One more tardy addition - Rainer posted some great photos of the trip. His titles include a lot of good placename info too.
Permission to view Rainer's photos denied, I'd like to see them please!
The conditions were just as Scotsman described. We went all the way up to Muir and it was incredibly cold.
NWAC telemetry said the temp at muir was about 17 F with average winds in the mid forties--making the temp with wind chill about -5 F! A little too cold for windswept hardpack, but it was good to get out and get above the clouds.

Oh, I should add that I was considering skiing on the more sheltered Patch side but there was ( as should be expected) a very well developed wind slab on that aspect which varied from 4 to 8" thick and slid very easily on the base layer and I did not consider it a safe option today.
There are some dangerous lee slope conditions at the moment IMHO so be careful.

SHHHH....keep it down about Shames and NW BC. There are thousands that visit this site. You don't want Terrace overrun by visitors or, worse, yuppies and realtors. :) :) :) Enjoy the quiet while you have it!
Cheers, Bill

Dear Tayers I have manged to convince NWBCer that I am indeed a coach of a Norwegian female VB team. I now have to live up to the lies I have told.
If there are any of you out there who could pass for Norwegian Volleyballers, FEMALE, please, please let me know or he's going to find out what a loser I really am. Help! :D

Who knew!! That was fast, I never considered that the coach and power hitter of the norwegian girls VB team were also TAY devotees. Happy to report that the Norwegian ladies will indeed be house sitting for me (guess I'll have to get more corp passess though). Y'all should still come up here and check out the goods!
Great photos...ton of snow up there! Your offer is almost enough reason to quit my job! I've always wanted to spend some time up there...been to Vancouver and Whistler a ton of times but not farther up. Shames looks like a fun little hill. Anyhow, have a fun trip and thanks for the posts from up north.
I guess I should mention when I plan on taking off eh...

Good job on that N. Clark Headwall!!!!!!! Have thought about maybe giving it a go ( of course in sussed out stable conditions....). How about a story about that and some pics...this way mabe I can vicariously live the experience and not have to scare the living "s" out my self!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By the way, has anyone heard about (or have....) the emergency locator called SPOT? www.findmespot.com I go mostly by myself and was thinking this thing might be a good idea if anybo...

Wy'east is f-ing beautiful in the spring. You can get it in pow, I'm sure you know what you're looking for. I have seen some full width crowns up there in the winter.
Newton-Clark Headwall is a steeper, more interesting outing with a bit of a double fall line at the top. One of the funest descents I've done.
The patrol director met his demise in the natural halfpipe directly under the chairlift a few hundred vertical from the top of the lift (anyone wh...

Hey Dan--Wy'est is way cool for sure . Done it a couple of times...once from T. lodge to summit and then downclimbed past Newton Clark Headwall to top of wy'east (how ever you spell it...). The other way was from main Meadows restort lot. I think that N. Clark Headwall has your name written all over it, too. Saw tracks down it when we did the treck from the summit to the top of W'yeast (Indian name I believe......)...have not done it myself but looks pretty cool!!!!!!!! Wy...

Hey Mad Dog: Is the Jarvis Jump that lip at the top of the Patch?
No, not quite, this Jarvis Jump is "geezer" friendly ;). That lip at the top of the patch has really grown, if you unexpectedly caught it in a white-out it would certainly be a big surprise.

It might have been a little "icky" but the snow was really quite nice and we had such a fun group it just didn't matter. You should have seen the group going over the "Jarvis Jump". ;D. Some nailed the landing, and others.........well, let's just say, had some rather spectacular landings ;).

Nice trip, I've done it a couple times in the spring. Both times from the Hood River Meadows parking lot, this one adds up to 6000' of vert.

I ran into a boarder on his way down who said it did clear around above 8-9000’ (might have been preston?).
Hey, that was me, nice to bumb into you.
Here's a pic a friend, who happened to be at Camp Muir, sent to me. See, I wasn't full of it, there actually was decent vis up there ;D.

much better than what awaited you up here dan. Glad you had a good time.
Nice work Dan! I was up on the White River Glacier on Sunday and the Wy' East sure looked good from there (down lower looked a little spotty though). That face combined with the Superbowl is a sweet ride in the spring - one I hope to do this year. It does get pretty windloaded in the winter - I think that's why the lift in Heather Canyon is so far down (to keep away from the huge avys).
It was so nice to be in mountains that I never noticed the drizzle 8).
JibberD, that is is 24 months ALMOST turns all year...
Just means I get to hangout with the kooks...
And the only reason MY WIPEOUT didnt get a 10 - the slope was too shallow to ski out of it...
Nice driving STEWIE!!! I hope you get to drive in snow next time.

