Shrimp pot was at 200'... it's a fishing kayak so it's super stable. You're right about it being tiring though!

As for the all in one day thing, it was actually two days, but could have been one if I went to Hurricane!

Actually, I got to do this tour on both May 31 and June 1 with two different parties.

Saturday it was warm and sunny and we were gobbing on the sun screen. I drank 3 liters of water.  And the beautiful Roosevelt Ridge and the Chair and Kaleetan Pks and the other far out places were fabulous.

Sunday we could barely see 100 feet at times. We used my GPS to pick the trail to the first saddle.  The run down to snow lake seemed to go on for ever too.

It was...
Smart to wait till the conditions are "right"!
What a great metaphor:

Ron J - the IFR backcountry skier!!!!

Here is another example of a headlamp return on an overcast night in a dark forest:

Cem,

Looks like a great trip. Do you plan to carry skis the whole way? If so what other ski lines do you plan to hit? Do you have any pictures of your (bike) touring rig with skis? I'd love to see it. if you have a link to a trip blog or website, please share. Safe travels!

For those interested in bicycle touring, I've been following Rick Gunn's three year, 25,000 mile round the world bike tour through 33 countries, which he just completed last...
Nice Schwacking!!! Looks like the skiing was fine, as well...
Rusty:
A great time was had by all, because we were SKIING!

Indeed, good to ski with you and Joe, as well as to meet Mike Olymm. Looking to a few more good mornings this summer and beyond.

The snow wasn't bad either, eh?!
JW-If you plan on repeating this trip again, let me know! I'd love to join.  :)
I had the same thoughts yesterday morning but didn't go.  The section of hiking on dirt to ski is not a skill I have developed.  ;)
Cem,  Wonderful adventure.  Jill and I skied and toured throughout the Sierra and in Argentina and Chile in 2005 and 2007.  I would suggest that you post this trip report and subsequent updates at Telemarktips: http://www.telemarktalk.com/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=1

There is a group of folks that live there and post regularly.  We have skied with Steven Hatcher and Andinista who are both in Santiago.  They and their families are just great.

Very cool,  the very essence of the Penisula there, skiing and shrimping in the same day. Bet they tasted good.
awesome man! coverage looks better than when I skiied it 3 years ago, that's a pretty nasty shwack out of Chaplin canyon too, I remmember trying to follow those same elk paths.  nice work
Did you set and pull your shrimp pot down 250' from your kayak ?

If so,  you have a strong back and stable kayak.   :D
Cem!!!

So that's where you are!!! was trying to call you for a ski last week!!great trip keep us posted on your adventures. Turner wants to know when he can join you 8)

Charles
Great Job!! How about picture of the bike ski setup? I am pretty sure I saw you heading up to Bachelor. Just got in from Argentina, is this your final destination?
Wow! What a great trip. I believe I met you at the Mt. Shasta Ranger Station. I spoke to you about the different routes on the mountain. What a great set-up you have. I was very impressed. Keep on peddling and skiing! 8)
Let me be the first to say, damn...nice work!!!

June 1st and you ski right back to the road?  I just looked and Alpy's telemetry has 70" at 3,100.  Is that true?  Shoot, you'll be skiing at Alpy until July.  What a year!

If you count the snow loaded with gravel on the surface down at the road... yes... you can ski all the way to the road.

Seriously, judging from the looks of the tree...
I think Ron must be a fully "Instrument Rated" backcountry skier, capable of navigating with ease in zero visibility "CAT III", IFR conditions.  Here's some further evidence:

Big Steve-

wondering what Kangaroo pass looked like and if it will be skiable for the next two weeks?

Is it a worthwhile area to consider skiing for the near future?

Chris

Lots of snow up there.  We figured that the Birthday Tour should go for the next couple weeks, maybe longer.  But this warm rain might accelerate th...

Hey iluka, nice meeting you guys up there.  Sure is a fun ski down the face of Red.  Nice n steep!  Too bad no view.  Here's a pic...

Nice meeting you and your friend as well, Merk. Certainly was a fun descent... made even more interesting in the pea-soup!

See you there this Sunday maybe... we're headed to ski that Needles chute.

Mac,  I've been whinning a bit lately and the upcoming forecast for rain/snow with a 4-5000' fl powder in June is a bit unusual.  ???

