It certainly was a spectacular day out there.  Three long-time TAYers brought a newbie to the backcountry that day for hopefully his first month in a long streak-what a perfect time! Enjoyed meeting you again Telemon and others. Glad you had such a nice day! The snow treated us all very well....

Here's an interesting report of another crevasse fall from the Rainier Climbing Conditions blog:
great trip and photos. looks like the place to be right now.
Good job keeping it going Don!
More great photos, thanks for sharing!  Although I have not "freed my mind", I love seeing good teleskiers rip and seeing photos of good tele turns.  Awesome!

Nicely framed photo. Nice turns

Ditto.
Thanks, Chris. Good to see you and your crew in the parking lot!
Yes!!  I love bivying and waking up to clear blue sky and warm sun!  Skiing pow is great, and probably one of life's greatest gifts, but earning summer turns can really have it's perks!  I love that first pic...really made me smile at the wonderful trips with their little perks that can really only be had in summer!
Nicely framed photo. Nice turns
One of several Paradise patches just minutes from the Muir Snowfield, yesterday . . .

Smooth like buttah once it softened up (around 2:00 PM) and all the tracks are ours.

FYI
I was in the vicinity of the Paradise Glacier yesterday and watched two skiers make nice truns down the PG but then get stopped by bare ice about 300 ft from the base. Last week there was a small strip of snow left that avoided the ice but now it's melted out.

I watched them climb back up the Glacier rather than try and circumnavigate the ice ( my ssumption as that could have been their plan all along). The only way to get all the way down from what I could see would be...
Yes to all that, Greg.
What I could see of Paradise Gl from Anvil Rock looked smoother, whiter, prettier. Of course, "the snow is always whiter on the other side." I didn't come up that way, so didn't go down it, not knowing about how intact it might be. It was great to be out.
Looks like you got your stone-grind taken care of for the season, though. Also, looks as though Paradise Glacier patches or Coleman Pinnacle area patches will retain snow that has marginally better quality to Muir, at least until the new flakes flutter down to earth.

Great ski day yesterday!
You were among a half dozen TAYers that I meet this weekend. Yes, my son, a friend and I just got back a few hours ago from two full days of vistas, turns, goats, turns, camping under the stars, turns and some more turns on Ptarmigan Ridge.Definitely my best September since I joined the club.TRs will have to wait until tomorrow.
Of course, avalanches can occur any time of year, but I have to say I'm a lot more worried about them right after a big storm than in the middle of September.  If nothing else, September skiing frequently means evaluating one single slope as safe or unsafe, whereas in February you frequently have to evaluate not only the snow you ski on, but the areas you traverse to get there and back.  Also, the current conditions don't make you wonder about deeply buried weak layers that could cause...
Just remember, as some on this website can attest to, avalanches can hit you just as hard in September!
Fun and painless September turns 8).....really painless after a few Mountain Margs. 8) I'm sorry to have missed Billy....here's a shot of the whole crew

The Goat was beautiful and Ron's correct as I was last one down and  watched the Goat move into a positon where he could watch each skier and you could tell by his head movements that he follwed each skier. Way cool! Thanks for the pics Mad-Dog and RonJ. Margareitas weren't half bad either.
In the first photo, is that the Sister's range in the background?
Looking great everyone!  Sorry I missed out, hope to see you in October...
"significantly more hiking"?  Ye of little faith (alright, you're often right) - significantly more hiking unless it involves no hiking at all - in the fresh pow of the new season!  Who's with me?!!!
And Billy did certainly seem to enjoy the festivities...

While he didn't seem to have any interest in joining us in our passion for the infamous mountain margaritas, he certainly showed an interest in our means of downhill conveyance.
Here's a sequence showing Billy's careful observation of a skier's descent, which was repeated for each of four skiers:
Nice job Dave, way to get those September turns, gritting it out on the fierce Palmer Couloir.
Well written for a lurker. Your retirement is kicking in, naps after skinning that huge vertical on the Palmer. Good riddance work!
Nice job, Chris, and a good push.

    - that was a trippy, liittle trip report; it's always a good idea to know how much softening has occured - especially in those couloirs, Cheers !
I too love WA.

Thanks for the tip fellas.
Oh yes last year on Sept 30th was by far the best Sept ski turns I have ever had. Glad you were able to ride the Flett and make it out before dark.
Its a rather sketchy hike in the dark.

