The Specter of the Brocken is a halo around the shadow of a climber cast onto the fog below. The halo itself is called the Glory. The name comes from a peak in Germany.

  there's a name for this, I think.

I've heard it called a "glory" and a "spectre of the brocken." I don't know the origin of the latter term, don't think I spelled it correctly, and have only seen it in one place.

Beautiful photo for a point and shoot, BTW.
No Crippled Creaky Crooner here!
Nice TR daveb.  I opted for Muir that day as it is much closer for me but it looks like you called it right.  I can not imagine that anyone anywhere had better conditions than you guys.  It serves to remind me what a great part of the planet we reside in.  Keep it up and I will look forward to reading your next TR.
Had to bring this thread back to the front ;)  Here's a link to a compilation of pics and TR that I put together.  It was great to meet everyone and I look forward to many more trips of the like...

DaleK,
Awesome pics...sooo jealous. How long was the day from the trail head back down? Thanks and way to go!
Good comments, Stugie. Worth remembering what the Ranger said.

I don't have much personal experience to share. That said, the few people I know who have either fallen entirely into a crevasse, or have punched scarily down partway into gaping holes, have said that it happened after fresh snow, they felt they could see the crevasses well (they saw open and quite apparent cracks  and/or there were clear depressions in the snow), but where they punched through was smooth...
As for the burton split it is good in powder but scary on groomers ( somethimes you have to take a groomer to get far in the BC) It seems to ride good but I would much rather have a normal board on technical lines but for access its easy and effective on another note the Burton interface sucks ass it gets frozen and sometimes it doesnt want to reconnect you usually have to take your gloves off to get the board back together in my opinion i a voile interface on a prior board would be the way to g...
Eric,

You have a voile interface on your face...er...
Ilovevermont-

i was talking to a ranger up there in may when we did Baker up the Coleman Glacier and he told me that most people take the crevasse hazards on the Coleman too lightly...knock on wood...the party in front of us had to rescue one of their members from a 35 foot fall.  People have died on that glacier.

After the summer, I have not been up there yet, but as with any glacier, it is the fall...Coleman will be more open than it was in the spring, and the new snow ca...
cjm720:  It took us 4 and half hours starting at 5400ft and ending at just under 10,200ft.  Roughly around 4800 vertical.  So not too fast or too slow either.

The burton split is Kyle's so I'll let him comment on that.  I for one am not a fan of the 1st generation interface.  The 2nd gens use the voile interface.  Much much better in my opinion.
Oh sorry, forgot about the amount of turns. We got in about 3000 feet of actual turns - but that included a second lap.
I don't pretend to know it all, but we were familiar with the area and we also had great visability. With not a HUGE amount of snow, the crevasses could be seen as depressions in the snow. That being said, we chose a more cautious and mellow route that put us out of most of the danger. We did keep harnesses on and had a rope at ready. In addition, we probed around our route on the way up.

I am sure that others may chime in on a safer or more proper way that we should have conside...
Are there any crevasses on that route? How turns did you get? Stellar pics, I wish I could have been there.  I sent the pics back to my friends and they are so jealous. I can't wait to get up there!!!!!!!
Wow! Looks like an amazing day.
A question from this new guy...
How do you avoid any crevasses that may have been snowed over?  This late in the summer (/early in the winter) are the crevasses just so big that they won't be snowed over or do you somehow know where to ski?

thanks for the education

I hope so too!!!!!!!!!!! Awesome shots Jason.

you need a cameraman! looks like you had to work pretty hard to get that one powder sequence. people are good about not letting a fellow tay'er go out alone, so try and hit up the boards for partners wanted. Shoot, if I were in town I would've been up there with you. thanks  for the great video, it really speaks more than a photo.  See ya out there!

Nice dude! Did you see any slides? How's the bonding/first base of the year look?

good bond, as good as you can wish for on the first 4 feet...except obviously on steep rock slab.  a few wet snow slides...and rollies half the size of a man that i set off.

of course it all hinges on what the weather does...but so far layers are bonded...mos...
It appears that number of people have either completed their first year of turns or are close to making the cycle. It will be nice to get some fresh blood on the year-round skier page.
I was one of the two boarders up there that day. We got above the weather right below muir and enjoyed being able to see for one hour. I thought I saw a baker crew jacket up there!! This is month 13 for me on my 1st tay...so you were right silas!!

