Hey again TAY people, wow what a crew. Some answers for you:
danhelmstadter - well as soon as i figure out how to bloody put pics up, i will. yep it is a very cool area and pretty damn easy access for about 6 months a year anyway.
zap - thanks for the welcome, see above about the photos. i'm a luddite, so i figure my buddy guido (who coincidently/apparently also just stumbled upon this site) will figure out the photo thing first.
Leel - yep nass road (or Nisga'a Hwy #118...
Guido! thank god your safe, I was worried sick...
hey fancy meeting you here man! I suppose you saw my posting (oh yeah it's gary here), be damned if I can figure out how to put photos up though! I don't have any of those fancy shamnsy "web pages" or photo journey shop you-face-tube-book things. Be sure to let me know when you figure out the photo thing. Anyway had an amazing day with Brad, Nyree, Christine (who I'm very happy to report still calls me "Thor&quo...
Hi, About the binding check Lou Dawson's site wild snow. He has the best mod Ive seen so far, outside of buying Dyna fits anyway.
Dan- I had the same problem with my old Fritschi's, it finally was the end of them. The heel popped out, and I fell forward and twisted, which sheared the metal mountain plate on the toe and broke the binding. Fortuanetly I was coming back in bounds at Steven's Pass so I only had to one-leg it to the bottom of the lift. The new fritschis have fixed that problem by creating a spring loaded piece that flexes against the heel riser/clip thingy. Hard to explain, but I have a pair and it wo...
Yo Dan,  Last Sunday I had  sublime pow at Bach..  Skinned up from main lodge to top of Pine Martin lift  to see why there wasn't  a track (Cinder Cone was tracked out as it is 'envogue' and next to parking lot...good for me I must say.......) to be had on any run that I could see.  On the skin up it seemed like (and looked like!)  the run would be amazing.  Only one way to find out.  After about 250 untracked turns of 7'' to1...
Neptune Mountaineering in Boulder mounted them, I contacted them about it just before I drove up here, as it has happened in the past, they said heel lock was worn, and tried to order me new one, haven’t heard from them since.
I find that it happens mostly in crusty snow, or pow, which can act as a lift on the heel piece, and it doesn’t take much for it to rise. Summer corn was no problem, it will occasionally pop up on landings too, I think this is due to the mounting issue you are talkin...
Dan, this can be a mounting issue. If you have a Freeride or older Fritschi, make sure that the heel riser unit is properly placed. It's hard to explain in text so I wont. The jist of it is that it needs to be placed correctly (4 mm's can make the difference) so when the ski flexes the main part of the binding doesn't travel too far (slide) in the heel catch and release. Did you mount them on your own? PM me if you aren't aware of this issue.
It's clear to me what it means when your heel is popping out of your Fritchi AT bindings - your feet want tele bindings.  Free the heel, free the mind!
There was only a couple inches at the bottom (enough to skin), and then a couple feet at the top.

The best coverage/least rocks was from the chute that heads down to the hairpin.

I don't know though after the heat.

- Matt

Hi Dan - good to hear you're carrying the torch out Oregon way.

So about your Fritchis - a friend of mine had a hell of a time with a pair one season a couple years ago.  Kept popping out.  One run up on Loveland Pass he popped out unexpectedly and took a header into the snow.  He was wearing a helmut but it still gave him a severe concussion and we had to walk him down the hill and drive him to Loveland ski area emergency shack.  Sent that boy to the h...
Thanks for the A-Team status Don.  I pity the fool who touches my chains!

Despite the minimal visibility on the Muir snowfield which held the camp shrouded in the white abyss, it was surely a great day to be on the side of a volcano.  Usually I head to the hills (away from the resort) to escape the crowds but this was a pleasant exception.  From the 12 passanger van of snowriders to the 2 hour stint at the Longmire staging area to the procession up Pan Point, the comrad...
How much snow would you estimate there was at the trailhead and at your high point?  We are thinking about heading out to Washington Pass this weekend and trying to guess what coverage will be like after the warm weather this week.

Got to buy me a drink before you can start talking to me like that.

It'd be fun to get out some time this winter Rusty -- always fun to share tips and tricks.
It was great to meet everyone in the party! The scones and bottomless coffee in Longmire really made the trip extra special!!

Pretty good day overall for being October 21!!!

Thanks Again Rusty Knees!!

Rusty Knees - Congrats on completing your first year!
Good to see some more representation from British Columbia on TAY. We are definitely a minority here.
Funny that you describe him as "aggressive" though.

I was going to describe him as "Hot" but since we haven't been introduced yet, he probably would have gotten the wrong idea.
Marcus telemarks better than I walk.  Funny that you describe him as "aggressive" though.  He has learned to do what I never had the confidence to do on teles: utilize speed and power (and a little cunning?) to get through crappy snow.  But despite the blackness of my AT-skiing soul, it's nearly worth it when he's fighting the face-plant in Cascade concrete.  Nearly.  :)
Park at mile 20, go back down the road (away from the gate a few hundred feet) to where the river comes close to the road. There is a log there - cross it to a gravel bar. There is another log in front of that - cross it also and follow it to the very end. The trail begins right off the end of the fallen tree.

Anyhow, from there, the trail rises steeply.
Fantastic TR.

