It sure was crowded up there on Sunday but I guess the options are limited if you want quick easy skiing.
Here's a photo of a couple of TAY'ers that I snapped on the ascent.

If you're interested, there are a few more photos here: http://blog.danielbuker.com

Aside from the beautiful weather that we shared, you guys sure didn't have the wonderful snow that we experienced on Heliotrope Ridge only a few days before (Oct.22). :(

Had the same experience at Heliotrope the day before (was up there on Saturday with Skip & Drew). We brought crampons hoping we wouldn't have to use them, but alas we donned the pons for the icy ascent to the top of Heliotrope Ridge (rains/mist/refreezing Friday night seem to have adequately destroyed last Wednesda...
Way to get out there and resist the urge to watch football instead! Despite the snow conditions, it looked like you all had a nice day out. Such a beautiful area to ski/ live in! Let it snow!

Nice to see you met my old man 'Mr Hummel' :). I also found some nice corn, but further north on baker's e side. Given this report, perhaps I should've shot closer to home. Sounds like I would've fared just as well or better?
one of the nicest days Brenda and I have ever spent on the Muir Snowfield. Weather and snow quality were perfect from top to bottom. Weird how the nasty wind at the parking lot died off at the top of Pan Pt.

Nice work with the TR's. My photo's suck. Even though they're in focus, they are boring. I think there's an art to the photo thing!
We should get together. I can never keep mine in focus.
Seriously, I've never seen a good collection of ski photography tips. Anyone interested in creating a new thread and compiling tips? I know I...

See ya on the mountain.
Thanks for the post....we'll see if we have the same luck tomorrow!
you beat me to it... was with Hummel and Scott & Steve & Troy -Angie and Steve -Barb-- also Mark & T on the way down..
as you say the entire snow field softened up nicely from Muir to Pebble creek.. wild winds from the start calmed to allow short sleeves most of the way up. Muir was mellow, populated mostly with skiers today.
turns were sweet and soft from the get go. enough remaining new snow to cover the dirt.
further down autum colors ruled...

Cool picture. Saturday was good as well, with almost no one there, but I did manage to snap this French tourist in action . . .

Nicks Sticks: nice photos -- the colors look great!
It was corn on Saturday, and it was good. With a freeze overnight, tomorrow should be the same.

And whatever you do,remember to make fun of pinheads whenever possible.
Uh-oh, here we go again. The pin heads outnumbered the flat feet 4-3, and I'm pretty sure we out climbed them, too. Actually, I will bow humbly to Doug's skill on skis (AT). He looked sweeet, did some pretty full circles and some backward skiing...

Telemon -- Last time I crossed the border (on land), I had five pairs on skis in my Prius. When I said I was going skiing, the border guard asked me if I was planning to rent skis. I came very close to saying, "Yes, I'm hoping to sell these and use the money to rent some skis."
With 5 pairs of skis on your car, maybe he was wondering if y...

Awesome dudes, thanks for the info! I'll try and remember to charge my camera to bring back some stoke. Cool community here, I was half expecting to get ignored or spammed for asking for beta in my first post.
Nah, this is a great community. Just post the conditions when you return to repay the favor. And whatever you do,

Hi Bob
Love the pride cap by the way. This coming from a guy who skied in longjohns (cotton) and a trucker cap. We're a match made in heaven.

Nice October turns!
I'm thinking about heading up there on Sunday. I am pretty confident about my winter backcountry skills and routefinding skills, but don't have much glacier experience. I'm also not familiar with Baker much past the rope at the ski area. Can anyone offer some beta on the route up Heliotrope, ie is it glaciated, crevasses, crampons and rope re...
Hey Chris, nice pix in the gallery, sounds like a fun day, wish I had been not killed at work and thus able to go. Imperfect snow on the mountain sure beats any day at work.

Great day with all you folks. Thanks so much. Sorry I had to leave early.
The worst part of that day was that it had to end! Thoughts of it will ease me to sleep for a couple of weeks, at least!
Curious about which way you came back down the ice patch. Did you hook up with the bootprints where we were slipping?
Hey buddy thanks for sharing your...
Hi Bob
Wow, hey is it today already? Would have replied earlier but I just woke up. I was so baked at the end of the day. Thanks so much for showing us around. I counted 8 hrs and 5 minutes of climbing for 3 minutes of turns but... that was a terrific day - I am still thinking about it. Love the pride cap by the way. This coming from a guy who skied in longjohns (cotton) and a trucker cap. We're a match made in heaven.

