I agree W/ Telemon. Saturday was wet low and great good up high but visibility was limited with very flat light and fog. Sunday was great. Glad we got there before the mob today.

What you see above is a great example of the contradictory nature of trip reports on sites such as TAY or TTPs. I have produced trip reports I would humbly describe as being excellent in regards to information and photography that generated nary a response.
Yesterday I tossed together something that I thought capsulized the day for me. I wasn't trying to be controversial. I don't like starting my day late and I don't like quiting early. The conditions made me look and f...

I hear them girls from the Shire are keepers. Congratulations!
Telemon!!! it was a pleasure to finally meet you!! next time with better planning we'll make a few turns together.
i was disappointed with the JOM reading: 100%. not good. i need more dirt, rocks, and twigs. next time for sure.
all-in-all it was a great day in the mountains. i'd commit without hesitation to running 1000 miles with my hands tied behind my back for the same conditions.
oh another thing that made

Ya, we didn't get up there until noon and left at 4.
Looks like you got a later start than me, at 7am at Chinook, I walked out on the snowpack, looked pretty thin and felt frozen and breakable, nothing as your nice pics represent. Way to go! Guess the early bird does not always get the worm.

ii wonder what kam's joy-o-meter registered!
Having skied from the car, the JOM was 100%. After a summer's worth of long hikes to snow, I'm happy for the return of it to the trailhead, however wet. That said, it definitely felt like November out there.
Good to meet you, Telemon, and all hopes the return to BC was smoother than the mornin...
Here's some pics taken from Chinook Pass today:

We had a big group of bachelor party goers, so we had low expectations to begin with. It got quite a bit colder after you left, Ema, and continued to snow heavily. We got a couple of nice laps down the blueberry chutes through heavy, wet snow, but I've skied a lot worse and didn't hit any rocks. Plus! It'll be a great base if it stays cold.
i concur with telemon. not worth the drive from seattle. wet heavy snow, and no visibility. i wonder what kam's joy-o-meter registered!
telemon, i think we ran into each other, we were the group of 3 who parked next to you...

Congrats, Telemon, on your 48th month!! I look forward to meeting you up at Whistler this coming weekend, especially after reading your TRs. Now, I just need to find me some crazy tie-tyed hat and have you autograph it...

Telemon,
congratulations on your 48 months. We all have bad days and a trip report should reflect the reality of the situation and doesn't always have to be sunny and upbeat. I enjoyed your honesty. Keep your tips up, tails down and goggles on as there's snow coming! YEEHAAA.

My feelings are the report was very informative, and thoughtful.
I did not know Kam was in town! Welcome back Kam!
Telemon was thoughtful to put his rant in an appropriate place-Random Tracks. Instead of laying all the details out about the border crossing in this thread.
Sounded like the snow and visibility was marginal comparing it to the telemetry, at least you got to see Kam and his group.
That is always a plus!

Word up...thanks for the report. I was thinking about going there on tuesday. Is there alot of winloaded snow at the crests?
I don't know about the worst TR of the year, but definitely the worst TR that I have ever submitted! Sorry, just not a lot of plusses on the day.
sweet! good to see the white stuff flying up there. now lets get some lift served open...
great report

Wow! Congrats - 4 years - I'm inspired. I'd still like to connect with you up in that area or on Steven's for some telemark lessons - one old guy to another. Let me know when you plan to head out again. It looks like we're heading to Paradise on Tuesday. If that works for you pm me.

It looks like you made the most of the light you had..thanks for the pics! I've gotta get out soon.
Thanks Marco. Tough day for shooting, but I'm not going to complain!
Snow Bell also offered alpine treckers for my spatulas. Spatulas plus alpine bindings plus alpine treckers and Adreneline boots could be the heaviest touring set up around and has a sort of peverse attraction I find irresistable.
It could be an antidote to my recent dynafit addiction. Bring them next time we go out and I'll try it. :D

It sure was a great day! We lucked out with the conditions. Quality snow, temps and visibility all came together for us. Judging by the telemetry, it looks like it rained after we left.
Many thanks to everyone involved. Scotsman for driving, Baldwin for cutting track and setting a solid pace, ect. ect. We were fortunate to run into Tim and company who were kind enough to share some rout info as well as some turns. All in all it couldn't have shaped up much better.

Yikes. And Scottie, when are you going to slow down enough to take some pictures. I've got a pair of alpine trekkers if you want to try touring in the those spatulas. That should slow you down. Can't wait to try them.
Looks a bit like my day earlier this weekend: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Y1J42DDpTA
so is styrofoam the preferred term for this snow? To me that indicates a certain amount of sublimation and hollowness...while that snow up there was quite soft and solid. How about wind-packed snow with rime and a touch of groupel on the side?

On the "run" to the left, there are significant rock piles towards the top to the right side
That is excellent advise hankj. The right side of the "run" to skiers left was exactly where I damaged my ski. I will assume that all of your words of wisdom are as accurate as this and I will take it easy until there is more coverage.
Then all bets...

one of my friends went into a rock field a little hot but at least he smiling when he pulled his head out of the snow... ;D I swear he has used up all nine lives and is now in double digits.
In two of the past three "seasons" (used loosely on TAY) I've taken fairly serious injuries (separated shoulder once, ripped rotator cuff the other time) riding...
That was us in the 4runner. We skied the Nisqually chute. Extremely boney but some nice snow/turns in spots.
I'll bet you guys will be seeking out some powder. Me guys will be actively practicing the high arts of parenting and husbandry. I want to head into the season with a strong positive time balance in the domestic account. You might think that easy as I am a full time dad but that only seems to raise expectations. Fortunately, the last two days have wet my beak enough that I should be held over until the next storm (as long as it is soon).

Hey Freebird,
I was the other guy up there, the one without rock skis that required more walking. :p I would have stayed longer to chat, but with all the wind, I couldn't hear a word you were saying. I've never seen the ledges so wind-scoured and snowless. Telemetry shows 50-75mph! You got outta Muir fast, and just the right time, the cloud ceiling was dropping fast and my first 500' of turns were blind. Pretty nice after that.

Wow, between you, Scotsman, Snowbell and others, there's going to have to be a new website devoted to Turns-every-day!
I'm impressed with your free time, Freebird!

Thanks to Snow Bell and Stihlfree for a great day. ;D
Thank you Scotsman for leading the charge. I was glad to visit that spot but I have since wiped the memory of where to find it from my feeble mind as the responsibility of such knowledge is too much for me to bare.
There is however one rock on the grassy knoll and I found it ???

A great day with really good snow and a group of great skiers. A special thanks to Snow Bell for being persistent about getting to the top of Ptarmigan Peak and thereby providing the highlight descent of the day. Also to Baldwin for all the trail breaking and to Stihlfree and Richard for the great company.
I also had the pleasure of meeting and skiing a run with the legendary Tim_Place and his partner. That Mr.Place sure knows how to lay down a sweet turn in powder. :)It was an...

Hey Freebird, thanks for the names. Sorry Greg but as the tradition goes I can't tell where the grassy knoll is, only show but they are easy to figure out. You can see the tracks from the road.
The names are Carl, Tara, and Nate :D
Yes, the grassy slopes are top secret but easy to find...

I'm thinking about heading up there this weekend. Can you share any details about the location of those grassy slopes? Or is that top secret.
Yeah, I was considering going up there too. Then I checked the weather forecast and it called for 50 mph winds at Muir, so I decided not to go, especially after reading a trip report from Sunday. I check the telemetry for Muir on Monday, here it is...
