Ah September - the cruellest month!

That is usually the case, although October/06 was crueler than September/06. This September, at Ptarmigan Ridge, was actually my least cruel September. Hopefully, October will bring us a substantial amount of new snow..cetainly not going to happen in the next couple days, though.
Andy,
Way to keep at it! next, the iffiest month?
Don
mmmmmhhh. Looks like Tahoma playing peekaboo in the clouds.
Kam - skiing in Sept!!  It must be paradise living in Reno!
Kam with all your super dooper magic photo skills couldn't you at least make the snow fill up all the screen? Of course you get points for being there in that "stash." or should we stay stashettes or stashini?    modified
On one hand I don't like the idea of trip reports without locations -- that's bragging, as opposed to helping, inspiring, educating, and advising those planning trips.  On the other hand, I don't condone the revealing of other folks' secret stashes.

On the third hand, because I find conventional human genetics to be slightly boring, I'd like to point out that if that's your secret stash, I'm willing to share some of mine with you so you can at l...

My sprained ankle feels better after reading your fine TR at telemarktalk.com.  Thanks for that.

I spent 30 years employed as an Industrial First Aid Attendant. I believe that would be the first time that I fixed an injury with a TR. :) ::)
Wow, you put a lot of time into your TR's on your page and it shows.  I really like the "dream camp" picture.  Your B&W's have excellent contrast, I really am a fan.  Thanks for the great read(s).  You guys always nail impressive trips!
Thanks for the report. I considered doing the same yesterday. Makes not feel so bad that I ditched my plans and went to work instead.

Congrats on getting the hardest month done.
And welcome to TAY for your first TR.  ;D
Jonathan - click on the thumbnail for the biggy, - webshots should allow u to zoom it further without signing up as a member. (let me know if they don't let u zoom in)

Thank you for sharing. This makes me feel better about going to the "Last Resort" the week before, when at least the sun was shining  ;)
Congrats for completing your September turns!
author=danhelmstadter link=topic=10914.msg44733#msg44733 date=1221950327]The bergshrund bridge posed no problem - it's still large and well intact.

Do you have any pictures of this?  I'd be curious to see what it looks like at this time of year.
On a patch that size, you can sidestep up it without skins to save transition time....   ;)
Telemack; I don't remmember there being a tricky/sketchy bridge at 6K or anywhere on the route, all the bridges were phatty. It looked like the standard/heavily tracked route now traverses over from the Squak at about 8k as I could easily tell from the bootpack. The bergshrund bridge posed no problem - it's still large and well intact.

Cheers
I am finally done with my complete TR with pics on my site for those that are interested....

Ptarmigan Traverse

Thanks so much for leading me back into the craziness of resuming the TAY streak, Chris!  :D
Just curious:  in mid-summer there was a large crevasse with a diagonal bridge at about 6000'; did you encounter that?  And what was the schrund at the base of the Roman Wall like?

Cheers
Nice pics, way to bag the Sept. turns!
I notice in the first photo a fairly large snow patch on the mountain behind Silver Peak.  Have you tried that one?

No, seriously, great effort and great demonstration that the joy is in the adventure, not just the skiing. :)
Scary.. he is lucky.. we met an older fellow on his way up when we were coming down but the times dont match up.. we saw two other guys skiing from just shy of the summit it looked like.. tons of climbers of course..

    - by the likes of your reports Dan, I would think that your descents are well calculated.  Thanks for the inspiring report ...        Rob
I think I saw your tracks up there, they were looking good.

Sounds like this guy was really lucky other people came along and found him, he could have very easily died. Did you see anyone else while you were up there?
"barack skiing with us" what a dream! :) :) :D ;D
i love it!
Hey Brad!  Thanks for the great trip.  Some highlights:
*Sleeping in the sun on the warm rocks,
*cruising down warm corn,
*a belly flop as I tried to slide over that little crevasse,
*my 2 year anniversary,
*a cold porter at the refurbished lodge
- The only way life could be better is if Barack was skiing with us. ;)

Pretty.....nice pics Dan!  Top o' Roman Wall looks like ass all the way across from Coleman Gl. to Easton/Squak side.  Funny, Lani & I were just talking about that last night.  Only skier up there 'eh?  Don't you know that's dangerous?  At least you didn't get reprimanded like some we know  ::)

Nice choice Brad, unemployment is where it's at!  Maybe we can schedule to meet up on powder days this season.  I am also glad to hear of Don shirking working to ski.  It wont be long until its time to load up the mans van for a powder pilgrimage.  ;D

Great trip report, Bob!  Really a feast for the eyes.  I'm glad you posted the extended report on t-tips.  Did the Coleman Pinnacle snowfield have more snow this year than last year?

I'll keep trying to connect with you.  Hopefully this winter...which may come any day now. ;D

Thanks, Chris. Good to see you and your crew in the parking lot!

Good to meet you guys, and it was cool to know there were lots of fellows gettin' after it in September.
Thanks for showing up, T-Bob, and I did get my first September turns in at Rainier the next day.
This trip report  http://telemarktalk.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=47968  allows for a better representation of second day on Ptarmigan Ridge.

Bob
Three photos really couldn't give an adequate representation for the day, especially with 3 cameras in action; so check out this trip report  http://telemarktalk.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=47968  It was still hard to narrow the selection for this extended photo log.

Bob
It certainly was a spectacular day out there.  Three long-time TAYers brought a newbie to the backcountry that day for hopefully his first month in a long streak-what a perfect time! Enjoyed meeting you again Telemon and others. Glad you had such a nice day! The snow treated us all very well....

Here's an interesting report of another crevasse fall from the Rainier Climbing Conditions blog:
great trip and photos. looks like the place to be right now.
Good job keeping it going Don!
More great photos, thanks for sharing!  Although I have not "freed my mind", I love seeing good teleskiers rip and seeing photos of good tele turns.  Awesome!

Nicely framed photo. Nice turns

Ditto.
Thanks, Chris. Good to see you and your crew in the parking lot!
Yes!!  I love bivying and waking up to clear blue sky and warm sun!  Skiing pow is great, and probably one of life's greatest gifts, but earning summer turns can really have it's perks!  I love that first pic...really made me smile at the wonderful trips with their little perks that can really only be had in summer!
Nicely framed photo. Nice turns
One of several Paradise patches just minutes from the Muir Snowfield, yesterday . . .

Smooth like buttah once it softened up (around 2:00 PM) and all the tracks are ours.

FYI
I was in the vicinity of the Paradise Glacier yesterday and watched two skiers make nice truns down the PG but then get stopped by bare ice about 300 ft from the base. Last week there was a small strip of snow left that avoided the ice but now it's melted out.

I watched them climb back up the Glacier rather than try and circumnavigate the ice ( my ssumption as that could have been their plan all along). The only way to get all the way down from what I could see would be...
Yes to all that, Greg.
What I could see of Paradise Gl from Anvil Rock looked smoother, whiter, prettier. Of course, "the snow is always whiter on the other side." I didn't come up that way, so didn't go down it, not knowing about how intact it might be. It was great to be out.
Looks like you got your stone-grind taken care of for the season, though. Also, looks as though Paradise Glacier patches or Coleman Pinnacle area patches will retain snow that has marginally better quality to Muir, at least until the new flakes flutter down to earth.

Great ski day yesterday!
