking a second lap, and th...
Last night I saw the photos on the Whistler website of the recent storm.  Hopefully, a nice start to for the season.

Last season there was a thread concerning vandalism at the Elfin parking lot.  Is that still a concern ?
author=snoslut link=topic=8140.msg32576#msg32576 date=1194962443">Hey Kam, were you able to ski down to treeline??

a few meters short for me, but Skip, Cass, and Sarah made it no problem.  this new pair of skis i built is designed to last two days, and i'd like to get in one more day in before i leave.  ;D
I invented 'em (hippie speedballs, not hippies).

LeeL - from the narrow icey ridge on down to treeline was 4-6 inches.  Deeper in some pockets.  Above the ridge varied from wind sculpted ice to boot deep.  Once again deeper in some pockets.  With the wind it was a free refill kinda of day.

That guy on the ridge did take a good tumble before realizing to change into his ski boots.  But first he managed to climb back onto the ridge and try to change there. ???  I reached his friend and told her to change just below the ridge.
the wind gust knocked me straight on my can!  it hurt, but was worth it.  excellent skiing!!!
Scotteryx,
"Kick in the face" seems a bit harsh and aggressive after all it's their Ptex and if they want to abuse it, that's their prerogative, as long as they weren't affecting you or meadow stomping why the flame man?
Live and let live!
Aw you'se guys  :-[  It was great to catch up with you again Chris and to meet Stewie.  I thoroughly enjoyed our day as I like a challenge  ;D.  Seriously, any day in the mountains on your skis is a good one - visibility and skiable snow are merely incidentals  ;D

Hi Robie, long time no see!
Does this past photo of you at rainy Rainier sum up the experience.

Good job dude, never give up before the parking lot.
You passed us on your way down yesterday (I was in the group that Eric hiked up to chat with above that icy bluffs section).  We ended up turning around near 6,600-ft out on the western part of the Coleman Glacier where white-room conditions made further upward progress unappealing; the winds briefly subsided and the visibility slightly improved below us as we de-skinned for about 500 vertical feet of nice wind-buffed powder turns before traversing back toward the trail.  After arriving back at...
hey skinner
thanks for saying hi.. headed out tomorrow will let you know how it goes... cheers robert
Yo Jimmy,
Good on ya!! You were obviously making the rest of the vet's proud!!
Keep on getting to know that place so you a show us around when we come up.
Congratulations on your cover photo too.
The top photo from this trip report is today's cover photo over at Backcountry Magazine. Check it out.

Great day, great video.  Now I'm imagining a whole new level of gear to invest in.  I'm thinking an upgrade to a professional camera, a bigger, faster computer, movie production software...
Welcome to the group.  It's great to receive some visual insights about the touring up North.  For many of us, we only see the occasional promo videos of the heli operations.   Looking forward to more postings.
I'll post pics in this thread later with a link, but it was a boneyard!
Even saw the Nisqually Chutes for a brief moment, and there is no entrance right now (maybe now there is!). Let's hope what's falling now is the base for the year.

I saw a couple of guys yesterday milk it almost to the cars on their skis. I mentioned to Sergio that they should get an award for a "Great Job!", and then kick in the face for being such dumb asses. Oh well, their bases wi...
Howdy Scotteryx,
It was indeed me , Stewie and NickBC that you met at the 8K level. It was nice to meet you. Also it was indeed the NickBC who has frequented the Silcox Hut who skied with us.
He is a very fine gentleman and telemarker. ;D
Howdy Scotsman,
We must have run into you at the 8k level then right?

It was Sergio on his new split and I that I think leapfrogged with you down the patches.
Going again! Wow. My ski partner and I just bailed this morning from heading up 542 - it's going to be wild up there today. It's not terribly well correlated with Baker weather, especially down low, but Muir's already averaging 92 mph winds with gusts to 106, and the front hasn't arrived yet!
Are you still considering going to Baker on the 12th for more abuse, Scotsman? A forecast of a week of snow means that I will wait until next Saturday. Nick did the Silcox Hut trip several years ago, so you might have met him, Robie.
BillK:
sadly, i'm forced to extol the virtues of the great NWBC because of a realty deal gone wrong. You see i bought my house on spec, thinking that 2 or 3 years after the purchase  a mega-ski corp would come in, buy Shames, and  I'd be able to flip it (a la whistler) for enormous profits, retiring on the proceeds and buying a pass to Aspen. Much to my chagrin, the big mill closed down, forestry tanked, and Intrawest never came to town. So now you see my only hope is th...

Permission to view Rainer's photos denied,  I'd like to see them please!

Hmm - maybe he's set them up for private viewing only. I'll have to check with him.
scotsman,Hmm I'm thinking thats same same Nick that i know from silcox hut. If it is, I'm  sorry that i wasnt  there to tough it with ya. IT would have been worth it  just like you said.