Fixed it. :).
after reading all the trip reports with socked in drizzle further west, I just had to gloat a little. ;)

I skinned up that route the day before, people driving by including the park rangers slowing down wondering, where the heck is he going? The second I put my skis down it started to rain, but kept going, booted the last steep portion right of Yakima peak. Skied the south face of Yakima and traversed back to the hairpin, skied through the woods and back to the car. Still a good ski (1400 vt) in the rain, at least there was no fog. A little rough in the woods to the car with firm 4" cupped sno...

Thanks for the report Chris. Not to worry, we sent the cyclists out on a SAR for you! What a great area and ingenious approach-thanks Ron! But I think his sidekick was Garfunkel, not Magellan.

changed it- would hate to misname his toy, as it is such an important piece of his arsenal.

good skiing with you all.

Ahhh !  Sunshine and Sierra corn.

Zap I can't believe you left to come home ;D
Robie sounds like a great trip. we went into Van Trump Park on Sunday and it did "rain"  :-[ all in all a challenging ski out the bottom section wet, steep, fury, Aviy debris. yum!

I'd recognize Murray in far foggier weather -- nice job y'all.  Glad you're getting out on some good trips.
We merely skinned the c. 80 vert feet up to the bump located directly N of CP Lake/W of the outlet, i.e., the low angle area c. 100-200 meters N of and above Chair Peak, and skied down the lower angle stuff from there.  That's the obvious bypass of the outlet.  The slopes we skied were fine, although littered with rocks and grit.  The snow between there and Roosevelt summit rock even dirtier.  Erosion happens.
We did the Chair Peak outlet as Jim mentioned - what did the slopes above on Mt Roosevelt look like? Is there continious line from near summit?

Tx, Russ
2 june: foggy, an inch or two of new over 6 inches of mush; when I got to Pan Pt everything was clear; when I got to McClure Rock, I could barely see my hand in front of my face; waited a while; it didn't change (probably did later in the day) so I skied down in the mush.

We saw three skiers descending the rib just to the north of the tarn as we were climbing to the 6700ft pass -- I heard some hooting and hollering -- so it sounded like you were enjoying the snow.

That was us, in all likelihood.  Hope we didn't make too much noise.

author=Dave_R link=topic=10211.msg41072#msg41072 date=1212344978]I'm not sure how much longer the gulley down from Chair Pk Lake will be a viable option as it seems to be going fast and there are some great gaping holes down to the creek below.  Were we to do it today, I'd probably look higher towards skiers left and the slopes of Roosevelt for a nicer work around the cliff band/gulley.

Good TR.  Fearing that the CP Lake outlet ski...
We skied from the hairpin to the knob (c. 7150') SW of Kangaroo Pass.  We may have seen you.  Our trip was a bailout after aborting our plans to do the Lyall Glacier (remnant) route from Rainy Pass.  The clouds were penetrating through to Roo Pass, but no rain.  Plenty of snow up there.
Hey - I think we ran into you on the ridge(?).  We skied from Silver Fir into the basin, lunched on the ridge, and then skied down the west side to Annette Lake, crossed the stream on a snow bridge just below the lake, and then on snow all the way to the John Wayne Trail.  That west valley was ripped by a number of big avies the past week or so - so tree-snappers.

We then hiked from the JWT back to our second car.  A good ski and really only got spit on a little...
Nice pow turns on the dome!!!!!!
Well, the full time ski-mountaineer errant has time to go back & hit it from PS.  ;D
wait wait wait-

I wasn't going to give you any flak about the up-and-over bit, but now I realize that you skied from Columbia Crest to the saddle and didn't hit Point Success.  The Point Success direct is the cherry on the sundae!  Those are some of the best turns, with a steep continuous fall line, directly from the proper high point for the line.

Guess you'll just have to do it again and get it right.

;)

We had nasty pollen last year coming off Coleman Glacier on Baker about this time of year.  I'd make sure you wipe all the Iodine off the bottom of your skis...it's REALLY bad for the environment.
Robie, nice to meet you and your crew up there.  The upper portion of the Sunbeam drainage sure looked inviting, I bet that was fun!  Love the pictures of cycling in ski boots.
We stopped to take some pictures of your group descending Foss, too bad the clouds didn't cooperate!
Cheers,
Nate
