Great photos all, looks like everyone had a great time, even "Dolly" ;). I missed being there, but had a great time celebrating my mom's birthday. Glad you enjoyed the cookies Joe, looked like a nice picnic afterwards.

Super, thanks for the beta.
Any hunch/guess/speculation on what conditions will be like by August 21?
We had been planning on just heading to up to around 7800' as per this earlier TR:

Several years ago, an old can of bear spray leaked in my outdoor gear storage closet. I still get nasal congestion and itchy eyes now after digging through my stuff.

ha ha ha, excuse me for laughing, I'm glad the bear spray injuries were not more serious, definitely no laughing matter when it is happening.
6 or 7 years ago, I set out to scale Mt. Moran, about a mile from the trail head, some guys came running down in a panic, stammering breathless warnings of a mean bear chasing after them. I was prepared with my can of bear spray (...
Nice pics!!!!!!!! Think I see my tracks (don't see any spelling errors...).
Dan - thanks for the kudos and tip about the gear. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's experienced this! :D i'm working on airing it still...
Sounds like you guys had a great time!! Thanks for the great report. I agree with Rusty Knees, missing July is not the end of the world. But please, I'm dying to see some photos!! Then click on the "Tb" button next to where it says "add image ta...
Nice report, Brad! Great climbing and skiing with you. I'm glad your eyes are on the mend. Thanks for doing all the driving. Your tele-technique is smooth, fast and inspiring, almost as inspiring as watching you select and open micro-brews with your bare hands. Thanks for being my younger and wiser mentor in so many ways. ;D

Rusty Knees and I have been trying to link up for turns for quite awhile. If it hadn't been for my son's (and his new bride's) open house on the weekend, I may have very well been with you guys in the fresh snow.
Nice Brad.
Like I told Don the other day; way to be in the right place at the right time.
Sorry to hear about the eyes. I mostly ski with mine closed for that very reason. Although next time my wife catches my crying while watching Oprah, I'll claim snow blindness.

Wow- I have been drooling over these pics for awhile now... just noticed on the third pic on the first thread, that on the second ridge there seemed to be several slabs that released and propogated quite a ways down slope. That entire ridge looks like it slid- wow!
Glad someone is/ was out there getting some powder, the entire TAY community is jealous.
I would also like to second Stugie's comment- I am also eagerly awaiting the return of winter, despite the amazing we...

It's really to bad that we didn't have Monday's or even today's sunny weather when we were up there. The snow would have been so much better for turns!!
Like it was the previous week http://www.turns-all-year.com/skiing_snowboarding/trip_reports/index.php?topic=10763.0

Yes, she is pretty amazing!! She mentioned that she heard or saw some skiers while I was in the creek drainage. I was hoping to run into you later, but obviously that didn't happen. I believe I ended up skinning through your tracks at one point in time as well. I saw fresh dog paw prints right next to fresh ski tracks. I know what you mean -- I can't stop drooling either, so I figured I'd share some images so we can all drool together as one. Below are two photos: the top one I took from Cerro Catedral, looking southwest toward Cerro Tronador. The second one was taken while sitting on a rock at the edge of Lago Puelo, a lake south of th...
Kam - I post processed the picture using the "spherize" option in CS2. However, after looking at the picture, I was wondering what it would take to set up the picture in that way. a Lensbaby?
Acarey - Yeah, I gassed myself. I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy. That god forsaken stuff is horrible. The training you refer to sounds like pure torture to me. I'm actually considering just not carrying it - especially after all the m...

We recently came upon a hiker with a broken leg in GNP. However, the incredible vistas and powder depicted below take the cake. I am sitting at my computer drooling...actually waiting for summer to end! Wow!
Howdy Mosetick, Thanks for the report. We were on the other side of the mountain. Good job you have a videographer at all, who's willing to accompany you on a foggy day into the mountains. ::) Not all of us are so lucky. Nice videos and pictures. Even foggy, the flowers are spectacular!
I agree that there's probably some pretty good snow out there for quite a while. See you up there!

