There was a ski area there that closed in the 70's.  It was a Washington State Park I think.
There are still some remnants of riblets and the foundation of the lodge that burned down etc.

Check out the lost ski area web site.  It's a good way to find places to backcountry ski.  There's an old ski hill in Trout Lake as well.

Wasn't there a ski area on Satus pass some time ago?

Oh Yeah the Syncline area, seems like I've seen pictures of people skiing there.
Thanks for the nice welcome to this site everybody.  It's a refreshing  to find a friendly internet site.

Wind and Dog mountain sound great!  I've been eyeballing Mt Defiance for years, but man what a long haul to get in there.  Although, maybe there is access from the roads on the North side?  Anybody skied it?

Since I live near Goldendale, I mainly go up to Satus pass and ski the Simcoes.  There is some really nice ridge line skiing...
NICE!!!!!!  Looking foreward to your future tr's on this area.  With rock skis one can find some pretty good areas with a little imagination...Black Butte near sisters can be pretty good with a low snow year and beater skis........
Nice report - it looks like an excellent ski. I have often thought that the Mosier Syncline would be pretty nice if not too wind affected. I went up to Bennett Pass on the 1st and found many good turns. I also live in the Gorge, though further West (in WA) and have done a few trips on the back side of Wind Mountain (BC patterned skis only) and some nice tours up near Willard. During the last big storm (4 years ago) I was able to take many runs and get in many good turns on the power line cut. A...

I often let my dogs chew the snowballs out of their toes.  Problem is, they deplete their fur of its oils so the problem gets worse and we get slower and slower...

If not booties then the commercial stuff is called "Musher's Secret".  It is found all over the net if you search on it.  The homemade version is as follows, scale accordingly and keep it warm in the field:

3 lbs. Vaseline
50 to 70 mL Betadine
1 lb. lanolin
0.5 lb. gly...
Out dog has pretty short hair - he is a rotty german shepherd mix.  Subsequently never had a problem with snow in his paws.  He does get very cold if we stop for extended periods or stay overnight.  He has spent a few too many nights in my sleeping bag, so a dog coat is in the works.  I have seen his paws get a bit cut up in hard snow conditions, but nothing too bad.

Some folks had some ideas about snow in the paws here:
http://www.turns-all-year.com/skiing_sn...
How do you keep your cutie's paws clear of snow?

Hannah is my old Neufoundland.  She only rides on shallow, short, warmer days since she stopped dead and refused to move a few Novembers back.  However, I took her out at Chinook on a cold day a few weeks ago.  After repeatedly skinning over her in the trail as she stopped to clear her paws, I tried duct tape.  She was not having that.

Any ideas?

Glad I was talked out of Bullion, then:(  I knew better deep down inside the pit of my don't-even-think-about-it-stomach.

Wow.

Here is this evening's report:

I saw these guys drop into Union Creek.
Check your PM and call me for details.
Joe

Great picture of that dog of yours! Great dog good to semi-meet you guys on the trail!
I saw these guys, can give you details to narrow your search.
Check your PM.

For all those who were in Bullion Basin on Dec 1st, Looking for anyone who would have seen a group 3 snowboarders: 2 on snowshoes, 1 on a splitboard going out for an overnight.  Hoping for a last seen point or any words that were exchanged that would help with the search:

http://www.thenewstribune.com/news/updates/story/221828.html

shoot me a pm or email if you have anything.

-Thanks.

I just read that the two hikers were buried in the snow lake area by Alpental. One person did survive. Condolences to their families.

I did hear something on NPR either yesterday or this AM about a couple of hikers who died in an avalanche in the past coupe of days. News didn't say what area other than the North Cascades and didn't report any other details. Sad to hear.

This tr seems to have generated some interest so I thought I'd post answers

- It can take up to 6 hours to skin in if you have to get in from the road.  Some parties have had to take overnight trips if trailbreaking is hard.

- It took us a bit under 3 hours but we could drive high

- the map is from Garmin and is from software called Mapsource
Yo Slo-Steve, yup I was a Coug (94-98).  Never rode around Moscow Mt. but I did shoot down some X-mas trees down, up there.  Hit up Schwietzer, Red, 49, Red, Silver (when they got enough snow to not ride the gonjola down).  Never hit up Spokane though.  Kamiak & Steptoe Butte though my memories are hazy.  The Pullman golf course had some sweet booters with hard liquor bottles lining the top.  Snowboarding on campus was fun too, but had to watch out for campus po...
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Right on.
That sounds nice. I've also thought Table Mt and Dog Mt in the gorge would be fun to check out. Table Mt would be a long hall in but Dog Mt is realistic. I've also skied Silver Star Mt, not really in the gorge but one worth checking out.

I'm sure there are more places if you used some imagination.
That's super sweet pabloson.  I love creative stuff like that!

Hey snoslut, are you a coug?  Where did you ski over there?  Moscow mountain?
Thanks for the picture.  My dog's name is Lily.  Nice meeting you on Sunday White Salmon, I'm assuming you are the one who has gone to the light side as well, with the sled dog?

Hey corn_dog.  Let me explain...  or maybe not!  Anyway, I might be able to take a week day or afternoon off for some lift skiing in the next couple weeks if you're interested.  Or I guess it doesn't have to be lift skiing.
That pic brings back fond memories.  Reminds me of riding in the Palouse.  Thanks!
Yeah I got something to add.  I'm stuffed!  Just got done eating my 2nd plate at our holiday party and going back for 3rds!  I need to build up some more insulation.