Whoa I think someone in the pictures forgot their skis.
Not saying it's not possible, Dan, but that aspect can get really windloaded and is likely to have serious avy danger with powpow. Maybe after a just-right spring storm. Easy to get with reliable corn, though.
Way to get out there, though - sounds fun. Wish I were going skiing.

Went up on the skyline trail on Sunday... put on skins up at around 6000’. Had to boot it on a few sections between there and Pebble Ck. I too was looking for that break in the clouds, better visibility and so I continued up to just about 8000’ looking for it… never saw clearing or blue sky, in fact seemed to get thicker at times up there. Chris, way to go on the 48 streak. Alisa with 24. I love it!
Keep the reports coming.

prestonf,
We where pretty sure it was clear up there but we did not have enough"party in the mouth", left in the flask to summon up the energy to continue higher. Glad you got some and as you say it was confusing in the mank down below. ;D

Hey, I was up there on Sunday as well and went up to Camp Muir. The weather was pretty meh down low, but above the clouds (8000 ft) it was sunny and clear, although windy. The ride down was soft, but once back in the clouds confusing!!!

Hey!
This is my home skiing area, and through the holidays, I will be up there quite a bit. I am planning on heading up for Thanksgiving weekend, come ski with us! PM before the holiday if you want to connect.
Thanks for the invite! I'll send you a PM when I have a better idea of what my schedule will be like around that time.
Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. Yeah, I'd like to meet up for a day trip. That's cool, I can break trail for you old guys, even though you all could probably smoke me!

someone told me the baker ruth is "Ruth Mountain" whereas the mountain with said name in MRNP is "Mount Ruth". To me this seems backwards but...was this person correct?
You were definitely heading towards Ptarmigan Ridge when you passed the junction sign, so we'll leave it at that. In a month or so when the snow coverage is better, several day tours are possible. A popular circle route is upper parking lot to Artist Point, along the south side of Table, through the Galena Chain lakes, over Herman saddle and back to the car across Bagley Lakes. It could be done either way. There are variations of this route that include climbing on to Table Mountain from ei...

For those interested in night photography, there is a piece on this guys site for the nikon d200: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d200/d200-long.htm
Why my night shot had the red glow is because I didn't allow the camera to take the dark frame (using long exposure NR) which is a second shot that takes as long as the primary exposure. I'll give this a try when more snow falls and I have time.

We were up there on the 31st and it was bad enough that we turned around after walking halfway to Pan Point and went for a recon hike around the Tatoosh.
Right at Reflection Lakes, there was enough snow on the road to have a couple skin races, and we creeped up into the trees for a look but it was pretty thin!

It was a pleasant surprise that my party met you and your brother last Saturday. We had hoped to check out an area that was new to all of us (Shuksan Arm). Too bad that you were not ready to do some serious skiing when we arrived. I know that it was pretty early. ;) Though they were not particularly long, the slopes around your camp held some smooth turning snow. You will have to come back for some light weight, all-day skiing trips. Besides my TAY TR, I posted another version elsewhere with mor...
Steve,
Welcome to the group.
One of the more important items to mention now that you have joined the group is that "breaking trail and allowing old people to have fresh tracks is standard backcountry protocol". Honest, ask Ron.

Nice jump Ronj, very impressive too since I know how heavy that pack of yours is. Way to show off those tree trunk legs doing their thing.

I read a book one time, something about aerodynamics(?)- haven't read one since- unless they have pictures. But it was saying to change direction you increase the wind load. So thinking about what you might carry in your pack that might be a somewhat flat surface, predicting your height and weight, I'd suggest you need a metal surface approximately 4"x8". When you get in the air, hold the metal container in it an extended arm. This will help you turn i...
