"The pursuit of happiness" is only mentioned in the Declaration of Independence, alas. Sounds like a good day with educational snow conditions.

Telemon and Scotsman- I too have found it most enjoyable to Ski Sunday and know I have the option of coming back and doing it again on Mon., Tues., Wed., Thurs., etc.
Adjusting to unemployment is easier when the snow is falling.
Took me about a week to come to terms with the fact I am officially a ski bum as of Nov. 1st.
Robie showed me enough options up around Chinook to keep me busy for awhile. But right now it is snowing outside my door so I may not have to travel far tomorrow...

We were able to ski about half way down, so it really was only about a 20 minute walk down. The moonlight and headlamp skiing from Symphony to the Gondola midstation was very fun, because in addition to the views we got fresh groomed slopes all the way. Your lift ticket dollars at work.
Please come up for Baker some time, and let me know if it would help you to stop over in Bham coming or going.

Jayme, great to meet you in the middle of the alpine on a very cool day, and good fun pictures and video. Thanks for posting it. Hoping for more adventures soon.
That kinda looks like Cayoosh Peak, but BC is a very, very large place...
Didn't make it to whirlwind due to lack of experience in the area...or a partner with said experience. But it got tracked up and it looked really good. From as close as I got, Fissile didn't look ready quite yet...

The first time I skied Hood it was through the Pearly Gates. I wouldn't recommend it really. To find it in skiable conditions meant going in the fat part of the year. This also typically means hundreds of people a week are climbing it (I'm talking late April-Early june). The bootpacks are sooo deep, it's a whole new objective hazard. Not to mention the piles of death cookies from the melting rime off the cliffs. To get it filled in would mean a lot of recent snow, therefore back t...
Nice work. Shows good coverage on the glaciers
I would like to say/think that i would still turn around. if it had slid, than there would be a real possibility that a secondary slab/p.r. could cut out, endangering any rescuers.
However it is often hard to turn around once one is "in gear" and an exuse to justify turns (such as haveing a beacon,,(but did they?)), I may have kept going, especially if I had'ent skiied it before. The reasoning of ambition is often irrational.

Levitation? Sharp horns? Stash worthiness? If you weighed 10 lbs. I could swear you were a little demon...hence the lucifer reference...lol!
Wow! so 3am at home checking and writing TR's. Hardcore! Thanks for the company, I had a great time!
And just for the record, Volcanogrrl's pack was way heavier than mine!!

Fascinating report, Dan, thanks for sharing, especially about the turn around in the old chute. So for discussion purposes, do you think you would have ignored the shouts of the on lookers if you had a beacon? I'd like another solo skier's thoughts on that one...

Great job on the pics and video, Jayme!
What an awesome trip. Beautiful scenery. Saturday was a bit gray, but warm. It was really fun to have "company" out to our little camp and meet some more TAY folk.
Friday I skinned out to meet Jayme and completely underestimated the distance and effort it'd take to get there. I had a harder time trying to find my way out of bounds (easily) than anything else. Had to start skinning from the gondo...

Oh my gosh, you had to hike out? Rough! We were wondering how you all fared. It sure was fun to meet everybody, what an excellent trip. A highlight of my skiing career thus far... I'd love to ski with any of you again, anytime.
Bluebird 3 of 4 days. see new post and video.
way to get the turns in CO! Nice TR!
I really wanted to join your group on this trip. I have never ventured out to Sing Pass. After following the weather forecasts all week, I made the decision that the potentially poor views would not justify the expense of driving for 3 hours each way and the gondola ticket. I guess that I did not make a wise decision. A friend ,who skied the Singing Pass and Cowboy Ridge on Saturday, had a great day in largely untouched snow and reasonable vis. The only thing missing was the bluebird conditions...
Wow Dan, looks like fun. The crux looks kind of knar. I think it usually fills in later in the year and is skiable, depending on conditions/timing and can be quite fun. I was up on Saturday, and the weather started out nice, but turned poorer around noon with no vis up high. We had planned on possibly heading up towards the Hogsback, but ended up riding the Palmer, whcih was nice. Should be good up there in a few weeks after this week's dump :)
Mount Baker rocked!! There was a ton of blow downs on the trail but the snow and weather conditions were great all day. The ski down was a blast!! I will post my TR soon.

hey Greg, thanks! It's all about the touring here. The resort itself only has 1600 vert, a double chair and a T bar. No on-hill accom, sparse I'll tell you - but oh the snow...
The leftovers are rotten . . .
Windblown, breakable crust and a lot of frozen crud. At least from Pan Point. The wind was so strong we stopped and turned around because the snow just wasn't worth the effort. What a disappointment after yesterday's champagne brunch at Chinook.