Now for the question.  I'm looking to climb Eldorado this weekend (weather window is thur, fri, sat) Looking online I can't get any good info on where off the cascade river road the trail for Eldorado begins, it's important because it looks like the Cascade river road is closed at mile 20.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Brandon
Sweet, thanks for the report! Only two more weeks untill I move back to Terrace from the evil concrete jungle of Van.

I hiked up Wesach in august and can't wait to ski up there. How far can you drive up there at this point.

Cheers Dave
and someday...soon...the real stash will be discovered.  I've cross referenced views of the glacier from the original "stash" post with my own innate knowledge of topo maps and mountain spirituality...i'm honing in on it as we speak... i will soon know all....i will soon ski all...

Hi ya'll. I'm a BC skier from BC. Love the fact that there is a place in cyberspace for all you freaks. I did have a streak of 48 mo once... sigh. Anyway I get out most months and up here there are lots of possibilities. Latest was last Saturday in an area about 1.5 hours drive from Terrace (about 1000km N of Vancouver). Scattered clouds after a week of cold grey wetness finally allowed...
It's great to see some pics from colorfull Colorado, looks like the coverage isn't all that bad either, although the wind is wicked up there above the trees, your lucky if there is any snow on/near the divide, even in late winter.

What Colorado lacks in quantity, it certainly makes up for in quality.

Welcome to the group.  Looking forward to the photos.  It is great to get reports from different regions.
Wow, that looks like a really cool area! I'd love to see some pictures and more reports.
The Nisqually Chutes were incredible! It was great to see so many people and to meet new ones.
Thanks for the good time!
author=Rusty Knees link=topic=8010.msg32005#msg32005 date=1193190593]The A team got to about 9000, and practiced their white out, flat light bumpy snow ski practice.  The B's got to the top of Pan point just as the first folks were heading down.  (Who was the aggressive tele guy heading down in the first wave through Panorama's main chute?  I'm a fan!  Will work for lessons.)

Heh... thanks.  I think that might have been m...
Yeah rusty knees, the weather was pretty good, a little fog in and out and some snow in the am, then it turned warm and some rain on the way down. Toby T, your tracks inspired us to hit the gully. It was tough where your sluff had run but still soft to skiers right of your line along the trees.
Thanks for welcoming me y'all!

What...No naked skiing?

Nahh,  the shrinkage factor was much too great under these conditions.  I'll have to wait for the next naked-skiing season.  ;D

Nisqually Chute was ridiculously good with windbuff explosions galore

Only one week earlier it wasn't quite there...but this weekend was $$$$$$$
Nice, you may have skied the nice gully that Matt and I dropped the day before. Did you follow tracks? We were surprised at how filled in the line was given the surrounding coverage...
Hey!  I was totally conflicted whether to go north or south.  Sounds like both directions provided new snow.  How was your weather?  Welcome aboard, or welcome aski.
What...No naked skiing?

Hmm, gate was open at 7:45AM Saturday, and snow on the road, Cass?
Yeah, we thought there might be a long delay at the Longmire gate Saturday morning, but we were pleasantly surprised to find it open.  However, we did see several cars in the ditch on our way down the road in the early afternoon.  Here’s what the Paradise road looked like

I'll chip in a few pics (just thumbs since we're pushing the image quota):

yeah, blissful to have winter like this already.
The next day was more wind and even less vis but in it's own way a winter wonderland.
somehow I still managed to be bestowed more freckles  :)

Silas, wasn't this TR from Sunday, October TWENTY-FIRST?

Yup, d'oh!   Hmm, gate was open at 7:45AM Saturday, and snow on the road, Cass?  Rangers took their safety patrol responsibility more seriously on Sunday I guess.
Silas, wasn't this TR from Sunday, October TWENTY-FIRST?  Otherwise lots of folks are:
-playing hooky from work, and
-posting with a time machine.  ???
Alisa, yes we did park at the latrines.  The run literally lead straight to them.  How convenient, huh?  It sure was a winter wonderland up there.  Wish it was always that way!  I can't help but post a couple more pics.  :D
Echoing Stugie,

Congratulations on your impressive streak!  10 years is a great achievement.  I'm hoping to get there someday, although I've got a ways to go yet (on month 23 currently).  Let's hope the recent snowfall serves as the base to a great season ;)
I was out with a group of 4 near Paradise on Saturday, and saw a few other groups also out enjoying the snow storm.  Snowing hard during the entire outing and "white room"/windy conditions deterred us from ascending above Glacier Vista.  Found some nice, albiet short runs lower down with excellent light powder up to almost 2 feet deep in places, though the combination of flat light/near zero visibility/uneven terrain-small gullies-drop-offs made for some amusing tele face-pla...
Looks like WA Pass picked up some new snow since the previous weekend...nice work getting in the turns despite a thin snow cover.
Dave on the 4th crossing bridge. Always a fun endeavor
Well ,I was in the middle of my response post to MARy G. I guess Ron summed up it up pretty well.   But I am wondering what kind of alcohol you would be using to bribe me?
Hopefully we will keep getting some snow  and the stash question can be put off till next late spring/summer.
The pleasures of Paradise are many.

paul and dave--sounds like you guys had a great trip, and had the place to yourselves!  sweet.  8)
yeah, guys...nothing but the best!  great pics and video too--you guys know how to do it up!  i'm jealous that you had to wear sunscreen.