Yes, I remember pretty clearly!! On September 30th last year I found myself up on the lower Muir Snow field in a blizzard.  ...Well maybe not a true blizzard, but winds speeds were at least 30mph and there was snow blowing everywhere.  Coming from the sky and from the ground.  All the other skiers and boarders were on there way down, and here I was making my way up.  I laid my poles down on the snow to adjust my boots, and around 30 seconds later they were almost buried. ...
Cool mose, glad to hear you took advantage of this beautiful area...if you hit it again towards the end of Sept., you might encounter fresh POW.  We got about 2' of it last year at the end of September - good stuff!  Great tr - I love the sunset pic especially!  I think you're right on...I believe it's about 7 miles up to the top of the snowfield on the E side of Observation, W side of Echo rock...14 or so miles RT.
Saw you guys on the hike up the day before.  My wife and I camped at High camp the evening you arrived, and the next morning went up to the Park Butte lookout early on our way to the car.  Sure enough, saw you with a high-power monocular in the lookout tower as you were getting over the crest!
Indeed, the 7th.
What I am calling the North Cirque was the terrain from the farthest end of Table Mountain (west) and to the right (north) toward the saddle and plateau to the North. The blue on the topo map pretty much correlates to this persistent snow field.  It is the snow that is visible approaching Artists Point on one of the hairpin turns. Ptarmigan ridge looked pretty bare until the Coleman Pinnacle and around there it looked to be similar 600-800 foot vertical patches. Any new sno...
I love Washington. Some photos........

...
I did Heliotrope the weekend before this one.  I was planning to go back this weekend, but the forecast held me back.  I may go this coming Saturday; if you're interested, perhaps we can go together.

The east side is pretty bad in my experience.  Pockets of good, but nothing like Heliotrope.  I've heard OK things about heading up higher than Heliotrope, but Skykilo's report is the most glowing I've seen by far.  I haven't ventured up p...
Can I get in on the Baker action?
thanks for the beta, sounds worth the travel from down south
A friend and I climbed/skied the Coleman Deming yesterday...saw two skiers coming down the Deming as we were going up, maybe that was you?  Anyway, I agree...by far the route is in the best shape I've seen it in for September.  Other than walking down the pumice ridge for a couple of hundred feet, we were able to ski off the summit and all the way down to the hogsback camps at 6000' without taking off the skis...
Cool I may be going up there soon.
I'll pass on some beta, trumpetsailor without bothering to post on a separate subject - sorry. We too thought the upper Muir looked a little gnarly although not as bad as a typical September. We skied the Paradise and found it to be quite good - smooth and buttery corn in spots. Crevasses are out but can cross and /or end run all - stay skiers left at the snout.

Found about 600 vertical feet of descent from the top of Table Mountain in the north cirque.

Can you give some more detail on what/where "the north cirque" is?  And did you see any snow farther out on Ptarmigan Ridge?  tx
Uh, I'm pretty bad with dates, but I think today is the 7th.

I can't swear what it'll look like next month, but I'm betting October will require more hiking.  Not too much, though.  Good luck completing the summer!

Did you see any new snow?  I haven't been up to Artist Point in a few weeks, but we got snowed on last weekend on the other side of the mountain.

What the heck??? Telemark Tips putting a non-tele turn skier on the cover???

That's the best tip that one can give to telemarkers; fix your heels.  ;D
Way to get the turns and 'freshies' no less!!!!!!!  Now you've got me thinking about handing out (begrudgingly...) $$$$$$$$$ (to THE EVIL EMPIRE...POWDER CORP)  for my early season "discount"  season  pass for of course, Mt. B.  Nice that you have big 'R' in your backyard...ski pow just about any time of year...it looks like.

I never thought I would live to see the day!
Unless of course, on tele gear, not making tele turns.
But that is a whole different beast to possibly be discussed in Can...

How much fresh came before you started grooving, Snow Bell?

Let's get one thing strait  -  I never stop grooving.  (I pause my groove for sleep and Dr. Phil, but that's it)

Welcome to the community Jay G.
I am sorry that my pal and I didn't come over and say good morning the other day but we were not sure that our condition (laziness...

Hi everyone, I'm totally new to TAY.  I was skiing with Silas on Monday and I think his report sums up our experience perfectly.  As for the Reverends, this was a great first ride.  Obviously my setup is heavy, but I'd definitely do it again for Sept 1 skiing!  We did stay above the clouds for a bit at the top, as mentioned (see photo).

Nice picture.