Breaking trail on Sunday only looked painful.  What was painful was watching those skiers wiz up the hill behind us and thought what I heard was complaining about the skin track.  Its either too steep or too many switchbacks.  Not sure about that with all the wind in my ear though. ;D&nb...
Way to get after it! I wish I had powder five minutes from my house.
on saturday we slaughtered cement basin, and near the summit of east peak we met a group of telemarkers...they did not follow us into cement basin, and other than the semi defined skin track we followed out and faint tracks from days before, there were no signs of anyone else back there that day.

come sunday, we debated going into bullion, but due to the extremely unstable snow, even the lower tree lines would be risky because of the faces up above that were very likely to slide...tha...

Neat -- so did you do a lot of your runs with the kites?  That looks cool.

Not quite. Just a short run with the "Speed wings." We needed a steeper slope and a better wind direction. Mostly just brought them for some testing.

I believe the reports are saying three guys on snowboards are missing. They intended to return Sunday evening and have not been heard from. One of the missing guys is the brother of my wifes co-worker. She does not know much else and there is not a lot more info online but I will update if i hear more.

On a different more solemn note, it's very unfortunate hearing about the tragedies in that area at the same time...

has anything been confirmed on the overdue folks?  Is there an area that is suspect?  Cement/Bullion/Silver?  We saw no folks saturday w/ o'night gear in Silver.
Two guys are missing up there right now....I take it wasn't you, Stugie and Snoslut...  Did you see a group intending to go snowcamping?
I think snoslut would agree that above being painful, it was ridiculously slow...lol!  On a different more solemn note, it's very unfortunate hearing about the tragedies in that area at the same time...
::)
Do you want to field that one Stefan?
(BTW: welcome to the board.)
That picture of you guys skinning looks painful.  I suppose that makes the turns all that much better.  Did you check out the Banff FF this year?  There was a great flick about a photographer who captures climbers in struggle.

On that, I should have been on top of finding riding partners earlier in the week, because I missed connecting with anyone on Saturday, after only a half dedicated attempt.  On Sunday, I was talked into the ski area by Kyle and Tara,&n...
I realized over the weekend that this peak will now be covered in moguls.  I suspect that they will always lurk under the powder until the snow melts. How sad.
Eric, thanks for writing the TR.  I hope I made the few alpine skiers who still use a BCA Trekker for skinning proud...lol!  Oh, and by the way, my name is STUGIE not John...lol!  You must have been up late writing the TR.  Hope you got some of the pics I sent you.  I'll have a vid soon.  I attached a few more pics from the 1st and 2nd for the hell of it...first one is you rippin' it up.  Second is of our ridiculous slog through the thickest "pow...

I didn't go back there. :(

I should have. I imagine it was good. My old man was back there.
We were back on the Hogsback on Saturday...gee, I thought it was pretty good?  Were you (Jason h.) back there that day?  If so, you're crew must have been the ones who started down the shoulder of the false summit just as we arrived (late, around 1 pm). Again, if so, thanks for the skin track all the way back up, and all the way in!  We thought conditions were good and stayed back there till dark.  We only saw what may have been your group, and a solo ski area refugee.
Neat -- so did you do a lot of your runs with the kites?  That looks cool.
Dang, i wish I joined. White wasn't so great, but I should have known that.

Thanks for the pics.
Wow!  That's the kind of snow we live for!  Days like that are what it's all about.  Nice pics!
eh?
So thats where the foot of new was.  Sounds interesting.
Good frickin gosh!

You definetely sold your soul for those turns, but I'd say it looks worth it.

WOW.

I now officially reject buying lift tickets and am joining the Church of the Ever Carving Slut. I'll tithe the cost of a lift ticket every Sunday.

You might enjoy some panoramics.  http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1563337#post1563337

The big peak behind the skis from the Brew Hut is Mt Garibaldi.

More information about the Brew Hut here -  http://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/index.php?title=Brew_Hut
Nice Lee.  Where's Brew and it's approach?  What's the big one behind skis in first pic?
That was us on the way down the Tilly Jane Trail, Slo-Steve.
We were discussing you at S's Birthday/TeleSki Movie Party for M last night. Took your advice and checked out Corn Dog on the 'other' BC site. More investigation to come.
I have pictures but not sure that I can put them in this post. What is your puppies name?
Anyway, I'll see if I can get the pix up.

Pray for Snow

That looks like some good stuff...
In the afternoon yesterday (12-2) Alpental road had been plowed but the parking lots remained untouched.  I saw two cars with skiers parking on the side of the road near the Armstrong Express lift so I figured I might as well too.  Alpental was ridiculously deep. Near the road, the powder was part way up my thighs with my skis on and I am 6ft tall.  It was easily 5ft deep or more in places up higher and rather unstable.  I heard the Alpy crew set off at least two charges for...
I definitely wouldn't go so far as to call it 'user group conflict', just that their throttles were a little more open before/when/after they passed us for comfort. As the SW side of Margaret's not yet filled in, we only interacted with them on the road up, not in the open areas. My limited experiences with snowmobilers at the Gold Creek access are invariably 90-95% positive.