Pebble Creek is just above Panorama Point. I think the sign said 2.2 miles. So it was probably about 2.5 miles to where the snow was continuous. At the very bottom of the snowfield there are a few steep mini-headwall-looking snowbanks (if anyone else knows what I am talking about and can offer a better description please feel free to elaborate). I put my skins on at the top of the second one. There might have been continuous snow farther down but I couldn't see anything beyond the trai...
Looks like my LDL will be a solo trip tomorrow, as well (my partner bailed). I haven't skied the Muir snowfield in years. How far is it from the lot to Pebble Creek? I'd like to wear my tele boots instead of packing them. Is it less than 2 miles before I'll be able to start skinning? Thanks for the cool TR and any advice/beta you can provide.

I saw your tracks. Nice line. The snow in your shots looks much fresher than when I was up there yesterday. It is starting to feel like winter again.

No good photos! So you didn't get one of me ...
Please, Bob - send one of George or Zack to Telemark tips so we can stop looking at that lame guy with the oversized goggles. They deserve it more than him! :D
Well, here were a few that I'll put out there. The camera was being tempermental, so most of my shots were out of focus or not properly exposed.

We definitely had a nicer day on Wednesday. We didn't see your tracks above camping area or on the area that we skied. The wind may have wiped the snow clean. Our group crossed the 1,000' snowfield a couple hundred feet above its terminus and then followed the wind scoured ridgeline on the west side to the second highest point. After dropping into the smooth, clean slate of a snowfield, I remembered to send a message on my SPOT tracking device. The arrow points to the location th...
Welcome to the web world of getting turns on the snow all year, Andy and Mike. Don't hesitate to throw an invitation on TAY for partners when you get tired of each others company or just want to share the snow with other fanatics. As you read above, my group wouldn't have happened without this site.Good times and good friends!
Ran into guys on the ridge, surprised to see the whole slope already schralped, we got stumped on the crevasse section on the Coleman glacier,
I also took a header on the hike out, traverse below the glacier.Great weather for October.
Nice work boys!I ran into you the other day with my brother Andy!We realized we should have caried a lader to forge across the crevasse at the crux of the coleman route,it was nice having the opton of doing laps on Helitrope!
Take care!

I wish I could have made it up there on Wednesday with you guys!! I am really looking forward to meeting some TAY people. I agree with your assessment of the ice, and each of us in our Tuesday group each fell a couple times. It seems like you guys had the bluebird all day yesterday, where as on Tuesday the sun left us towards the end.
Regular skis this trip. If nothing else it felt good to be skinning for the first time in a couple months. Plus, if I was going to (re)discover that I don't know how to figl worth a damn, I didn't want to discover that at the top of a 2.5K vert run that took several hours to climb, on a good snow day ;D

I must agree with Rusty Knees that the the initial assesment - 3"to 6" of new snow over bullet hard ice - seemed rather dismal, but perseverance and determination proved that goods were to be had. Great group, great skiing and great pizza (pinapple, salmon and garlic)!!!

Beautiful evening light. Not sure I've ever done a Muir trip where I deliberately stayed so late, but the snow and the temps were both so nice that there was no hurry in leaving.
Same as my experience Sunday - mighty fine!
Hi Wolf - Great pictures - was the kite surfer using a snowboard? You duplicated our trip from September almost exactly... except we didn't have to wade through snow on the trail. What a great day to be out, huh? Regular skis or firnspiegls? ;D
Nice TR, especially liked the photo of the chutist.
I hope any lurking Meadow Rovers appreciate your slushy trail fortitude! NPS managers take note: continuous rock lining on trail margins often keeps snow & meltwater/refrozen ice on the trail. This design flaw contributes to the meadow damage when less intrepid visitors avoid these sections.

I've still got wounds healing from that ditch into the ditch. Worth it, though.
The soonest I'll be able to get out will be Sunday. Do you think any of that beautiful snow will still be around then, or should I wait another week in hopes of more addicitive white powder?