You guys are so lucky to get out there, and so early at that! I was back East for 2 weddings and feel like I was at a funeral since there was so much snow back home and I was so far away! This weekend seems to be calling me and I will be poking around Muir and hopefully having the same goods you all did. Thanks for helping keep me sane and insane simultaneously while back east. Hope to catch up with all of you on the mtn soon!
We too had an amazing start to the season. Heliotrope Ridge/Coleman Glacier are where it was at! We started up a bit later than you guys did, but had a great trip none the less.  We too found the deep powder and not once did we hit anything lurking in the snow.
We chose the lines to skiers left of where you all skied (towards Colfax Peak). All the slots kind of made us nervous. Good on you for getting the goods!

Awesome powder, bright skies, and great friends. Oh, did I ment...
Hi Silas

Sorry I missed you- the Baker crew was a foursome (three guys and a woman); there were lots of folks around though!
cheers
Drew
Thanks for the post, awesome pics!

How do you like the Burton split?

How long did it take you from Paradise to Muir?

Nice to meet you all.  Hope we can meet up again!
Top as in where we were, or top as in Liberty Cap (then of course on to Columbia Crest)?
Get a map, otherwise it's none of your business.
Tele skiers in Minneshizzle?  Things have changed since I moved west...
What road and trail head do you access this through?
how many hours to the top?
I agree with both assessments of "bottomless" and will add one of my own.  When I worked at Schweitzer Mountain, and we received 100 inches of snow one Thanksgiving...it was truly bottomless.  120 inch base on dirt.  But there was no 'base'.  Hence I took off on a 30-35 degree slope, went strait down and only managed 10 mph, if that.  Pacific bottomless = Sucky bottomless.  Grew up in Montana and skied 30 inch 'dump' and still hit ice u...
Note to viewers: 'Nice Turns' was shortly thereafter followed by 'Faceplant'! The turning muscles still need more stretching...

A fun tour with the sun and fresh snow in the trees, it felt great to skin.

Korup, was the Baker crew you met a threesome?  I started about the same time as you, and also turned around at ~8000'+, the group I met walked up the trail to Pan Point, then put on skis.  I figured the dozen or so skiers and boarders I saw had to be going for turns all year.....

but does "a foot of bottomless powder" make sense? :) If it does, how so?

I dunno if it makes sense, but here's what it means to me: nothing under the powder until you hit ground.   Guess you (and others?) have a different name for that.   Or maybe I should have just said "a foot of powder".   "bottomless" is my enthusiasm to put a...
Oops... ::) I meant to say it blew in nicely on the North side of the gap.  It was a little rocky skiing the ridge down from the peak.  But it looked so nice in the sun and I couldn't resist.

Carl
It was indeed an awesome time up there. Great meeting and skiing with you all. Here is a link to my write-up on the TGR board, I have several pictures posted there as well. http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97078
I may be a Virginian who's never skied much powder, but does "a foot of bottomless powder" make sense? :) If it does, how so?

Wish I could've been there this morning!
yeah, just changed it from one picture of Jason to another picture of Jason ... thought the second one showed the depth of the pow pow a little better :)

great to ski with y'all....one hell of a day up there.
Wow! Great report but I'm jealous. I was there just last weekend (9/29-30) and I HIKED from Paradise up to Pebble Creek to ski a few laps and then HIKED back down. It's hard to believe that just one week later  you could skin up from Paradise and ski all the way back down...

I was visiting from Minnesota and came last weekend so I could get September and October turns in one trip. (Mission accomplished).

Great TR, looks like a blast!
I didn't get too many pics of ya Matt.  Sorry.  The ones that I did, your blended into the rocks.  Let me look at them again.  I might be able to manipulate them.  Or maybe next time.  We have all winter.  Plus we all kinda took off in our own directions.  Sure was nice letting go without a care in the world.
BTW orange, I like how that pic shows your tracks. We saw you guys up there on our way out. We were almost sure we had the mtn to ourselves. Good to see someone else skipping work.
We reached Muir at 3:00 and it was so so good all the way down to about 7k, when it wasn't the snow but the visibility that made the rest of the decent difficult. The fact that we were able to ski all the way to the car blows my mind. Bluebird and (consolidated) powder in early October is amazing. I only wish I hadn't forgotten my sunscreen.
Hey Pete A you changed your first photo to Jason.

Jason that photo of Zbo looks like its from November, like last thanksgiving.  Do you have a time machine your not telling us about? ;D

Your photos...lets just say its what I come to expect of you.
Glad you enjoyed dave et all. Oh, a new camera :) I want the d300.

I was glad to get them all up since I lost power during this o:) http://www.komotv.com/news/10288352.html

Funny how the power died before I heard the bang.