Scott,
On Sunday, 8/10, the conditions from Van Trump Monument up the "Edge" just east of the rockband separating Paradise Glacier from Muir snowfield up to approximately 8400' had small suncups with just a little butter on top for generally excellent skiing conditions with a few caveats:
Optimal climbing route from Van Trump Monument to just below McClure has several rockband crossings with challenging route finding under low visibility conditions.

cool, you gassed yourself! Reminds me of back in the 'Nam era when in basic training they had us practice donning gas masks, walking thru a gas filled room, etc. The last part of the exercise was to walk into the gas filled room, take off the gas mask, and stay there long enough that you would have to talk at least 2 deep breaths (not to mention saturation of your eyes, hair, skin, clothing, etc.). The gas was so thick you couldn't see across the room; I vaguely remem...
Cool. In that first photo did you use a Lensbaby, or was it post-processed?

skied the lower 550' of a melted out gully below Table a couple times on bumpy D cups.
...D cups? I would have said double D, at least... ;)
Yep, I love that photo of the lake. I'm glad you liked Stugie...
Did not get higher. We spent too much time getting to lower Paradise wondering why we were crossing more creeks, finding ourselves at the Williwaka first, and there was no way to see the upper glacier. It's just a guess, but I would guess it is not much different most of the way up to Anvil Rock but could be some cracks. Probably best (and nicer) to approach from the Paradise, not the Muir Snowfield, to see what you are getting into.
That first shot is awesome, with the reflection and all.
Don,
Did you get higher up on the Paradise? I'm curious if the conditions are good from Anvil Rock down - thanks for the beta!

What a day. It's not often you spend an August afternoon sitting in front of a fire. Met a TAY lurker (hi) and sat around telling war stories. Eventually gave up and went skiing despite the rain, leaving Silas behind (he was afraid he might get wet). We returned, telling stories of marginal snow quality and numerous rocks, just five minutes from the car. This inspired him to jump up and ski the chute twice.

Wow, way to nail an awesome trip and those photos are incredible! I really like the one with 'Jesse and Blue Lake'. Absolutely inspiring and aweing!
I agree with Hedgie---shouldn't you be wearing gloves when skiing in a talus field?!?! ::)
Dedication. That's all that can be said
hi chiconstics, i did not notice the painting. Roberto was the caretaker of the hut this time. unfortunately we did not get a chance to talk to him much because he was helping with the rescue of Sapo. when you were there do you remember the cat? Torta, perhaps? maybe he controls the mouse population?

author=Zap link=topic=10750.msg44009#msg44009 date=1218157769]. Fortunately we didn´t encounter any slides on our trip. Avy control work seems nill at Catedral for the most part, and not so organized (we skied with our beacons/shovel/probe in-bounds following the big powder dump this week). We weren´t on...
I read about the recent avalanche at Catedral. Hopefully, you were unaffected and will have an enjoyable return to the North.
Really nice read and great photos...thanks for sharing.
Congrads on a amazing trip and photos you are truely a pionier in Ski Mountaineering in the PNW. I was in a lightining storm up on Rainier that week and the Power was amazing.
author=lordhedgie link=topic=10773.msg44023#msg44023 date=1218230999] Did you try heading up further, or has it melted out?
We didn't get a chance to take a look. John was moving upslope under the influence of a brew named after a local mountain and I had to pick the kids up from daycare so we had to resign ourselves to the little slice of heaven lower down.
Those pictures demonstrate the sort of irresponsible skiing that gives the sport a bad reputation. No avy beacons, no shovels, no probes... The risks you're taking are insane!
;D
I was up that way a week ago; it looked like Upper I was much better connected. Did you try heading up further, or has it melted out?

I know this is a lame question for my first post... but was the ridge snow free?
In other words, would the ridge go in boots?

Great trip Jason, I'm glad it went so well.
And thanks Lowell for your links- really interesting stuff
It would've been rad to have you along Ryan. We'll get back there next year :) or you'll have to take me into glacier peak now that you know the area so well. :D
