Skiing to the car in October...priceless.
We skied almost to the car 10 days ago - then we both rocked our skis when we ran out of snow and had to ditch into the ditch!

Love the picture. ... How does this form? I was going to share this with my class.
Hoarfrost forms when air of just the right dampness comes in contact with a surface that's below freezing. Once a crystal starts to form it can keep growing as long as conditions stay at the delicate balance point where the water vapor directly crystallizes into ice without becoming...
Yeah, those crystals were almost big enough to ski. Very cool formations, especially 10mm away from them! God I love macro photography!

Yes I do! Do you want to meet the lesbian, or the other who is married and has three kids! Neither skis. Strange but true.
Brilliant reply. I was fond of Cookie Monster's wry and ironic retorts and Snow Bell's always good for a laugh but this is a classic. You funny. ;D

This is my wife, and I have to say I am damn proud of her. What she didn't say about this trip was that I suggested we hike out by the Chain lakes trail. Not being the map carrying kind (who needs em, right?) I didn't realize that this meant a significant amount climbing to get back to the car. It seems that route drops a lot, but then climbs back up to almost the high point again...

Great pictures, we should have gone to Muir. Looks like there was some freshy fresh. OK, much more than there was at Ptarmigan Ridge-where there was none.

Snowtroll and I headed up Saturday morning to get our October turns in. Burst through the clouds just below Paradise to catch a few glimpses of the mountain and were on th trail by 9:30. The cloud level continued to rise with us finally clearing at about 7200'. We made a short detour to visit a friend before heading up the snowfield. Snow was firm but there looked to be hope as the su...
Are you talking about avalanches in the existing snowpack or in snow that might fall in the near future? There will certainly be some avalanching if there is a sufficient quantity of new snow. If just a bit of snow falls, then maybe it's important to figure out if, recently, crust or other unfriendly elements formed at or near the snow surface. ( Future instabilities often form in exposed snow. ) You can't easily produce a forecast of the type you request without very specific informat...

Good job Atbetty! When you have lemons (October ice) you make lemonade (Icetober turns). Way to keep it going. Good on you photographer hubby, too.
Thanks for the good snow rpt. I'll let ya know if we get some before you guys do (Sierra - Tahoe) area.
Thanks for the TR. Sounds like wednesday might be a good day to head out.
Also does anyone know about the avalanche potential on the paradise to muir route i.e. leaving aside obvious areas around panorama point and the glacier facing slopes? Looking at the number of people on that trail I was wondering if theres ever been any incidents.

Have no fear Telemack, shortly after that picture was taken , he had his shirt off aswell and the two of them where posing like an Abercrombie & Fitch ad campaign for the Paradise tourists!

Beautiful day up there. Forgot the camera and the watch. Snow was indeed hard, but stretches of softer snow could be found here and there. Even the scratchy stuff was smooth and mostly uniform. An excellent cap to an excellent week.
For those heading up that way (though it's probably precipitating already), continuous skiing was thin but possible from Muir to Pebble Creek. I didn't see any hint of the cracks in the snowfield in my trip to Anvil Rock, but I bet any bridges ar...

Way to get out there even in the bad weather. Sometimes those are the most memorable trips. Congrats on getting 12 months!
Wow, I'm glad I went for a hike this weekend instead. Still, glad you enjoyed your turns, hopefully without any core shots. Here's to next weekend being a little whiter below, bluer above, and softer all around.
Hi Jerm-
Ya it took us a good while to get back to our tent. We got there around 7pm. It took a little longer than we planned. Made it to the car just after 9pm. That snow bridge was pretty crazy. I took some nice photos of you guys at the top of the snow bridge as well. (see flickr link below) I was wishing that I had my split-board for the lower section. That looked really fun.
Cheers- Nice debut on YouTube!

Nice work Snowslut. Inspired choice for an early season tour. :)
Nice shot, Alpenho!! Now I'm finally starting to wake up from the summer hibernation.
I'm up in the air too. Right now it looks like a good dumping on Thursday -- I probably can't scam Friday off, so Saturday I might be looking for a partner. If that snow turns to rain, well, I've got a lot of stuff to do around the house...
...and quite the difference another day makes. Heck, we had ice on the road and all over the sidewalk/trail Friday morn. ...and that killer breeze...

I decided on delaying my October turns until we hopefully have a little more snow coverage. However, I had a pretty good view of the north side of the Coleman Pinnacle and Baker from Yellow Aster Butte Sunday. We hit snow around 5,000' but nothing skiable around there yet.
Yeah, we noticed that further that direction and maybe higher up there looked to be a large snowfield. With the detour to the look-out and the time already spent we decide to go with the slope we knew we had. Now that you've confirmed my suspicions of that area I'll definitely head that direction if another chance appears.
I'm trying to figure out what to do next weekend, but with the rising than dropping snow levels forecast I might just go backpacking.

Great trip report. I was thinking of going there last weekend; it's good to get an idea of the conditions. Next time you head up there, try heading west as soon as you get up to the snowfield. In the early summer its all good skiing, but as the summer/fall progresses the safer (less crevassed) and softer snow hangs out longer on the west end, closer to Marmot Ridge.
That's a beautiful area, and perhaps my favorite ski run for overall joy. Glad you fou...