Nice pix and report. I used to live in Ketchikan, AK, and knew people who flew to the nearest airport to ski your local pistes. (Shames Mtn.?)However, your nice touring terrain looks very enjoyable! Keep up the good work...
Thompsons had four or five good turns up high (wind protected by trees?) then wind compressed trap crust, ugh! We bailed for the car and got nice stone grinds on the trail, walked the final 600' vertical. Thursday and Friday provided no such bad snow in PowderBowl and north slopes of Naches Peak. Great light powder all three days, good exercise, good friends, no complaints.
Sunday update: good snow this day too, just a bit less of it. Pics attached from Thur...

A couple of those turns on Cowboy Mtn were mine. It was pretty fun snow for how much coverage was there.
Silas, Are you using your new Iphone now for real time TR ? Send photos :)
hehe... yeah, guess we live right up here ;) I'll send some your way since it's snowing again here (have to ski trees tomorrow), shucks. On the 21st it was -7 to -3 (C) est (varying with change in altitude) on the 18th there was a slight inversion going on so temps were a little warmer higher. Likely getting down to -10 at night in the alpine when it's clear. A little warmer in town now (about -2 and snowing today).

NWBC'er,
You've got enough snow , send some down to us! ;)
Great pictures, the terrain looks absolutely amazing. How cold is it up there right now and what can I expect in Mid-Jan when I am up there?

My brother and I there on lift serve side Crystal 23rd also. Went up via Deer Fly / Iceberg. Also went over to see the new Northway lift top. A lot of different aspects were crusty in one way or another. The chutes right of Northway Pk in particular which you'd think would be immune to both sun and wind had some unpleasant windslab. Better skiing was found in Green Valley particularly north facing edge. But a lot of the elevation gained to ski here was pretty much wasted on way down. Based...
Edit: I added words on conditions and changed the pics.
Overthhills ,
Nice to see you. Congratulations to Tangerine for her 1st year of TAY.May her streak continue. ;D

Thank you thank you guys for great company on an awesome day. Chris, how unfortunate that we missed out on that breakable crust you were so expectant of . . . hey though, all was not lost, I think there were about five turns of such. Of course, we could use some more coverage, but you know you must have graduated as a backcountry Tayer on rock skis when you think to yourself: "Hey, those willows look skiable!" ;D ;D Great day!!!

Such a bummer we didn't get the expected trap-crust skiing all day ;) Glad to be able to milk a sunny powder day out of Chinook Pass before the winter closure with a fun group.

Telemon, I'm discovering that the employment thing was vastly overated and got in the way of the " pursuit of happiness", promised to me by the Constitution. You will find the adaptation to mid week ski bum surprisingly easy.

Good turns were had! 7-8" of old fresh with significant surface hoar. Best part was that a stable base is forming on the N and NW aspects. Nice folks on a good slackcountry day.
This is the autumn of milking the extended days in the passes that are usually closed by now....

The point is I still don't know how to ski breakable crust. Hopefully I never will or have to !.
Thanks for the call Chris,
Great tour and good to see Michael and Sidney!
Looks as though others are not seeing the wind pack, maybe it was an illusion? NOT
I like when were removing the skins and every motion seemed to cut another layer of wind pack that made it difficult to keep position on the hill.
Chris mentioned the trail up and it is pretty rocky on the lower approach, really hard to descend slowly to avoid the rocks on the lower portion of the trail.

Glad to hear it was still good! We were guilty of thrashing a bunch of the area last Tuesday. It sounds like it was still good.

Nice seeing you guys yesterday. The wind slab sounds pretty scary. We saw nothing like it up in the Bear Gap area but we were below the ridge in areas more sheltered from wind. Just unconsolidated powder with a nice layer of hoar on the surface. But there were all kinds of people up on the King, some even solo and skiing into avalanche basin . I would think that if there is a slab in Bullion Basin there could be one in Avalanche basin as well. ??? The hoar frost was...

That kind of talk is starting to sound inspiring! If you're self employed, can you lay yourself off, I wonder? And still stay married?

Nice pics, and that terrain looks amazing. Wish we had terrain like that here in Oregon.
Thanks for the report. My in laws have a house at Lake Cushman and we almost headed up there after chowing down on Turkey dinner to ski Ellinor.
